Space for Youth Befriending provides children and young people aged five to 16 with a volunteer befriender once a week for two to three hours, who will support and encourage them to explore new activities and find new interests and hobbies.

Befriending matches are based on shared interests, and the volunteer helps their young befriendee build confidence and self-esteem, improve social skills, and make friends outwith their peer group.

Befriending can make a real difference to a young person's life and help them to access opportunities in Edinburgh that they may not otherwise have had access to.

For more information, visit our website (https://spacescot.org/youth-befriending/) or check out our 2023 Impact Report (https://issuu.com/spacescot.../docs/impact_report_2023_final).

Space runs an enriching and stimulating day-care service for older people with dementia and those facing social isolation or loneliness called the Beacon Club. We believe that people with dementia are entitled to respect and dignity, and we work to improve the quality of life for our members by connecting them with dedicated staff and nurturing volunteers.

Groups are limited to just 10 people, ensuring that the highest level of care can be given while also reducing anxiety about meeting large groups of new people. We provide refreshments on arrival, a choice of hot meals at lunchtime, and a blend of activities and outings to suit all kinds of preferences. Members are asked to make a small contribution to the costs of running the programme.

We run two Beacon Clubs—one based at The Broomhouse Hub, and another at the Tron Kirk in Gilmerton. Both cater to people with mild-to-moderate cognitive impairment, including those who have not yet had an official dementia diagnosis. This is also a great social group for isolated older people who can enjoy one day a week out of the house and spend time with others.

While the Beacon Club provides high levels of care for older people, it comes with the added benefit of carer respite—allowing them to enjoy several hours to relax, unwind, and manage things, knowing the person they care for is in good company.

If you or someone you know might benefit from joining one of our Beacon Clubs, please get in touch. Referrals can come from relatives, friends, or professionals; it does not have to come from your GP.

For more information, visit our website (https://spacescot.org/the-beacon-club/) or check out our 2023 Impact Report (https://issuu.com/spacescot.org/docs/impact_report_2023_final).

Happy holidays to all our participants, volunteers and supporters from The Welcoming staff! 🎄🎅

The members of our Women's Conversation Space have a poetry session once a month, which is led by the amazing Beth from Open Book and together they create wonderful poetry based on their lived experiences. 📙

We thought this poem about Christmas dinner evoked so many childhood memories and thought today would be the best day to showcase the WCS poem! ✒️

This month's featured worksheet aims to help you to teach your clients how the vicious cycle is a way of understanding why we feel as we do.

It can be used by supporters as an initial assessment – to help people see what is going on and how it is affecting them. It is a simple way of helping them understand how what they think affects how they feel emotionally and physically, and what they do, and also how to stop the cycle and spin it the other way. It can help people understand emotional and physical wellbeing changes, as well as the impact of relationships, life events and everyday life hassles. It can be helpful to complete it whenever they feel different - worse or better emotionally or physically, or whenever they spot themselves reacting in ways that either help - or make things worse (e.g. avoid things, but down on activities, or respond unhelpfully). It helps spot repeating patterns of thinking, emotions, bodily responses and activity.

The sheet is also a great way to summarise/feedback about a client or patient in your clinical team meeting or handover.
