All day today, for twenty four whole hours our In-Patient Unit costs have been donated in loving memory of Sandra Mary Collins with a ‘Pay for a Day’ donation. Below we share the loving words of Sandra's family...

"Sandra was a beloved Wife, Sister, Mother and Nannie. She spent her last four weeks in the wonderful care of St Cuthbert's Hospice. As a family I don't think we can ever thank St Cuthbert's for the amazing care, kindness, compassion and support they showed to her. This was extended to the whole family as they supported us through what was been one of the most difficult times in our lives.

Sandra spent her last birthday at St Cuthbert's but we were still able to spend precious time together and create special memories. The wonderful staff even arranged a birthday afternoon tea for us to celebrate with her.

In memory of Sandra the family kindly asked for donations in lieu of flowers to ‘pay for a day of In-Patient Unit care' and be able to give back to the Hospice and support other families on a similar journey to ours.

Today marks 3 months since Sandra passed away."

We are extremely grateful so this special donation in Sandra's memory. 💚

After a brilliant year in the role, Councillor Lesley Mavin has now completed her term as Mayor of Durham. St Cuthbert’s Hospice was delighted to be informed last year that Councillor Mavin has chosen us as her charity and we are extremely pleased to announce that during her term a fantastic £9,923.13 has been raised.

Councillor Mavin, a Belmont local, along with the support of her friends, family and associates has been extremely busy over the past year balancing both her hefty mayoral diary with a host of fundraising activities including a weekly quiz, raffle and Christmas coffee morning. Councillor Mavin has also been busy placing collection boxes out and about in her local community.

St Cuthbert’s Hospice can’t thank Councillor Lesley Mavin and all those who have helped with her fundraising enough and we wish Councillor Liz Brown, the new Mayor of Durham the best of luck throughout the following year.

“Alison Atyeo died on 28th May 2020 after a short illness. During the latter stages of her life she received tremendous support and care from the staff at St Cuthbert’s Hospice."

“I came to this wonderful place of peace and tranquility, St Cuthbert’s Hospice. Everyone is so kind and helpful and trying to do their best for me”. – Extract from Alison’s diary in April 2020.

"As a way of saying thank you we decided to organise, in Chester le Street an annual charity concert at the Salvation Army Citadel and a Christmas collection at Tesco. As a result of people’s generosity, we are so pleased to fund this wonderful Hospice for a day in memory of Alison whose birthday would have been today.”

– David Atyeo and Kath and Alan Taylor

“It’s the people and volunteers who make St Cuthbert's Hospice Meadowfield Furniture and Homeware Store. Every day is different, and we get so many amazing donations from our local community. We have lots of regular customers, and some are just finding us for the first time. We’ve sold some memorable items in the last year alone, including a giant table tennis table, a beehive and electric bikes. Over the last few years, we have also sold items to the production company filming Vera in the region, where a room in the show was furnished with items from our store. The store is stocked entirely by donations from people in our local community, their generosity over the last 10 years is incredible.” - Malcolm Rennie, Store Manager.

🎂 It's our Meadowfield Furniture & Homeware Store's 10th birthday on Tuesday, and to celebrate they've got 10% off everything from Monday 9th - Saturday 14th September.

🎂 Join the team on Tuesday 10th for a coffee morning, tombola and cake!

🎂 The store was opened in 2014 at 12A Oakway Court, Meadowfield Industrial Estate, Durham and has been a much-loved location for treasure hunters, bargain lovers and up-cyclers ever since!

Allison Younger, Retail Assistant, told us: “A recent sale which sticks in my mind is a couple who bought a cot for their first child, and we’ve celebrated so many other life moments with our customers, like people buying their first sofa for a new house. We’ve seen some great upcycling projects over the years too, where customers share their before and after photos with us. We’ve had customers furnish whole student rentals in Durham and even Airbnb’s with items from the store!”

Visit the store at 12A Oakway Court, Meadowfield Industrial Estate, DH7 8XD, open 9am - 4pm Monday to Friday, and Saturdays 9am-1pm.

We're looking for volunteers to help at the store and across our other 8 charity shops across County Durham. For more information contact our Volunteer Services Team at www.stcuthbertshospice.com/volunteer, email [email protected] or call 0191 386 1170.

All day today, for twenty-four whole hours, our Living Well Centre costs have been donated in loving memory of John Poulton with a ‘Pay for a Day’ donation. We share below the loving words of John's Granddaughter Amber...

"On the 10th August 2021 we sadly lost my wonderful Granda John Poulton after a long, brave battle with cancer. He spent his final weeks in St Cuthbert’s Hospice.

John was a regular visitor of the In-Patient Unit for several years until the day he sadly passed. When he was fit and well enough to be back home, he enjoyed his weekly visits to the Hospice's Living Well Centre, joining in with craft days and gardening.

He always spoke very highly of all the staff and volunteers at the Hospice and commended all their hard work, which is evident in everything they do.

The care he received over the years from the whole team at St Cuthbert’s Hospice was incredible, and the family would never be able to thank them enough for everything they did for him.

Every year since John's passing, we have held the John Poulton Memorial Trophy and fundraising day with all proceeds being donated to the Hospice in his memory. I would like to thank everyone who donated, helped organise or simply attended our charity events.

My Granda will forever leave a massive hole in mine and all of the family’s hearts, he was truly one of a kind."

We are extremely grateful for this special donation in John's memory. 💚

We've been to take a look at Barry's leaf on our In Memory Tree today, as it's two years since he sadly passed away. 💚

Barry volunteered at the Hospice for several years, and more recently he was a guest in our Living Well Centre, where he always enjoyed the pamper sessions! He had a mischievous laugh that was well-known around the Hospice. When Barry passed away in August 2022, we were informed that he had left us a very kind gift in his Will. It's because of people like Barry that we can continue to care for families that are affected by life-limiting illnesses.

When making your Will loved ones will always come first, however if you choose to leave a gift to us like Barry, we would be very grateful. It can be your present to the future, the gift of comfort and care to future generations. Visit our Gifts in Wills webpage for more information: bit.ly/stcuthgiftinwill
