This week is UK Eating Disorder Week, so weโre taking the opportunity to share support for those struggling with eating disorders and their loved ones. Weโll be posting throughout this week, and our first post is about what to look out for if youโre worried that someone you love has an eating disorder.
Remember that everyoneโs journey is different and eating disorders wonโt always look the same, but there are some common signs that you can keep your eyes peeled for if youโre worried about someone you know. We're sharing some helpful resources that might help you identify some of the common signs of eating disorders.
BEAT not only provides training courses to help you learn how to spot the signs, but they also provide downloadable resources that explain what you should be looking for and why. You can access their training courses here: https://www.beateatingdisorders.org.uk/training-events/find-training/
WebMDโs list breaks down each different eating disorder and what to look out for in each one, so youโll find it easier to pinpoint what you or a loved one are going through: https://www.webmd.com/mental-health/eating-disorders/signs-of-eating-disorders
Finally, the national eating disorder also lists their warning signs by specific eating disorder, but they also list the most common symptoms in two groups: emotional and behavioural, and physical. This way, you can start by looking for the most common signs, then begin to narrow it down: https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/warning-signs-and-symptoms/
If you donโt feel you can speak to your loved one about these concerning signs, remember you can access all the support weโre listing in our other ED Week posts.

Why not volunteer with Vintage Vibes?! ๐
Vintage Vibes are an Edinburgh based charity that is working to tackle loneliness in the over 60s (the VIPs) ๐ต๐ผ๐ด๐พ๐ง๐ฝ.
They are looking for student volunteers to create 1:1 friendships with VIPs and volunteers.
Vintage Vibes provide full training and cover volunteer expenses.
What you give? Volunteers will spend an hour or so a week chatting to a VIP (this is a companionship, not a carers role).
What you get? Volunteering is good for you and can give you purpose, make you feel calmer, happier and less stressed. This is a great way to meet others, enjoy fun and free nights out and get a great reference for future employers.

Happy Burns Night to everyone! ๐ฅณ
Robert Burns is a Scottish Poet celebrated on the 25th January each year, known as 'Burns Night'.
Burns night is a time to enjoy Scottish traditions and many Scots enjoy a tasty Burns supper of Haggis (described as the 'great chieftain o' the puddin' race' by Burns himself), Neeps and Tatties to celebrate the occasion. ๐ฝ๏ธ๐
Burns famously wrote of Edinburgh... 'Edina! Scotia's darling seat!
All hail thy palaces and tow'rs,
Where once, beneath a Monarch's feet,
Sat Legislation's sov'reign pow'rs:
From marking wildly scatt'red flow'rs,
As on the banks of Ayr I stray'd,
And singing, lone, the lingering hours,
I shelter in they honour'd shade.'
