I did not take a photo of my lovely group of women who joined my class last night and " slowed the fu@k down."
We started with gentle movement, followed by forward folds, constructive rest, bridge pose, and Yoga Nidra. All these movements help slow the heart rate and, in turn, lower the stress hormone. Helping the body,mind, and soul rest and rejuvenate. 🪬
Then, we had fun sitting reading our affirmation cards.✨️

Forgot to say! I had my meeting with the local Palliative Care nurse, and all going well, I should be able to share yoga at CHATS, Dunoon.

The plan is:
⭐️A small introduction to yoga
⭐️Mat based practice or chair depending on how you feel
⭐️Breath work
⭐️Affirmation card pull/reading
⭐️Savasana, a time to "coorie doon"
At the end of the class, I want you to feel
🌟Like you have learned a little on how you can use movement and breath to slow/calm down
🌟You feel more at ease in your body and mind
🌟And, that you want to come back the following week.

I did not like my first class. I had only practised yoga from youtube and so I didn't feel in the know.🤦♂️
It was intimidating. I was not in a good head space when I came to Yoga, so my anxiety levels were so high. Hence, the reason I knew I had to try yoga to try and manage my anxiety.🙅
I was worried that my yoga mat was the wrong one.
I was worried that I didn't look like a yogi.
I was worried I wouldn't be able to bend.
I was worried I would fart when I did bend.❗️
I was worried I would burst out laughing because when I'm anxious I either laugh or burst out crying.
I was worried I would need to join in with chanting.🧘♀️
Yip, so many worries. But, I grew to like yoga. Then, I grew to love yoga. Yes, it is challenging because it makes you move inwards. Find stillness, something that can be hard to do. 🧎♀️➡️
So I hope I have settled any worries about joining my class on Monday 4th November 6 - 7 pm. The tennis club, castle street, Dunoon.

This is positive news.
MD Anderson Cancer Center (Houston, Texas), the largest cancer hospital in the US, has pioneered integrating yoga therapy into cancer care for over two decades. Under the leadership of Dr Lorenzo Cohen, Director of the Integrative Medicine Program, MD Anderson collaborates with Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana (S-VYASA), India’s largest yoga research institute, to conduct yoga research trials. The collaboration began with randomised controlled trials in breast cancer patients.
Research from MD Anderson shows that yoga offers significant benefits for women with breast cancer undergoing radiation therapy. Published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, a 2010 study led by Dr Cohen highlighted that while simple stretching combats fatigue, yoga incorporating breathing, meditation, and relaxation techniques can enhance physical and mental well-being. Women in the yoga group reported better daily functioning, improved general health, and more regulated levels of cortisol, a stress hormone linked to cancer outcomes.
Dr Cohen’s group has completed a 2014 phase III randomised controlled trial, funded with a 4.5 million-dollar grant from the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Cancer Institute, and is analysing the data on women with breast cancer undergoing radiation therapy. In terms of clinical trials, a successful phase III trial would mean that the treatment (here, the yoga intervention) has been shown to be not only safe (phase I) and effective for its purpose (phase II), but also better than standard treatments (phase III) with the same purpose in large groups of patients.
Smitha Mallaiah, a senior yoga therapist, joined MD Anderson in 2011 from S-VYASA and significantly expanded both research and clinical services. While the research initially focused on breast cancer, Smitha helped bring yoga therapy to other cancer populations, including brain tumours, lung cancer, head and neck cancer, cervical cancer, and others. Under her leadership, yoga therapy is now offered as a clinical service line at MD Anderson, available to both inpatient and outpatient settings, helping patients manage symptoms and achieve health goals through personalised yoga interventions at various stages of cancer care. MD Anderson also offers group classes in therapeutic yoga asana, yoga nidra, and pranayama.

Why slow down?
Yes, slowing down not just helps the stress hormone reduce in your body, but it also gives you a chance to check in with how you are.
If you are consistently attending to others, then slowing down will give you a chance to refuel and carry on.
So, why not give yourself an hour to try:
20/25 mins of Yoga
5 minutes to breath
5 mins to check in
25 mins savasana
