Opportunity for Durham University students - looking for student ambassadors.
The Centre for Foreign Language Study at Durham University is hosting a large international, multilingual conference 11-14 September 2024 in the Teaching & Learning Centre. This is the bi-annual conference of CercleS – the confederation of language centres in higher education in Europe. We anticipate 300 delegates coming to Durham from 25 countries. We are seeking to appoint 10 student ambassadors who are willing to help us with the organisation of the conference, as follows:
• Supporting delegate registration via a welcome desk at the conference
• Signposting delegates to sessions and events during the conference, and generally giving advice and information to delegates
• Supporting the coordination of conference sessions (e.g. during audience Q&A etc.)
• Generally acting as ambassadors for the University during the conference
Ambassadors would be required in Durham from the morning of Wednesday 11th September until the afternoon on Saturday 14th September between 09:00-17:00 daily (14:00 on 14th). Lunch will be provided each day.
In addition, we require some wider support from a smaller group of 4 ambassadors (included in the 10 above) over a 6 week period from the start of August to help with processing delegate queries via the conference email address, and to help finalise logistics and conference preparations. This latter function can be done remotely, and is anticipated to be equivalent to 5-10 hours per week, increasing as we get closer to the start of the conference. You will receive training, and will report to and be supervised and mentored by the CFLS adminstration team.
We welcome applications from students across Durham University, undergraduate or postgraduate, with an interest in language learning and inter-cultural understanding. Since the conference itself is international and multilingual, we require student ambassadors to be proficient in at least 2 languages, being English and at least one of the other languages of the conference and of CercleS: Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Slovak and Spanish. Since we anticipate high numbers of delegates from the Czech Republic and Finland we especially welcome applications from speakers of those languages. The roles will be paid.
Informal queries can be sent to [email protected]. We hope to confirm appointments by early July 2024.
