Hi all, reminder that our next beach clean is this Sunday, 21st April, 10.30am - 12.30pm
See you there :)

After a contentious start to our event this morning, the following information is provided for awareness:

All events held at any of the seafront locations are arranged with and agreed by BCP Council. This involves at least the Events Team and the Seafronts Team.

I carry paperwork with me at every event to evidence our permission to be at that location at that date and time as well as our relevant risk assessment and insurance documentation.

All of our paperwork is published publicly on the website for anyone to view. The dates that we will be at a location are published up to a year in advance.

I have keys for the barriers that allow me to access the locations, these are provided by BCP Council. It is not possible to access the locations without these.

*****

The team are friendly and approachable and we are always happy to speak to anyone, answer questions and provide paperwork if anyone would like to see it.

What we do not appreciate is the manner in which some people approach us, which - this morning particularly - has almost without exception been rude, aggressive and entirely unnecessary.

We fully appreciate that the service road is used as a path and that people walking there do not necessarily expect to see vehicles.

We are aware that there are walkers, runners, cyclists, children and both leashed and unleashed dogs there.

My drivers are extremely vigilant and drive at an appropriate speed, stopping immediately when required in order to protect other beach users and particularly to allow people to safely move children or pets out of the way.

*****

Unfortunately our presence, however considerate, does not seem to be appreciated by some members of the community. We were challenged at least four separate times en-route to our meeting point today.

On the journey back at the end, we had a similar experience and both of my drivers had at least one person taking down their car registration numbers - for what purpose, I don't know - and yet when the driver politely asked if he could help, they ignored him and walked away without replying.

*****

There is absolutely no need for anyone to behave like this towards my team. Rather than telling us we shouldn't be there, can't drive there, tutting, shaking heads, shouting at us, perhaps say good morning and politely ask what we are doing; because we will gladly tell you and provide you with anything that you require to resolve your curiosity and concerns to your satisfaction.

We aim to maintain professionalism and courtesy at all times, but we are human just like you, please treat us as you would like someone to treat you.

*****
We would also appreciate it if dog walkers could please ensure that unleashed dogs are under control at all times and do not jump at volunteers or use the kit bags as a toilet.

*****

I'm a volunteer, I run three of the groups in Christchurch. It takes considerable time and coordination to set everything up each year and I always work with the relevant authorities to achieve that. I am proud to be able to provide the opportunity and service to the community and I hope to continue doing so. Without easy access to the beaches that becomes much harder. Please help me to continue to help keep our beaches clean and beautiful for everyone to enjoy. Thank you.

With thanks to my fantastic team for their ongoing support.

Amelia.
