🐾🌾 This time of year we see an increase in pets with problems caused by grass seeds. They often get stuck between paws and in ears and can end in surgery to find where the seed has travelled to!

Please check your dogs paws, ears and coat all over after walks through meadows and woodland, washing their feet if possible. 🌾🐾

Max and Hazel are an amazing duo looking for a new home together.

Max is an 11 year old Shih Tzu and Hazel is a 9 year old Shih Tzu/Terrier cross. They are closely bonded and need to be rehomed together.

Max is a typical Shih Tzu and a funny old man. He absolutely loves being with you and having cuddles... when he wants them! He loves to spend his days being pampered like a prince and laying with his favourite people.

Hazel is an incredibly sweet girl and she has a real zest for life. She can be very enthusiastic when meeting people! She loves to play ball and really enjoys getting out and about for walks - she is always at the front of the pack leading the way.

Max and Hazel's forever home wish list is:
- Adult only home
- No other cats/dogs
- Quiet home with lots of love

Max has a heart murmur but the vet has advised that, due to his age, he would not cope with having surgery, so he just needs to be monitored. Hazel does have a few mammary lumps which are being monitored. Older dogs and dogs with health issues can be much harder to rehome, but this sweet pair deserve to spend their golden years together in a loving home.

Apply to adopt by filling in a Perfect Match form here ➡️ rspcaderby.org.uk/find-a-pet/max-hazel

🐍 Adders 🐍

As the weather begins to warm, we have noticed an increase in calls regarding adder bites.

The adder (Vipera berus berus) is the only venomous snake native to the UK, and is also found across northern Europe. It is a protected species in the UK. Adders are most commonly, but not exclusively, found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands and woodland edges. The clinical signs of an adder bite can include rapid and progressive swelling around the bite site, pain, lethargy, vomiting, bruising, bleeding and collapse.

What should you do if your pet has been bitten by an adder?
❌Do not panic.
❌Do not interfere with the bite.
❌Do not apply a tourniquet.
❌Do not attempt to touch or catch the snake.
❌Do not kill the snake – it is a protected species.
❌If practical, carry your dog to your car and go to your veterinary surgeon - do not delay seeking advice even if your pet is well as things can change quickly.

Adders are not aggressive and generally only bite when provoked. They hibernate in the winter and as a result most bites occur in the summer. Pets are frequently bitten on the leg, head or neck. If your pet has been bitten by an adder (even if you did not see the snake or are not sure what happened) – contact your vet immediately. Your vet will examine your pet to determine the location of the bite and extent of the swelling.

Veterinary professionals can call us any time on 02073 055 055 if required for assistance with managing cases of adder bites. We also hold a list of antivenom stockists across the UK. Please note that antivenom is not indicated in all cases.

Although ticks are present all year round, we see them more often when the weather gets warmer. ☀️They can be picked up in various places but most commonly from walks in long grass or woodland where they can climb or drop onto our pets fur.🌾🌿

If you find a tick it needs to be removed as soon as possible. If you’re confident doing this yourself then using a tick tool is the best way to do it, or if not we can do this in an appointment and also show you how for next time. 🐾🐶🐱

🐰💕 We should all be aware by now the plight that rabbits all over the UK are facing. Rescue centres are full of them waiting for home, and then others waiting to fill that rescue space! Whilst at the same time it’s all too easy to buy baby rabbits from pet shops and irresponsible individuals breeding them. It is a very sad situation.

If you are a rabbit owner, or are thinking of adopting pet rabbits, please take responsibility and make sure to get your rabbits neutered.

For more information on neutering, please visit : https://rabbitwelfare.co.uk/neutering-castration-and-spaying/ 🐰💕

Little signs of spring are appearing! 🌷

Although it’s exciting for us knowing nicer weather is on the way, it’s not exciting for our pets as it brings new dangers! Bulbs of spring flowers are toxic to pets, so keep an extra close eye on them if they are a digger 🐶🐱🌷🐾

01/02/2024

A new year and sadly little has changed in the volume of requests we received to take in pets. Please always consider rehoming rescued pets over pets shops and breeders driven by money. Only when pets in rescues are offered a home, does this create a space to allow another to be rescued.

In 2023 we turned away over 2,000 pets, in January of 2014, we have allready had to turn away more rabbits in January alone, than were rehomed in the whole of 2023.

We currently have 16 rabbits in our care, see thier cute little faces here. Four will remain with us due to their age, 12 are seeking life-long homes, some have been with us for over 6 months.

Unlike breeders, our rabbits are all vaccinated and neutered before adoption, we carry out home checks to ensure accommodation is suitable , we never rehome solitary rabbits and always offer advice and support.

The average cost to us to rescue a rabbit is £180

Please contact us drectly if you would like to consider offering a life-long home to rabbits.
