Join our St Aidanās college Senior Common Room (SCR)
Our SCR is unique among the Durham Colleges as it is made up of postgraduate students, College and Academic staff, College Fellows - including Visiting Fellows - and members of our regional and global communities, something of which we are immensely proud. This is a brief guide to help new members to settle into St Aidanās and Durham life. It will give you an overview of our vibrant community and provide a few suggestions for enjoying this beautiful historical city, whether youāre with us for one term on an Erasmus exchange, a one year Masters degree, PhD, Postdoc or Fellow.
The SCR is for you. It represents you at College and University level, much of this behind the scenes. For postgraduates, the SCR Executive is elected to represent your voices and interests in key meetings. The SCR Exec also offers a range of opportunities to meet others, make friends and network, by running membersā nights, informal gatherings, dinners, events open to the rest of College (and to which you can invite guests from outside college), and maintaining the dedicated SCR space.
The SCR needs you. Get involved, gain experience in organising events ā or use your previous experience to dazzle us all - suggest new events and activities, be creative and build community. It costs just Ā£15 a year to join.

Get Involved: SCR AGM
One of the many reasons to get involved in St Aidanās SCR is that staff, community members and postgraduate students work together, organising activities and working in collaboration with college staff. If you already have experience of this, you can use that to help mentor others and develop the SCR further. The SCR Executive Committee is responsible for running the SCR, providing our unique range of members with social events, engaging academic lectures and above all else, a space (both physical and virtual) where everyone can come together. Small events can be as delightful as larger ones, so we include cafĆ© crawls, board game nights, film nights, book clubs, cultural tours of Newcastleā¦.. And you will be welcome to sign up for College trips in the Spring and Summer to concerts at the Sage, regional theatres, Auckland Castle, the Bowes Museum, York and Edinburgh.
There are some key SCR Executive positions: the details can be found in the document attached. *One of these, the President, is open only to Postgraduate Students*, because the SCR President will represent our postgraduate students on college forums and wider University forums. The other positions are open to any SCR member and give you the chance to deploy a range of experience and skills, such as team leadership, event management, financial oversight, IT work and creative communications. While enjoying yourself and making new friendsā¦.
The Executive team meets at least once a term, in a space provided in college, but those meetings can be on zoom if necessary. The Exec can meet more often if it chooses, or subgroups (eg Social Sub-Committee) may meet separately to plan events.
So come along to our AGM (Annual General Meeting), on Tuesday, 23rd of November, at 7.15 pm in the Lindisfarne Centre, with free pizzaš, weāll be electing people into these executive committee roles. Even if you donāt want to run for any position, it would be lovely to see you there and listen to your ideas about activities in and out of college. We will make it a hybrid event to include anyone who canāt make it to college, but hope many of you can be here in person.
As the outgoing exec has already stepped down, we will temporarily suspend part of the standing orders for the AGM, so that the Principal can chair ex officio, with another staff member acting ex officio as secretary to take minutes for the meeting.
Please sign up if you intend to attend in person or online.
The SCR has 7 open positions. Please get in touch if interested.
