Sunday Life Drawing Club - July Dates Untutored Life drawing weekly at the Heart of Newhaven. Attended by a friendly bunch of folk. All levels of experience welcome.
Interested in some life drawing tuition? Join SSarah Calmustonight at the TThe Heart of Newhavenfor a session focusing on drawing the human figure and understanding anatomical planes. An anatomical plane is an imaginary plane used to divide the body, helping to describe the location of structures or the direction of movements in depicting the human form. Giocemmetti's drawing is a great example of how we can depict the human form in drawing using a series of interconnected plane surfaces. This session promises to be an enjoyable experience that will test and improve your drawing skills. Last Tuesday marked the beginning of a 5-week series of life drawing classes instructed by Sarah Calmus at The Heart of Newhaven Newhaven. The focus of the first session was on gesture and movement and you can see a few of the dynamic pictures from that class below.
Since the class has had low attendance, each session is open for students to drop in. Tonights’s class will focus on simplifying the human figure using shapes. The lesson aims to teach participants how to simplify the human form by visualising it as a series of interlocking shapes, which can help in capturing the proportions of the figure using a loose and fun approach. The class will run from 6:30 to 8:45pm and costs £30, this covers materials, model, and tuition.

Introducing Hot Easels: Your Co-working Studio Space
Are you an artist seeking a collaborative environment for artistic growth?
Starting from June, our bright top floor studio in The Heart of Newhaven community will be available for booking as personal space to work on art projects.
Hot Easels offers temporary daily studio space in a shared environment, fostering artistic growth through interaction with fellow creatives. Similar to hot desking, it allows you to book art space and be surrounded by a supportive community of artists, providing a platform to exchange ideas, skills, and gain inspiration. Running on select Thursdays, this co-working initiative aims to provide artists with a dedicated space for peer learning and discussion.

Our next life modelling workshop is happening next week on Saturday May 25th, 1.30-4.30pm at ’s studio at the Heart of Newhaven. This time it’s only for male, male-identifying, and male-leaning peeps because there is a lack of male models in the city. We will be exploring how our ideas about masculinity influence how we feel in our bodies and how we then carry ourselves.
The workshop will be co-facilitated by .
Tickets are £20/25 for comparatively lower/higher incomes.
Any questions just send a message. More info and booking via Citizen Ticket (my usual ticket platform).

Last week's color class at The Heart of Newhaven was a great success, and the students continued to learn about working with oils. We focused on using complementary colors and chose either a hot or cool palette to work with. The class also looked at artists such as Morandi to understand the importance of using muted hues in painting. We considered these elements when laying out the palette, mixing less vivid grays and browns to complement some of the brighter hues used in the artworks.
After Easter Lorna Johnson will be joining us in our studio at The Heart of Newhaven for a sort introduction to printmaking. These are some of the images from the lino session which Lorna led a few terms ago. The course will also cover Monoprinting, etching and collograph.
Sign up for the course on Wednesday evenings and learn some new skills.

During the fourth week of the color essentials course, the students were given an entire class to work on an A1 painting. The main objective of the class was to teach the students how to achieve color balance and harmony in a painting, using a triadic color system as a starting point. The students were given a choice of two setups, which offered a palette of three colors each. The first palette was orange-yellow, greenish-blue, and purplish-red, while the second one was green, orange, and violet. The students were encouraged to choose a dominant color and use the other two colors as accents in their painting. They also had to be mindful of their paint application and consider the rhythm of shapes in their composition to achieve a dynamic work of art.
Our tutored class runs at The Heart of Newhaven and the next block of classes will begin in May. Check the website for more info www.lookanddraw.co.uk
