Stephenson students are warmly invited to the Stephenson College International Formal on Friday 18 November 2022. International Studentsâ Day is celebrated on 17 November, a very important occasion for universities across the globe. Though originally a day of commemoration of the more than 1,200 students from the University of Prague whose lives were taken in WWII, it is now marked by a number of universities as a non-political celebration of the multiculturalism of their international students and the contribution they make. Whether you are an international student or not, this promises to be a wonderful evening.
For full details and to sign up, click on the link in our bio. The deadline to sign up is Monday 7 November at 09.00am. We look forward to celebrating with you!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Stephenson College Squash
Squash is a really fun and exciting sport, which you can pick up really quickly without having ever played before. We run two training sessions every week, with a real range of abilities and everyone welcome. Our
training slots are 4-5 Tuesdays and 5-6 Wednesdays, with both sessions held at the Racecourse squash courts. There is absolutely no commitment needed; just come along whenever you are free for some games in a very relaxed environment.
We also play matches against other colleges most weekends, with one womenâs team and two menâs teams, and our womenâs team won the college league last year. Itâs a really good chance to play different people and
get some competitive matches, and again there is no commitment or pressure to be available for games when youâre busy. We have enough fixtures that there are masses of opportunities to play, and people taking up the sport for the first time will be ready to
play very soon after starting.
We also have regular socials, with plans for this term including bar crawls, a team meal and a night in Newcastle. The socials are a really good way to get to know everyone in the society, just generally a great
night and a big part of what we do.
If youâre interested follow our Instagram for regular updates or email us at
[email protected] to be added to our mailing list.

Great to catch up with our .jcr Society Presidents this evening. Thanks for all you do in College! .societies
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Spag Bol Soc .spagbol.soc
We are one of Stephensonâs newest societies founded only in October 2021 and a society unique to Stephenson College! Through a shared passion of cooking Spag Bol, discussing how to cook it and what ingredients we
use and most importantly eating it as a community, Spag Bol Soc was created. One of the aims of our society is to teach others how to cook a cheap and healthy meal, and to share culinary ideas to make our food even more flavoursome, while living on a student
budget. We are passionate about sharing this with everyone and creating a closer community within Stevo. Not only will we eat Spag Bol, but we will organise social events such as post-spag bar crawls and the Spag Ball (the most anticipated event of the societyâs
calendar). Last Year the Spag Ball was a huge hit where we had around 50 people turn up in formal wear, eat a delicious semi-formal Spag Bol meal, followed by a quiz and a live band on to top off the night. Thereâs no Stevo without Spag, Pasta La Vista!!
To get involved, DM us on Instagram!
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Stephenson Boat Club
Stephenson Boat Club (GSCBC) is a relative newcomer to the college rowing scene, but weâve got a strong season ahead. With our indoor and outdoor training sessions for both senior and novice rowers, we are aiming
to have a fully developed squad this year. Our seniors have been training already and are starting to wind up for the winter racing season. Our novices after all passing their swim test are working hard to learn the sport. With sessions in the indoor tank to learn technique and on the rowing machines to improve fitness, the squad will be ready for the summer regatta season. Although we have racing crews the training feel is still welcoming as all crews train together.
The future of the squad will see a busy summer of racing for both the novices and seniors. With our success in the novice 4+ and senior 8+ at Durham Regatta last summer we are hoping to better our performance and
win more races for Stephenson!
Alongside our training sessions we run regular socials for the crews to get to know each other. If you havenât had the chance to join the boat club, follow our social pages
and Facebook

Stephenson College is thrilled to announce its first Community Connections programme trip of the academic year to The Auckland Project on Saturday 22 October 2022. There are 30 spaces on the day trip and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Travel by coach and entrance fees to Auckland Castle are completely covered by College and are at no charge to participating students.
A symbol of authority and wealth, once home to the powerful Prince Bishops of Durham. Auckland Castle is one of the best-preserved bishopsâ palaces in the whole of Europe and is at the centre of The Auckland Project. The Castle recently reopened after undergoing major conservation work, which has transformed its state rooms to their original Georgian Gothic splendour, as designed by the renowned English architect James Wyatt. A visit here can help us understand, perhaps for the first time, the fascinating history of the men who helped shape the country we live in today.
For full details and to sign up, click the link in our bio!
The deadline for registration is 12pm on Friday 21 October 2022.
Please note, the trip is for Stephenson College students only.

Join us on Monday 24 October 2022 for the third talk in the series given by Professor Ray Hudson, Emeritus Professor in Durham Universityâs Department of Geography. Prof Hudson will look at how mining communities were formed and developed and what happened to mining communities when the last of the pits closed. Miners personified the age of industry, and their fate tells us something about the ending of a way of life and, thus, about how the extinction and survival bipolarity plays out at the societal level.
The talk will run from 7pm to 8pm with doors open at 6.30pm in the Saltwell Building, Stephenson College, DH1 3DE. All members of the DU community welcome.
