Eddie Small, a Public Engagement Officer in the University’s School of Humanities, died in September 2020.
As well as being one of the most popular faces on campus, he was also known throughout the city for his work as a playwright, creative writing tutor and historian.
In tribute to his contribution to Dundee and university life, a tree is to be planted in Eddie’s honour at the University of Dundee Botanic Garden on Thursday 26 May.
We’re delighted to share that the Localising Philosophy project co-led by Dr Dominic Smith and Dr Anna Robb has secured two research grants for work to be carried out in primary and secondary schools in the Dundee area. The brief the schools set us was to do meaningful philosophical work with these pupils on the theme of 'Transitions'.
24 - 31 May, a team of student colleagues will visit four local primary schools to do a series of Philosophy workshops with Primary 7 classes thanks to funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Institute at the University of Dundee.
10 June, we bring these pupils together, as part of a preparation day at their new secondary school.
3-7 October, follow-up reflective workshops with the pupils, in their new guise as secondary school pupils thanks to funding from Royal Institute of Philosophy.
We look forward to sharing details of the impacts.
Education | Localising Philosophy, Democratising Technology | Scotland Philosophy of technology meets philosophy of education. Dundee. The Tay Bridge Disaster. Walter Benjamin. ‘Localising Philosophy, Democratising Technology’ is an educational project developed by Dr Dominic Smith (Philosophy) and Dr Anna Robb (Education).
Postgraduate students from across the Arts and Humanities came together to share and celebrate their work last week, with the 'Dwelling in Extremis' Symposium and Exhibition.
We had 65 attendees across the day, and speakers dialled in from China, Greece, and other far-flung locations. What was particularly striking was the way the students dwelt with the theme: each speaker eloquently addressed it, and MFA-AH students exhibiting work did an excellent job of engaging the theme through diverse media. Many thanks to all the staff and students who contributed to what was a wonderful event!
