Latest arrival in the Rolls-Royce Heritage and Future exhibition in the Aerospace campus in Derby. The Power Gearbox plays a central role in the UltraFan demonstrator engine. It is a key technology in making the engine 25% more fuel efficient than the first generation of Rolls-Royce Trent engines. The PGB has a planetary design, with each 'planet' capable of holding the force of a Trent XWB engine at full throttle. The gearbox has reached a world-record 87,000 horsepower or 64 megawatts on test, enough to power a city the size of Bath.

In the Rolls-Royce Heritage and Future Exhibition in the Aerospace campus in Derby is this Rolls-Royce RB211-22B. This was the first production three-spool high-bypass engine. Originally developed for the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, it entered service in 1972 and was the exclusive engine to power the L-1011. Subsequent developments went onto to power aircraft such as the Boeing 747, 757 and 767 and was superseded in the 1990’s by the Rolls-Royce Trent family of engines on such aircraft as displayed the Boeing 777 and Airbus A340.
