Kenris MacLeod is a textile artist who lives and works in Edinburgh, Scotland. Her work uses the medium of freemotion machine embroidery – painting with thread – to describe the textures and complexity of the natural world, specifically trees.
Using the sewing machine needle as a pencil or a paintbrush, she sews complex designs that combine repetitive forms and abstract shapes with elemental natural imagery, connecting us to our ancient roots and tapping into a memory that is almost, but not quite, lost.
We have three of these beautiful works in the gallery at the moment, including ‘Rocheid Path Reflection’.
There’s a stretch of Edinburgh’s Water of Leith which runs between Rocheid Path and the Glenogle colonies where, by a red bridge, an old weeping willow dips its leafy fingers into the river. This piece asks the viewer which way is up? What is real and what is reflected? Which world are you in?

A familiar corner of Edinburgh is captured in this new painting from Louis Sinclair McNally - one of a collection of new works from the artist.
Finding inspiration in the East Coast countryside and the Gothic majesty of Edinburgh, Louis’ works act as interpretations of the environments that we traverse on a day to day basis. He strips away evidence of the hustle and bustle of daily life. This allows him to explore the distinctive character and grandeur of any given place.
Often painting with oil on robust wooden panels, Louis has a painstakingly detailed approach. He creates paintings that are carefully composed and painted over many weeks. He often references his own drawings, photographs and memories. The resulting works can feel both unsettling and reassuring. And at the same time; in shining an atmospheric light on familiar locales, they invite us to fully appreciate the essential tranquillity of the spaces we inhabit.

‘Birches, Loch an Eilein’ is one of four new paintings in the gallery from Nancy TurnbullNancy’s inspiration comes from her observations of nature; the changing seasons, soft greens, lilac clouds, lichen on shore rock and reflections on the shoreline.
She searches out inspiration wherever she is, and she appreciates the way in which familiar scenes change with different light conditions and the rotation of the seasons.

We’re delighted to have a collection of new paintings in the gallery from Garry Harper.
Garry’s work is mainly figurative. Using a variety of techniques and media, he tries to capture some lost moments, people caught in reflection. Seeking inspiration in people and places, past and present, he's fascinated by the mystery some images hold, making us curious as to who they were and what lives they lived.
View these paintings and more from Garry in the gallery now, or via our website at any time.

Another pick from Emily Powell's solo exhibition, painting on Tiree - 'Just before Sunset' captures the light and atmosphere of the tiny Hebridean island at dusk.
What Emily found on Tiree was a sky so big it seemed to hold the world in it, deep turquoise seas, colourful boats bobbing in the harbour, and beaches of bleached white sand shimmering with the iridescence of long crushed shells. Black houses, clustered together like old friends dotted over the island, pink and purple sea thrift fringing the shoreline, bright yellow mosses singing against the black of rock.
The exhibition runs in the gallery until this Saturday - join us if you can, or view a virtual exhibition on our website now.

Some favourite Tiree spots captured in Emily Powell's paintings from her residency on the tiny Hebridean Island: Sorobaidh Bay, Balemartine and Hynish.

Two striking new small paintings from Portobello-based artist Jenny Martin.
Jenny is inspired by people and the things they make, the traces they leave and the things they value. She loves colour and pattern which both feature heavily in her work.

One of a number of vessels in the gallery from ceramicist Barry Stedman - we've enjoyed seeing this sit alongside the Hebridean colours captured in Emily Powell's solo exhibition this month.
Often developing a series of work influenced by natural phenomena, places and emotions, Barry develops ideas from drawings paintings and previous firings. He enjoys the warmth and brightness of earthenware using slip, oxides and underglazes over a red clay body. he creates his surfaces in layers, firing in between using thin washes and wiping them back to create rich zones of colour.
Browse and buy Barry's work via our website at any time, or visit the gallery to view these beautiful ceramics in person.

Pink Glow at the Loch is one of the two largest works in Emily Powell's solo exhibition - painted during her residency on the island of Tiree.
Swipe to see Emily working on this painting on one of Tiree's white sandy beaches, head to our website to view a film about the residency or join us in the gallery to enjoy this new exhibition in person.

A collection of fabulous new small paintings from Mhairi McGregor, featuring the careful planning and preparation of colour and composition she's known for, just on a smaller scale.
All of these works are gouache on board and unframed - we're always happy to help with framing options.
What Emily Powell found on Tiree was a sky so big it seemed to hold the world in it, deep turquoise seas, colourful boats bobbing in the harbour, and beaches of bleached white sand shimmering with the iridescence of long crushed shells.
Free of artifice and convention, the colours sing, and Emily’s subjects – birds, rocks, boats, cottages – are all equally alive on the canvas. Following her brushstrokes we feel both the wind and the freedom. Here, all is well.
Join us in the gallery to enjoy Emily’s paintings, or view the virtual exhibition online at any time.
Our doors are closed today but there's still much to enjoy in our window and of course online.
We loved creating our latest window display, picking out elements from Emily Powell's colourful, joyful paintings made on her Tiree residency - join us in the gallery from 10am tomorrow or head to our website now to tour a virtual exhibition and view all of Emily's paintings online.

https://www.morningsidegallery.co.uk/artists/jane-cruickshank
We're delighted to have a collection of new paintings from Jane Cruickshank in the gallery - Using recognisable subject matter Jane employs an intense realism in her paintings, whether painting still life or portraits, always depicting her subjects with clarity and depth.
She is particularly fascinated by the everyday objects of the past – candle snuffers, earthenware bottles and antique books. Attracted to the subtle play of light and reflections across each surface, Jane’s paintings are both intimate studies of everyday objects and reminders of the great works of the Old Masters.
Join us in the gallery from 10am Monday - Saturday to enjoy these paintings or view on our website at any time.
Stob Dearg from the West Highland Way - one of three new paintings in the gallery from Julian Mason.
There are very few contemporary landscape painters who venture out in all weathers and insist on painting en plein air, but the results are truly worth it.
There is a feeling of really being there within Julian’s work. A quality that emerges through his quiet and dedicated study of the landscape around him and his sense that he is privileged to be a part of it.
View Julian’s paintings in the gallery when we re-open from 10am tomorrow, and on our website today or at any time.
Last chance to enjoy our June exhibition in the gallery today - new paintings by Carol Dewart PAI. RSW, Liz Knox, Lorna Sinclair, George Birrell, Francis Boag, Claire Beattie, Peter Munro and many more.
https://www.morningsidegallery.co.uk/artists/ann-oram
Cherry blossom in the Meadows - an iconc Edinburgh sight captured by Ann Oram.
The work of Scottish and French masters such as McTaggart and Monet were influences in Ann’s artistic development, and her broad tastes ranges beyond this to modern painters such as Zao Wui Ki and Peter Doig.
Travel has also continued to inform Ann’s work for a number of years. Having seen the changing of seasons across multiple landscapes in the UK and mainland Europe, an intuitive approach to colour and light continues to be an evocative, guiding force in Ann’s work.
https://www.morningsidegallery.co.uk/artists/tony-laverick
We're delighted to have some beautiful new pieces in the gallery from ceramicist Tony Laverick.
Drawing from various sources and cultures, Tony continues to evolve and expand upon his original vision.
Creating his own glazes and applying them in a variety of ways, his surfaces are a dazzling juxtaposition of controlled, linear designs with areas of expressive, painterly decoration.
‘Bird’s Eye View’ is one of a collection of new paintings from Carol Dewart, available to view in the gallery and online as part of our June exhibition.
Texture, pattern and light are the key elements in Carol’s paintings. By changing any of these factors, a painting can be constantly evolving with little variation in the actual subject matter.
The introduction of a specific texture or pattern can define the mood of the painting, and by integrating both disciplines Carol’s work develops in many directions.
Our June exhibition continues in the gallery this week - with a taste of what to expect in our window this morning. Beautiful colour in paintings from Lorna Sinclair and James Harrigan, sitting perfectly alongside new ceramics from Tony Laverick.
You can enjoy the exhibition in the gallery and online for the rest of this week, before our new solo exhibition from Emily Powell opens this Saturday.
Peter Munro is a featured artist in our June exhibition, running in the gallery and online until Saturday.
This latest collection of paintings is the result of a train of thought and ideas which have been evolving over many years, and bring together a number of Peter’s interests. They are as much about the contrasting nature and juxtaposition of the elements within the painting; the soft texture of the plumage against the metal structures, the organic forms contrasting with the fabricated objects, and the movement of the birds around the static props.
The character of the individual birds also play a part, helping to suggest the hint of a narrative, which adds to the overall dynamic. These are works that feel contemporary in ex*****on and palette but which invoke older painting traditions and techniques.
Liz Knox describes her work as ‘a collection of marks influenced by objects, words, music, locations and events experienced’.
Her paintings, often including flowers, are generally viewed from the perspective of a mind’s eye - Liz writes the stories in her own mind but acknowledges that viewers may find their own interpretation.
Join us in the gallery to enjoy these paintings and our full June exhibition - or head to our website to browse, buy or enquire.
https://www.morningsidegallery.co.uk/artwork/paintings/eigg-and-rum
A beautiful beach view of Eigg and Rum in this painting by Robert Kelsey.
With over twenty London solo shows under his belt, Robert has established an enviable following and reputation for his sensitive and atmospheric oil paintings, and especially for his beach subjects.
Favouring quiet and remote beaches in the Hebrides and West Coast of Scotland, Robert paints with sensitivity to interpret a sense of place through the power of light and colour.
Francis Boag also aims to create works that are evocative rather than literal in their sense of time and place. He works in thin layers of acrylic paint, built up to create layers of vivid colour and depth with rough, collaged elements. This adds texture and a vibrant, unpredictable quality to his surfaces.
We’re delighted to include a collection of new work from Francis in our June exhibition, running in the gallery and online until 22 June.
Anchored firmly within a realist tradition of painting, Peter Munro's beautifully rendered birds on masonry and metalwork seem to inhabit an imaginary space, both of this world and somehow also beyond it.
Peter is a featured artist in our June exhibition, on display in the gallery and online until 22 June.

A different setting for this new painting from Davy Brown - known for finding inspiration in the landscape of Galloway where he lives, this new collection transports us to sun-soaked southern France.
Regardless of location, all of Davy’s work displays a characteristic use of rich colours and textures, and a close understanding of tonal values.
Our new June exhibition is online now - do join us in the gallery for a drink from 2 - 4pm tomorrow afternoon to enjoy new paintings from Davy and many more.
