Pre season session 2...Completed it!

Great work from our male and female Bishop Laney Sixth Form scholars as they put the work in for their second pre season session ahead of the new season.

We hope that many of you got to visit and enjoy the A level and GCSE Art exhibition last night - Please remember NOT to share photos of the work until it is graded due to exam rules. Due to similar rules, we could not share the STUNNING photos from the Hair and Beauty Skills Showcase from back in March! BUT NOW WE CAN!

It was a fantastic evening of fundraising and fashion. The Year 11 smashed their synoptic assessment with their 1920's looks on the catwalk. Year 9 & 10 took us back to the 90's & the 1970's, while Bishop Laney students chose TV & Film themes including Pirates of the Caribbean, Mamma Mia and Bratz. Year 13 completed their event management module and we would like to thank you all again for supporting us on the night.

The money raised is going towards a revamp of the beauty treatment rooms and we are excited to launch a new product range... shhh more on that soon . So book in for a treatment soon via email: [email protected]

Earlier this term Year 12 students Lewis Horner spent a week on a residential trip with the British Film Institute (BFI) in Bristol to learn Animation. The opportunity was introduced by Tim Copsey from the BFI (who previously spoke to our Media students when he visited last year). It was an incredible opportunity and Lewis did so well to get in as there were only 25 highly sought after places for the whole of the UK! Lewis received training from industry experts, including Aardman Studios!

Lewis commented: "BFI animation course was an amazing opportunity for me to develop my skills and learn new techniques alongside other like-minded people. It was incredible to go to the Aardman studios and see some behind the scenes for upcoming projects (including the new Wallace and Gromit). Also working on a short film that was then projected on the big screen at the Cube cinema in Bristol was great!"

Our Hair and Beauty students have been enjoying the perks with various trips, incl. a day at Ragdale Hall Spa and earlier this month at the Professional Hair & Beauty Show at ExCeL London. These trips are an opportunity to learn about the latest developments AND explore careers in this exciting industry.

Having taken in all the top tips and tricks at the show, students are ready to complete their Level 3 graded assessments. To do this they need 4x clients on MONDAY 25TH March. If you are available at 9:30am, we need 4 clients for a wash & blow dry service. 1x of these ideally needs to be a male with facial hair for a facial shape up service. Great to welcome some interesting and engaging speakers to Bishop Laney over the last few weeks!

Ahead of World Book Day we were glad to welcome Royal Literary Fund and children's author Inbali Iserles. She offered our sixth formers an in-depth Academic Writing Workshop. The session covered various aspects of academic writing, including essay structures, developing arguments, incorporating evidence, and enhancing clarity in writing - all great skills for A-levels and further education. Huge thank you to Inbali and the fund for their return visit and insights.

We also welcomed David from The OddBalls Foundation to speak at our Core Programme seminar last week, to raise awareness of the most common forms of cancer our young people face and the importance of early detection. Students have been learning more about keeping themselves mentally and physically healthy through their Personal Development and tutor sessions so this was a great round off with a visit from the Oddballs Foundation, complete with their distinctive Oddballs car!

Gentlemen... Need a fresh trim?! Our fantastic Level 3 Barber, Ben is looking for clients to complete his final assessments. All hair cuts and facial hair. Appointments are available for Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9.15am.

The Level 3 hairdressing students have also been doing some fantastic corrective colour work. This is a very specialist service which is usually rather expensive in the industry. We are delighted that planning permission has been granted for the renovation of Needham Tower to become the new home for Bishop Laney Sixth Form. It was a pleasure to show Ms Frazer around the site last week and for her to witness the fantastic progress that has already been made.

They worked with Emmanuel College's Pastry Chef for a focused workshop, where our students not only gained fantastic career insights from Karen's 25+ years in the sector, but also took in some top tips during a Q&A and enjoyed the delicious delicacies from their practical experience!

One student commented: "Wow what an excellent opportunity to work with a Pastry Chef from Emmanuel College, Cambridge; someone who is known for their high quality and standards of food served. It was a once in a life time opportunity for me and has inspired me to go further with my cooking!"

Hosts for the day! Welcome: Our KS5 Bishop Laney Sixth Form students hosted and mentored KS4 Hair and Beauty students from Riverside Meadows Academy: Wisbech Green. They are a newly opened school that doesn't currently have a sixth form setting, so the idea behind the visit was to showcase potential next steps and progression opportunities in the industry.

During their trip they had conditioning and styling services carried out on them by the Level 3 stylists at Bishop Laney. Their trip was completed with a Q&A where our Level 3 students were asked prepared questions relevant to their training experience. A wonderful opportunity for both sets of students, it was a pleasure to welcome them and show them what we do best!

Our Level 2 students are in need of clients for THIS Friday (1st) and next Tues (5th). 9:15am if possible. Please SHARE widely!
