Meet the monks
#1 Tsoksok-pa Lobzang Thokmed

The Tibetan Monks of Tashi Lhunpo Monastery return to Europe this autumn for concerts in Ireland and the UK on their ‘From the Roof of the World’ tour.

Tsoksok-pa Lobzang Thokmed is one of the most senior monks in the monastery and is a talented thangka painter and sand mandala specialist. He has toured to Europe and to the United States in support of the monastery as a Cham dancer. He has worked in various departments in the monastery including taking charge of the Main Temple and the Dispensary and has been a member of the monastery’s Administration. Since 2020 he has been teaching the art of mandala-making in Tashi Lhunpo’s Ta***ic College.

Founded in Tibet by the First Dalai Lama in 1447, Tashi Lhunpo Monastery was renowned for its scholarship of Mahayana philosophy and the Ta***ic tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Following the Chinese invasion of Tibet, twenty monks from Tashi Lhunpo fled religious persecution and undertook a perilous trek across the Himalayas to India, where the Monastery was re-established in exile in the early 1970s. Fifty years on, Tashi Lhunpo Monastery India is now home to over 400 monks and is once again becoming one of the most important centres of Buddhist learning.
