We are very saddened to hear about the passing of Mike Grainger. Mike was a big part of Edinburgh amateur theatre including Southern Light and the Gang Show. He was a familiar face backstage at Southern Light for many years chaperoning the children and latterly helping with wardrobe. We really appreciate everything he did for the company and he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

The Music Man has left River City and the crew have all packed up. We would like to thank everyone who made it happen as well as the cast there are all the backstage crew, wardrobe, props, chaperones, front of house, committee, production team, Festival Theatre team and many others. Our Story

The above quotation is the first entry in the original minute book written towards the end of the 19th Century. This is how Edinburgh's oldest amateur operatic society was founded.
Our name ,"The Southern Light Opera Company", was derived from the fact that the majority of the Founder Members lived on the south side of the city of Edinburgh and, of course, wanted to perform light opera.
The first 5 Southern Light Opera shows were presented in the Operetta House, Chambers street, long since demolished. The company's only visit to the Theatre Royal followed in 1901, after which a move was made to the Lyceum where we played until 1924. Since then our "home" has been the King's Theatre - A connection broken on 4 occasions. We also performed 2 productions in Braidburn Open-Air Theatre in June 1946 and June 1947
