How the Chesterfield Canal came into being. From the initial visions, right through to an almost collapse of it's existence in the 60's. What we have today is thanks to those men who forged it's future. Read more just click on the link.
"Two Canal Pioneers" https://www.madeinn.co.uk/arts-and-culture/heritage/361-two-canal-pioneers
Two Canal Pioneers The original idea for the canal was put forward by businessmen in and around Chesterfield. They wanted to find a more reliable and efficient way of moving their produce to other markets. Chief amongst these were heavy goods like lead, from the Peak District mines, and coal from Staveley and Killamar...
Today's collection from firing. I am so pleased with these. The serving plate is beautiful. Local wildflowers pressed into clay and then painted in a watercolour way.
Local history and transport... The river Trent being the main routes for many of the rivers feeding onto the Trent. Here's one about transportation and haulage for coal, farming and more.
Delving into history as we approach Retford Heritage Day on the 14th September...
"Gainsborough's Port and River Memories"
Gainsborough's Port and River Memories Ever since the Middle Ages, the River Trent has been an important channel of communication between the towns of the Midlands ensuring sources of raw materials travel to markets in other parts of the British Isles and overseas. The staple items traditionally carried along the Trent were wool, buildin...

I've discovered recently that this plant is actually called 'Cats Ear' a false dandelion.

Catsear common names also include flatweed, cat’s-ear, hairy cat’s ear or false dandelion, Catsear is derived from the words cat’s ear, and refers to the shape and fine hair on the leaves resembling that of the ear of a cat. The branches stems are somewhat different to the singular stem of the dandelion. I found this one growing in a meadow near the pottery studios. Flowering in May/June
Another derivative is 'Hawkbit'.

Look at the difference before and after glazing. Firing brings out the vivid colours. Its an attempt at watercolour techniques placed onto a plate.
Sold two of these yesterday.. they are going to be framed for a granddaughter who is going to London to see Paddington bear.. she has the suitcase, the dress, and now the picture. What a lovely story... The drawing came from my sketchbook when we were in London moored outside Paddington station as we were part of the Chilled Event's event on the Paddington Arm canal.

The long way round...
The long way round... started in 2014 when we began our journey on Hekla our narrowboat from Norbury. Homeward bound or so we thought... as the next 4 months took us to make the longest journey you could imagine. With lock closures and lock collapses; we discovered that we didn’t really need a base. If you can manage for 4 months and realise that with the internet and mobile phones; the world is your oyster. So it began, this enabled us to realise our dream of travelling the canal and river systems of the UK. Our gallery and studio took shape during this period; and so to came to be NB Hekla Pop-Up Art Gallery. The next 4 years have seen many journeys; meeting people from all walks of life. Artworks comprise of Wildlife drawings in the beginning; wildlife we have come to meet, followed by that was retracing our steps by making maps. In collaboration with Lockmaster Maps, we now have a growing collection of the mapped waterways of the system.
This last year saw our Little Book shop with the book The Wrong Way Round telling the story of the first 5 months aboard Hekla and the misadventures of that journey.
This will be our fifth year aboard Hekla; we have a few festivals planned, a few exhibitions along with Pop-Ups along the way. We hope you can join us... time for a chat and a cuppa.. talk about the day, art or putting a face to a name. Cheers... from us, Rob & Lesley
‘Hekla on Tour’ after a wonderful year of exhibiting and Popping-up we are currently on the Leeds Liverpool Canal heading homeward bound for Christmas. Beating the lock closures as we go... thank you for all your likes and messages. Thanks for visiting us along the way and look out for some changes next year as we re-adjust our schedule. Thank you from us both, Rob & Lesley x
