I've been having fun taking shots of serving boards this morning. Trying desperately not to eat all the cheese before the shoot is over!

I’ve been developing these lamps over the last few weeks. Those of you that visited last week will have seen them on display.
I find even the simplest of ideas can be hard to get just right. Perhaps more so than designs with multiple elements to them, as there is less to distract the eye. If the proportions aren’t just right then the design can fall flat.
I think I’m getting close with these lamps but I think the bases need to be slightly less heavy to get the right balance between the bulb and the base. I also want to experiment with an off-saw finish to bring a bit more texture to the design. Anyway, I’ll keep fettling until I’m satisfied!

It's next month so it's time for me to make a batch of these serving boards to sell. I'm going to fire up the blow torch this time and make some of them with a burnt black finish.

The Esk bench in Ebonised Oak...
The ebonising process I use to give the Esk bench it's jet black finish is a bit like magic. All that is required is to paint an iron oxide solution onto the surface of the timber and watch it change colour. Oak is particularly high in tannins and these tannins react with the iron oxide to turn it black. I make my iron oxide by steeping steel wool in vinegar for a few days. I much prefer this method over staining as the reaction occurs within the the fibres of the Oak rather than on the surface, making it a more durable finish. Plus it's super fun to do!
