Match Report

Retford (U10’s) Red

Managers Adrian Smith Ross Landells

17th December

Retford Fc U10s (Red) Home to Bentley

Today was the final game of our first season together, after the original game against Bentley was called off due to a water logged pitch this was the rearranged fixture after a 3 week break. We started the game well and it was a fairly even matched game to begin with with neither side carving our any chances.

The first chance fell to us and the opposition keeper pulled off a good save then shortly after Bentley went 1 up.

We then made changes at half time to try and get back into the game but unfortunately it didn’t pay off as shortly after Bentley went 2 up after a mix up. After this we chased the game and tried to push for a goal back and we nearly did through Rocco but their goalkeeper pulled off a top class save.

Bentley finished the game strong with the wind in their favour and scored on the break on occasions.

As much as today was a poor result, Bentley have been the only team that’s beaten us this season and for a new side we’ve got to look at the positives we’ve achieved over the season.

We have a lot of things to work on in training in the new year and with the input of the players the only way is up. Thanks from Ady and myself for a good first season to the players and parents.

16th December 09.30KO
Sponsored by Durhams Heating Service.

Today we travelled to Rossington, Early morning Kick off.

Retford started the game well pushing Rossington back, Retford’s midfield was dominating the game in the early stages, Mia played a ball forward which found Kate, she had some work to do beating a player to smash it past the keeper. Retford kept dominating the game Retford’s midfield was dominating, Mia was different class making strong runs, and powering her way through the Rossington defence to fire home. Retford came under some pressure conceding a corner kick which Rossington managed to score from an own goal. Reford pressed again good work on the right-hand side from Kate to find Olivia who found the back of the net.

Second half Retford Struggled, Retford found it hard to keep the ball Rossington upt their game, and Retford kept working hard. Rossington scored from outside the box which left Lola with no chance in goal. Rossington kept playing well pinning Retford back and we struggled at times. Rossington again found the net. Last ten minutes Retford tried hard to find the winner, giving Rossington problems, but we just ran out of time.

Today the girls tried their best, brilliant first-half display, second-half different team. Unlucky today girls, keep working hard.

Today we traveled to Scorpions on a milder winter morning. The sun was bright, and the pitch suffering from recent weather.

Today we started slowly, still in bed would be the best way to label it. Scorpions brought a steely determination to stop us and loaded up at the back. Our job got even harder when we went one nil down early after not trying to stop a shot on the edge of our area. That turned out to be the last dangerous chance we had to stop. That gave Scorpions something to fight for.

At half time we got the girls geed up, we piled the pressure on, suddenly we’re winning the ball back from pressing them into mistakes, I love how the girls can spark into life when they are up against it! Today it was Isla who took the game to them and it was nothing short of what she deserved when she scored from outside the area . The girls wasn’t done there and they kept knocking and knocking on the door. Talia came alive in the last quarter and only a bobble and a bit of hard luck stopped us scoring. Isla wasn’t done there, when Bessie pressed the defender into our trap giving the ball to Isla in the middle she drove forwards, struck a strong shot into the corner! After her unrelenting desire Isla and the team got their reward and saw out the match for the win.

Rosie H, Eleanor and Rosie B wasn’t stretched much today but they looked composed in possession playing out from the back, Blaire as always starting attacks with great passes with both right and left feet. Bessie and Katelyn worked hard to force errors and drive us forwards. Erin showed good strength to hold a player off and play a nice pass out to Talia who came alive in the last quarter.

Another day another act of criminal damage …… if anyone sees anything or knows anything please get in touch…..

As volunteers trying to create a secure and safe place for children to enjoy football it’s beggars belief as to why someone thinks this is ok to want to damage the fencing to get into an area where children play.

Photos from Retford FC Juniors's post 12/12/2023

Some disappointing news coming in from the Juniors Playing Fields today.
As many of you know we’re a self funded local club helping children play football. We’ve worked hard to get enough funding to keep the children from our local communities safe while they play, by working with Notts County Council to have the footpath diverted and we’ve worked hard to raise the funds to fence off the playing fields from the footpath.

What saddens us that some one has recently and deliberately attempted to cut it down which will now cost more money to have it replaced. This is people who should know better who have done this kind of mindless act.
This will be reported to the police in the morning.

Home vs Club Thorne
Today Retford Fc played a unbeaten Thorne side in a very physical and competitive affair! The game began and Retford were off to a flying start with their main striker going through and being taken out. A penalty was awarded and converted. Soon after, Retford went on to concede two from unlucky goals.
The lead didn’t last long though as Retfords striker bagged for the boys in blue and went into halftime level.
Minutes after halftime, Thornes man put them ahead but Retford were not worried. They went on to score from a corner and excitement shot around the crowd.
The atmosphere was tense and drama occurred, as Retfords number 9 buried a rebound off the keeper to send Retford to victory!

Today we welcomed the undefeated league leaders Rossington on a wet but perfect footy morning down at the juniors!

We started in the perfect manner, a good fun warm up, an inspirational team talk from Captain Elliott and an all round great attitude from everyone! We had lost Ruben due to railway issues and William due to illness, leaving us with a solid and confident 9!

As the game started it was clear our team felt at ease, pressure was off and they was in a great mindset to play football. From the start we was upto the physical test Rosso present and we fought our battles and challenged well. We then got the ball down and played quickly and perfectly around and through Rosso to hit them on the break.

We had to prevent good spells of Rosso pressure, we stayed in the game and with 10 mins to go we played out and we caught Rosso on the break with a great through ball from Tommy to Sean who went through and put the ball past the keeper. Our confidence went sky high and we started to create more openings, then as the game was closing Sean broke though again and was taken down inside the area. Sean stepped up and rattled the ball home! The boys celebrated together and the ref blew the final whistle!

I’m so proud of their team spirit, the attitude to how we play and every single one of them trying their best to play good football which we’ve worked on! We’re growing every week and I’ve never enjoyed coaching so much!

Oliver is in the form of his life, coming on so much every week. He kept us in the game when Rosso was on top. His hands was good and brave but his kicking is exceptional.Cory played his best full game of the season on the back of strong training performance, along with Dylan winning loads of duals, tackles, blocks and now looking to play out with confidence which is our aim at the back! Dobo nailed our line, he kept us up the pitch consistently and Quicker than we had all season, and as always was confident on the ball playing us through into the middle third! All 3 defenders held concentration and scanned consistently for the whole match! Elliott and Talia put in a great shift, holding the ball up, linking play and combined for several wall passes! It was Talias first full match at 9 aside and she seemed to grow stronger as it went on.

Introducing our Midfielders! Tommy who plays a blend of number 10 and 8 alternating with Sean and today nailed it. All season Tommy has helped create chances for his team mates, but what I love his Tommys attitude, he maybe little but he’s tough as nails, tackle and pressing constantly and always looks for a pass if it’s on. Comfortable in possession in any situation. Our keeper Jenson today was outstanding has our number 6 defensive midfielder, for a keeper to be asked to do this role in such a big game I couldn’t have been more impressed. I asked Jenson to protect the defence, sit in front, back up play, win tackles, and play forwards. Not only did he smash that he won headers he carried the ball past players and was disciplined in positioning! Sean what words can I say that would do this lad justice! Sean has such incredible talent, but what Sean has learned and is still working on is decision making, we’ve seen that Sean can still get us out of trouble and naturally carry the ball forwards, win battles and score great goals but now he’s finding more passes and wall passes and recently he’s set up some fantastic goals too. When Sean is smiling everyone better watch out because he’s absolutely unplayable 👏🏻👏🏻

Today we welcomed Adwick on a very wet morning. One where the parents was hoping they would get the message it was off! Dean had other ideas! Let’s make memories, have fun and build character!

Today we started strongly in possession and Adwick was up for the challenge in the early stages. We had to keep passing side to side to find some space for our attackers to create chances. As the game progressed we carried on our unrelenting football and the attacks showered down on the Adwick defence.

Today I loved how we are showing such confidence in possession, how we look for passes, and spaces. The detail in some of our movements and our precision passing was inch perfect, shown by Isla several times with corners played into the path of a forward running defender for a first time shot or cross. Isla unselfishly controlled the match today from start to finish helping team mates score. I was so pleased for Erin who played several good passes when under pressure, and for one of her goals that she scored today, on the edge of the area, controlled, looked up and placed it perfectly in the corner. The fans went wild! The whole team helped each other score goals today on top of great individual skill.

Rosie H kept a clean sheet on a quiet day in goal, but remained positive and got herself on the scoresheet and an assist in the last quarter out on the wing, while our Bessie took over net duty. Blaire filled in for our missing defenders today and between her and Eleanor they stopped any chances building and played some wonderful passes out from the back with both feet. Stepped out when it was right and I love how they play so comfortably from the back.

In possession we was good, switching play, driving forwards when it was open, playing good passes and then some excellent calm clinical finishes.
We have a clear identity and we play that way no matter who we play!
In training we’re still working on in possession and how our movements in midfield and attack create more spaces and move players around so we can connect our playing out of defence.

Introducing our attackers Talia who has always was running riot today with a hint of stealth like composure, they know what’s coming but they can’t stop it. The improvement of Talias calmness in front of goal and her shooting technique has come on so much to finish off her incredible dribbling skills. Katelyn has become a big part of our team since joining this season with a growing confidence to take players on with her speed and drive us forwards. Katelyn has scored some fantastic goals recently and always shows good strength in a battle. Bessie has grown through the benefit of playing in goal, midfield and in attack, shown recently with some great dribbling when driving down the wing, in training I’ve noticed some brilliant finishing and strength to hold defenders off. Bessie has a great throw that causes defenders lots of problems and she unselfishly goes in goal to give Rosie a run out. Bessie also plays up a year and when she’s helped the U9s out she has really stood out! Our attackers are working on their shape out of possession and positioning especially when we are defending or being ready for the switch.

11.30 KO

Today we played Mexborough Knights at the juniors, on a wet wintery morning.

Retford started the game on the front foot pushing Mexborough back, Retford kept pushing and Erin found some space on the right-hand side, ran into the box, and scored. Retford carried on pushing the Mexborough defence causing all sorts of problems, the ball found Olivia in the box and scored. Lilly-May was playing well in the middle breaking play up, passing the ball forward well. Reford was awarded a penalty for handball, Mia stepped up to take it and found the net with a well-taken penalty. Lilly-May found some room in the box to shoot and scored with a nice finish, not long after Lilly-May scored again.

In the second half, Retford took a little pressure from Mexborough and stood firm with Erin and Lizzy W working well together in defence, and Louisa working hard in midfield. Retford got going pressing high up the pitch the ball found its way through to Kate who ran at the defence and got past her player to score, Retford was awarded another penalty for handball, and India stepped up to take it, and scored. Retford kept going wanting more from the game, the ball kept bouncing around the box Harper found space from a tight angle to score. Mexborough was awarded a penalty shortly after, for a foul. Lola kept calm and made a great save. Mexborough had a rare attack on goal and found the net after the ball was bounced around the box. Retford went again on the attack the ball found its way on the righthand side, and Kate flicked the ball over the defence to find India unmarked who scored with a neat finish. Just before the end of the game, Mia found space just outside of the box to score in the top corner.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗢 𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘𝗟 𝗔 𝗚𝗔𝗠𝗘

We saw this on another post and thought it was quite apparent at the minute.........

It’s easy to criticise the decision to cancel a game, but before you do just take a second to think what has gone into making that decision first.

1) Is it safe for everyone and is the forecast safe?
2) Is it currently playable and what is the forecast?
3) Is there a weather warning in place now or whilst the games are on?
4) Will the pitch drain water or thaw frost in time?
5) What’s the temperature forecast now, overnight and during the game?
6) What time is KO and how far are the opposition travelling from?
7) If it’s a central venue, thousands of people will be affected, is an earlier decision better?

Sometimes the decision to cancel is made at the last minute if a belief that the game can be playable will be made, other times an early decision will be made. All decisions are made with the available information at the time and the available upto date weather forecasts. Often the decision is right, sometimes the decision can “in hindsight” be wrong due to many factors such as drainage, temperature, wind etc but always the decision is made in good faith.

Many times we’ve personally made this decision and know it’s not an exact science at times, so a little shoutout of support from teamgrassroots to those with the decision on their shoulders and who will quite often be up late and up early doing last minute checks and obsessively checking weather forecasts.

We appreciate it 🙌🏻🙌🏽🙌🏿

Today we welcomed Epworth, another strong attacking team from the Prem division. The frost had gone with the rise of the winter sun.

We started in the perfect manner, a good fun warm up, an inspirational team talk from Captain Elliott and an all round great attitude from everyone! We also welcomed our new attacking signing Talia who made a strong debut!

As the game started it was clear our team felt at ease, pressure was off and they was in a great mindset to play football. From the start we took our training into the match and calved open Epworth several times playing some fantastic football!

Several of Our goals came from similar patterns in possession, good goal kicks played out from Oliver, into defence, then into midfield and either a good bursting run with the ball or a ball inside the defenders for a runner which opens Epworth up time and time again, with the final move a dangerous square pass to the back post for the finish!

In possession we was really good in the first half creating lots of chances, and if not for their keeper we would have scored a few more, in second half we didn’t do this as much. There was Some brilliant link up play in triangles by several players led to a good goal from Sean and a great move down the left hand side finished off by Elliott linking up brilliantly. Good movement and passes by Tommy and William linked well with the wide players Talia and Ruben to create more chances. Tommy also nearly scored a volley but saved. As the game went on we had to dig deep as we got a bit over run and they found space. They did get one back but our Oliver made sure we won the match with several outstanding saves!

Introducing our defenders! Our Dobo who plays sweeper, very good on the ball, starts many of our moves, great passer and set piece taker. Cory who is strong in the tackle and fast, Dylan who loves a tackle, plays left side because he can use both feet. The defence have been improving on in possession, playing out from the back, a good shape to create space and comfortable to receive the ball. Things we are working on to tighten up are Communication, scanning and moving the line up as we play. 👏🏻👏🏻

Vs Bessacarr U13

Bessacarr were the visitors this week. Having beaten them 4-1 in the first game of the season, Retford knew Bessie's were finding their stride and this wasn't going to be a walkover.
Both teams started cagily but Bessacarr were the brightest.
After a great run down the right wing and a fine cross, Bessie's found themselves 1-0 up poking home at the back post. The second half was end to end and we saw some real good battles in midfield but Bessacarr doubled their lead after a wobble in the Retford defence.

Retford, down but not out kept battling and with a free kick around 30 yards out, Nathan stepped up and beat the keeper with a fine strike. 1-2
Retford kept pushing but couldn't break Bessies down until late in the match, Harrison's free kick from just inside the Retford half found Harry S who flicked it on to Theaks. Theaks crossed low and new kid in Town Freddie poked home at the back post. Huge sigh of relief from players, coaches and parents but a fair result
2-2

Man of the Match. Nathan. Carried on where he left off last week.

Retford FC Juniors U8’s.
Manager Tom Linacre: Match Report 26/11
Home Vs Bessacar
A good first quarter with Retford controlling the game for the most part. Tireless work from Max in midfield and Nico did some good pressing that rewarded him with a one on one with their keeper, which was calmly rolled into the bottom corner. We eased off a little though and they came back with a equaliser.
Second quarter we lost ourselves a little, a lack of composure and shape leaving holes at the back which they managed to exploit leaving us 1-3 down.
We came back in the third quarter with Jake finishing one of his trademark runs through the middle and Lottie picking up a rebound off the post and firing it into the top corner. We were unlucky to find ourselves still behind though as we conceded from a corner.
The final quarter was Bobbie's moment to shine and he was a constant menace to their defenders. This was rewarded with an equaliser and despite our best efforts we couldn't find a winner.

Players of the Match were Jake and Bobby.
A hard fought game on a bitterly cold morning.

25/11/23
10.30 KO

Yesterday, we played Askern Miners at the juniors, on a cold wintery morning.

1st half Retford started the game brightly pushing Askern back and testing the Askern defence, some great work in midfield from Erin, Kate, and Lilly-May, trying to find Olivia and Louisa up top. Retford’s defence, India, Harriet, and Emily standing firm against the Askern attacks, Harriet kicking the ball long looking to play Olivia in was causing Askern problems. Retford then worked up the pitch passing together, Erin found some room and ran into the box to slot the ball past the keeper. Retford then continued pushing for more but couldn’t find the net again before halftime.

Second half, Retford started strong - working hard passing the ball well at times, like we have been working on in training. Retford worked the ball around the pitch, Great play at the back from Harper always trying her best. Lizzy T trying to run the ball down the right-hand side, working hard. Erin found some space just outside the box and passed the ball in the box for Olivia to hit it past the keeper. Then Askern woke up pined Retford back Lola making some great saves, Askern found the net with Retford’s defence playing too High. Retford continued to find another goal, out of know where Lizzy W received the ball just inside the Askern half ran with the ball dropped her shoulder glided past the Askern defence to run towards the goal, and found the net.

Olivia
Lizzy W

All the Girls played really well today, always looking to pass the ball like we have been working on in training, A few good stand-out performances today Lola in goal one of her best displays, Lizzy w with the goal she scored was outstanding, and Harriet who played her heart out in defence.

Today’s Girl of the Match sponsored by Durhams Heating Service goes to Harriet. Harriet today you played outstanding, one of the best defensive displays anyone would see, you tackled well you were always looking to pass the ball forward, and did it to a high standard. Well done, Harriet same again next week, please.👍🏆

Today we welcomed Brodsworth on a frosty winter’s morning at the juniors.
The girls struggled to get going a little bit today, cold toes not helping the matter. After 10 mins we started to get into the game, started to move the ball and create chances.

Today we saw Great positioning from Rosie H in goal playing as sweeper keeper, playing nice passes out, Eleanor and new signing Maddie kept guard of defence with some calm composure when playing forward passes. Rosie B dipped in and out of midfield backing up the play, always composed. Blaire, Isla and Erin taking in control of Midfield. Bessie, Katelyn, Priya and Talia our forward pairings causing lots of problems for their defence, some good one on ones with defenders creating chances and some very composed finishes.

Introducing our midfielders Blaire our playmaker, works so hard, she has such good football brain, when to pass and with both feet, decision making perfect and so selfless, popped up with another good strike for her goal, Isla our energy, our tempo, she works very hard, drives us forwards with great runs, always gets us out of trouble with her speed and has a rocket of a shot. Erin growing in her technique, showing confidence to turn, to pass and to dribble. Today having a great shot into far corner which the keeper made a good save to stop it. 👏🏻👏🏻
