Today is Mother’s Day; a day to thank our mothers for being wonderful.
In honour of celebrating mothers, we thought we would remind ourselves of some of the best mums in children’s literature, many of which feature in books on our Recommended Reading List.
Let’s start off with Mrs Weasley from Harry Potter; this fearless mum also acted as a surrogate mother to Harry, whilst looking out for her own brood. She knits cosy jumpers and is always ready and raring to lend a hand.
Mrs Darling in Peter Pan embodies the idea of the ‘perfect’ mother. She keeps everything in order, including her children’s minds. Wendy then mimics her as she becomes mother to the lost boys.
Kanga from Winnie-the-Pooh is mother to Roo but takes all the Hundred Acre Wood characters under her wing. She is warm and caring and offers counsel and help to all who need it. As the only female character, her maternal nature shines through the books.
Whilst she may not be Matilda’s biological mother, Miss Honey becomes Matilda’s adoptive mother in Roald Dahl’s children’s classic, and finally gives Matilda the love and support she deserves. She is the only adult to realise Matilda’s incredible abilities and encourages her to reach her potential.
What these mothers have in common is their kind-hearts and unwavering support of their children, and for these reasons we definitely think they are worth remembering.
Happy Mother's Day to all the super mums out there.
To the mums, grandmas, aunts, sisters, the dads that are also mums, the mums with no kids, the work mums & the mums who are no longer with us. 💕💕
You are all absolutely SMASHING it!!

A challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we're all responsible for our own thoughts and actions - all day, every day. We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality.
We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women's achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world.
Today is Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, is a special day celebrated in many countries around the world. On this day many people eat pancakes: thin, flat cakes made in a pan. Pancake Day is always on a Tuesday in February or March.
The most famous pancake race takes place in a town called Olney, in the middle of England. People say that Olney has been celebrating pancake races since 1445. As they run, they have to toss the pancake (throw the pancake in the air and catch it in the pan) several times.
Pancakes are very easy to make. Try this recipe:
Ingredients:
🌟One cup of flour/gluten free flour
🌟One cup of milk/ alternative like almond/soya/coconut
🌟One large egg
🌟Some salt
🌟Some butter or oil
🌟Lemon juice
🌟Some sugar
Instructions:
Fill one cup with flour and put into a bowl. Fill another cup with milk and pour into the bowl. Crack the egg into the bowl and whisk the flour, milk and egg until the mixture is smooth. Put a very small amount of butter or oil in a pan, and when it is hot, put some mixture in the pan and move the pan to make a thin pancake. After one minute hold the pan carefully and throw or toss the pancake in the air to turn it over. Now cook the pancake on the other side.
When the pancake is ready, squeeze some lemon juice and put some sugar on it and eat it immediately. If you don’t like lemon juice, eat them with jam, chocolate sauce, fruit or ice cream. Mmm, delicious!

At Kumon, we want children to have the ability and confidence to be able to think for themselves, both now, at university and for the rest of their lives.
Increasingly in today's world, using their existing knowledge to form and try out hypotheses is a required skill that will also set them in good stead across all academic subjects.
From studying with Kumon they will learn to make judgements based on their own logic, and we believe every child, regardless of age or school year, is able to do this with practice.

Providing children with opportunities to utilise their maths skills is something that can be incorporated into the normal family routine, whereby they can show you they can work it out by themselves! And, as an added bonus, if they can do it in their heads, their mental maths ability is getting utilised too!
This is really just how the Kumon Maths Programme works; by gently encouraging the child to tell us, "what comes next?" or "what would be twice that amount?", we're really demonstrating how practical maths is all around us.

We all know parents love taking snaps of their littles ones on their first day back to school and in a new uniform.
Here's a few social media safety tips to acknowledge, that help keep your photos safe.
Welcome back to school to all our students, staff and parents. We are praying for a safe and successful school year ahead!☘️💙
Good luck to everyone receiving their results today! 👨🎓
It has been the toughest year yet during these unprecedented times and you should all be proud! 👏❤️
It's Results Day today.
Wishing everyone the very best of luck, especially to many students and staff who have the joy of picking up "that envelope" in the morning.
Remember that they are just a small step in life and what you do with the results, good or less than hoped for, is entirely up to you.
If you get the grades you want, fantastic. If not, it is not the end of the world as you know it.
Talk to those around you and make a plan. The future can be as bright as you want it to be.

Kumon was started by a father who wanted to help his son. Thank you to all the Kumon Dads & Mums following in Toru Kumon's footsteps! Happy Father's Day!
As a child there is one book thats a childhood classic about dads, which is Roald Dahls, Danny Champion of the World:
Danny has a life any boy would love—his home is a gypsy caravan, he's the youngest master car mechanic around, and his best friend is his dad, who never runs out of wonderful stories to tell. But one night Danny discovers a shocking secret that his father has kept hidden for years. Soon Danny finds himself the mastermind behind the most incredible plot ever attempted against nasty Victor Hazell, a wealthy landowner with a bad attitude. Can they pull it off? If so, Danny will truly be the champion of the world.
What's your favourite book about dads?
Whilst being fun and social, extracurricular activities are also important in helping develop a child's talents, interests, and passions. One particularly enriching activity is learning to play a musical instrument. There has long been a correlation between musical training and academic success.
It's widely agreed by experts that consistent music education helps children to develop a wide spectrum of skills and can improve a child's memory, as well as other skills ranging from literacy to mathematics. What do you think?

One of the recognisable traits of a Kumon maths student is their ability to do calculations in their heads.
We're often asked why we require the deep practice of basic mental addition without allowing our students to count on their fingers? If they get the right answer using their fingers, why do they need to keep practising 3+2, 8+2, 6+2, mentally? Our article, explains why.
