๐Ÿคฉ Weโ€™re excited to be partnering with Window to the Womb this summer to share important Summer safety tips to help you and your little ones have a safe summer!

๐Ÿ‘‰ This is a gentle reminder that if your child seems out of sorts in this weather or is displaying โ€˜naughtyโ€™ or frustrated behaviour to please ask yourself if they may be a bit dehydrated.

Symptoms of dehydration in children include:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Feeling thirsty
๐Ÿ‘‰ Dark yellow and strong smelling p*e
๐Ÿ‘‰ Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
๐Ÿ‘‰ Feeling tired or irritable
๐Ÿ‘‰ Dry mouth, lips and eyes
๐Ÿ‘‰ Peeing little, and fewer than 4 times a day - or nappies drier than normal.

๐Ÿ”น Your child may not be able to explain or understand how they are feeling and it can come across as unwanted behaviour or frustration.

๐Ÿ”น If your child shows symptoms of dehydration, give regular small sips and allow them to gradually drink more if they can.

๐Ÿ”น You can use a spoon or medicine syringe to make it easier for your child to swallow the fluids.

๐Ÿ”น Your childโ€™s p*e should be a pale or clear colour.

๐Ÿ”น Remember, breastfed babies will want more feeds than usual in warm weather and this includes night feeds too.

๐Ÿ‘ TAG a parent who might find this helpful.

๐Ÿคง According to Allergy UK 10-15% of children in the UK will experience hay fever. โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿคง Symptoms include itchy, watery eyes, a scratchy throat and sneezing. It can sometimes be confused with a virus. The way to tell the difference is by how long the symptoms last.

๐Ÿคง If it is a virus, the symptoms should only last for a week or two. If your child has a constant runny nose and is sneezing every day for part of the year but not in the winter, it may be a sign that they are allergic to something.

๐Ÿคง Symptoms can start as early as March and continue through until late September.

๐Ÿคง Hay fever symptoms vary in severity and symptoms may be worse some years than others, depending on the weather conditions and the pollen count.

To reduce your childโ€™s exposure to pollens:
๐Ÿ‘‰ Keep windows closed at night so pollen does not enter the house.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Buy your child a pair of wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen entering their eyes.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Apply vaseline around the inside of your childโ€™s nose to trap pollen and stop it being inhaled.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Wash your childโ€™s hair, face and hands when they come back indoors and change their clothes.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Do not dry clothes outside as this will pick up pollen.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Avoid letting them play in fields or large areas of grassland.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Use air filters to try to reduce pollen that is floating around the house.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Keep the car windows shut when driving.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Symptoms are usually worse first thing in the morning and early evening, particularly on days that have been warm and sunny.

๐Ÿ˜ฎ Yes, you read that correctly. Itโ€™s pretty shocking isnโ€™t it. According to the Child Accident Prevention Trust one child under 5 years old is admitted to hospital every day after falling from a building.

๐Ÿ”น With the weather finally warming up, windows are going to be opened itโ€™s important to be vigilant.

๐Ÿ”น Pre-school children are particularly at risk from falls and as their heads are proportionately larger than an adults they are most likely to land on their head which could cause them serious harm.

๐Ÿ”น Window safety catches are easy to fix and can prevent a child from falling and being seriously injured.

โค๏ธFebruary is itโ€™s also which is an opportunity to highlight the importance of the use of defibrillators in cardiac arrest.

๐Ÿ”นCardiac arrest occurs when a casualtyโ€™s heart suddenly stops beating and the person stops breathing or stops breathing normally. This is a very serious medical emergency and the person will require immediate CPR.

๐Ÿ”นOut of hospital cardiac arrest survival rates in this country are low. Only 1 in 12 people survive.

๐Ÿ”นUsing a defibrillator when someone has a cardiac arrest can drastically increase their chance of survival. Fewer than 10% of cardiac arrests have a defibrillator deployed.

๐Ÿ”นThe majority of cardiac arrests (around 80% of them) happen at the personโ€™s usual place of residence. Which means you are most likely to need to resuscitate a loved one at home than anyone anywhere else.

๐Ÿค”Letโ€™s think about that for a moment.

๐Ÿ”นUsing a defibrillator is safe and easy. You donโ€™t need any special medical training.

๐Ÿ”นCome along to one of our classes and weโ€™ll show you exactly what to do and when to use it.

๐Ÿ”นLetโ€™s help to work towards changing these statistics so that more people can survive and out of hospital cardiac arrest.

๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™€๏ธ Hands up if youโ€™ve ever smelled your newborn babyโ€™s head?!

Oh my days.. I loved that smell!

Did you know that a babyโ€™s head has a specific smell that actually has a positive effect on the brain's reward system. Research has shown can make people feel happy and harmonious and we can totally see why!

๐Ÿ’ž According to sciencenordic.com, Biologist Johan Lundstrรถm, a researcher who specialises in smell, thought it was so wonderful to smell his daughter's head when she was born that he decided to investigate exactly how a baby's body odour affects people, according to an article published on an online Swedish popular science research magazine called forskning.se.

๐Ÿ’ž Lundstrรถm and his colleagues conducted experiments with 30 women who were asked to smell the inside of hats that had been worn by newborns. At the same time, the researchers studied their brains with a magnetic camera.

๐Ÿ’ž The women were also given other smells. When the researchers compared the different images of the womenโ€™s brains, it appeared that the baby smell had a similar effect on the brain as drugs used to treat mental illness.

๐Ÿ’ž The researchers now hope that a nasal spray with this distinctive baby smell could be developed as new, safe treatment for mental illnesses such as depression.

๐Ÿ˜ฒ How amazing is that?!

โ€ผ๏ธ In every class, I always discuss the importance that every time your child is riding on something with wheels they should have a helmet on their head.

A helmet could help protect your child from a serious head injury or even save their life if they fall or are hit by a car.

๐Ÿ”น Statistics from the RoSPA found that in bicycle accidents where the casualty was wearing a helmet, fatal head injuries were reduced by 71%, serious injuries were reduced by 60% and overall head injuries were reduced by 48%.

๐Ÿ™ Please make sure you protect your child by putting a helmet on them regardless of where they are riding or how short the distance.

When fitting your childโ€™s helmet ensure that:

โœ… The straps arenโ€™t twisted and form a v shape under the childโ€™s ear
โœ… The straps are tightened but allow you to put your fingers between the strap and the childโ€™s chin
โœ… The helmet is tightened from the back to make sure it isnโ€™t loose enough to wobble

๐Ÿ‘ Please SHARE this post with your parent friends to remind them of how important this is.

โ“ Do you have a little one who has started or returned to school? Have you heard of โ€˜after school restraint collapseโ€™? If not then read onโ€ฆโ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿค” You may wonder why your childโ€™s teacher talks about how lovely they are during the school day but once they are with you itโ€™s another story...

๐Ÿคฏ They may have meltdowns with temper tantrums or they may be withdrawn and refuse to engage with you for a while after school. This is actually really common behaviour in children under 12.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Parenting expert Sarah Ockwell-Smith says โ€œThey have spent all day at school holding in frustration, fear, anxiety, anger and other uncomfortable emotions, because they know that it is โ€œnaughtyโ€ to let them out at school. When they get home to you, however, things are entirely different.โ€

๐Ÿ’• Experts say this shows that your children feel safe enough with you and loved enough to let out all of their bottled up emotions. So really itโ€™s a sign of your great parenting!

๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ How can we deal with it?

โœ… Try not to ask lots of questions as soon as they come out of school.

โœ… Give them a snack โ€“ theyโ€™re likely to be tired and hungry so a bit of quiet time and some food is a good idea.

โœ… Once theyโ€™ve had a snack, exercise can really help them to blow off steam if they need to.

โœ… If they are upset or having a meltdown try to keep calm, acknowledge their feelings and let them know you are there for them.

๐Ÿ’• And remember, itโ€™s totally normal and you are not alone.

This week is National Eczema Week, which is an awareness campaign organised by the National Eczema Society to raise awareness of eczema and the impact it can have on peopleโ€™s lives.

Atopic Eczema is a common childhood condition affecting around 20% of children in the UK. It usually starts within the first 6 months of life and there is usually a history of it in the family. The atopic gene is genetic and causes three conditions: eczema, asthma and hay fever.

Some children will grow out of childhood eczema but others wonโ€™t and unfortunately itโ€™s impossible to predict.

Emollients help by restoring dry, itchy skin and providing a barrier to prevent external triggers getting in. Itโ€™s important to keep moisturising eczematous skin as often as possible to reduce the itching and help prevent-flare ups.

If your baby is developing eczema itโ€™s best to see a GP as quickly as possible to get a skin management routine in place.

For more information on Eczema in little ones and how to manage it visit the National Eczema Society website.

Did you have eczema as a child? Did you grow out of it?

โ“Do you have artificial grass in your garden? โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โš ๏ธ Itโ€™s really practical for little ones but did you know that in warm weather the temperature of the grass is significantly hotter than natural grass and can cause serious burns to little feet in hot weather.

๐Ÿ”ฅ The temperatures in this post are taken from an experiment carried out by a veterinary surgery to demonstrate the dangers to animals and it gives an idea of what temperatures you might be looking at on a hot day.

โ€ผ๏ธ And itโ€™s not just artificial grass. Swipe to see an image of the damage tiles can do too. Thankfully this little one recovered fully but it shows how important it is to be aware of the dangers of surfaces that are in direct sunlight.

๐Ÿ™ Always check the temperature before letting little ones run around outside.

๐Ÿ‘ Please TAG a parent who should know this.

14/06/2023

โ˜€๏ธ Throwing a cover over the buggy when out and about with your baby might seem like an obvious way to keep them cool and protected from the sun on a hot summer day.โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โš ๏ธ BUT did you know that covering your babyโ€™s pram with a blanket on a hot day can significantly increase the temperature inside the pram, possibly to levels that could cause your baby to overheat.

๐Ÿฅต Babies and young children are more vulnerable to the heat than older children and adults. Thatโ€™s because they sweat less, their ability to regulate body temperature is less efficient and they canโ€™t tell you when theyโ€™re feeling too hot. This puts them at increased risk of heat-related illness, dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

โ˜€๏ธ So, if youโ€™re taking your baby out in a pushchair on a hot, sunny day:

โœ… make sure your pram is covered โ€“ preferably with an in-built sunshade (if your pram has one) or a light, well-ventilated, attachable one. These will keep baby shaded while ensuring adequate airflow.

โœ… Dress baby in lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.

โœ… Give your baby more fluids than usual, to keep hydrated - this might mean extra breast or bottle feeds.

โœ… Avoid peak hours and stick to the shade as much as possible.

โœ… Check on little ones often, feeling their skin to ensure theyโ€™re cool.

It is better for them to be covered by something light than to be in direct sunlight while it is hot but only for a very short period of time while you seek shade.

๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ TAG a new mum or dad who might find this useful.

๐Ÿ”น This week is Child Safety Week, which is an annual campaign run by to help raise awareness of child safety and the most common accidents that happen to young children and how they can easily be prevented.โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ‘ The theme this year is โ€˜Safety Made Simpleโ€™.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Scroll through the statements above. Which do you think are true?

โ€ผ๏ธ They all are โ€ผ๏ธ

๐Ÿ‘‡ Here are 5 simple ways to protect your children:

โœ… Run the cold tap first when youโ€™re running a bath for your baby and always check the water before you put baby in.
โœ… Keep cups of tea (and coffee) well out of reach of children until they have been drunk.
โœ… Hook blind cords out of reach. Do it every single time, not just sometimes.
โœ… Know where the button batteries are in your home (stay tuned for a post on this) โ€“ check battery compartments and keep spares well out of reach of children.
โœ… If youโ€™re using hair straighteners or other heat styling products put them in a protective case well out of reach when youโ€™re finished with them.

โš ๏ธ Remember that children are most likely to have an accident at home and making simple changes can help to keep them safe.

๐Ÿ’‰ This week is World Immunisation Week, which aims to highlight and promote the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against disease.โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ’‰ There is no evidence of any link between vaccines and autism. This has been demonstrated in many studies, conducted across very large populations.

๐Ÿ’‰ The 1998 study which raised concerns about a possible link between the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and autism, was later found to be seriously flawed and fraudulent. The paper was subsequently retracted by the journal that published it, and the doctor that published it lost his medical license. Unfortunately, its publication created fear that led to dropping immunisation rates in some countries, and subsequent outbreaks of these diseases.

๐Ÿ‘ถ Your baby will have immunisations at 8, 12 and 16 weeks and again at 1 year to protect them against a range of serious infectious diseases.

๐Ÿ‘‰ If you are unsure about whether or not to get your child vaccinated and want to do more research be wary of websites making false claims and make sure you only use credible sources.

๐Ÿ”น To help you find them, the WHO has reviewed and โ€˜certifiedโ€™ many websites across the world that only provide information based on reliable scientific evidence and independent reviews by leading technical experts. These websites are all members of the Vaccine Safety Net.

We absolutely love this idea from the brilliant and our Daisy trainers all over the UK are showing their support with ribbons on their bags ๐ŸŽ€

The idea is that you tie a ribbon to your changing bag or handbag to show that youโ€™re happy to give help or support to a fellow mum. It also shows that youโ€™re open to receiving help during those tricky moments we all experience sometimes.

Itโ€™s such a simple but lovely idea.

Share this with all the mums you know to get them involved ๐Ÿ’
