🦉 Knock knock, hoo's there? 🦉

Getting unusually close glimpses of our native wildlife is definitely a perk of the job! Whilst completing their habitat checks before beginning work, our team recently came across this sleepy tawny owl nestled in the very top of a declining fir tree (second pic marks the spot)! We of course left the owl and tree as they were, so hopefully it was able to continue its nap...

Beautiful sunny day for party preparation, and always awesome to be able to use our Spiderlift to help out in our community and make things run a little easier 💪😉 Top bunting team and .ankers.sound getting the job done!

Hope you all enjoy your bank holiday weekend, fingers crossed for some more of that summer sun...🌞🥂

🌳Another week, another Monterey Pine!🌳Our team expertly dismantled this giant over the course of two days last week, and we even had a bit of sun on the last day. After the dismantle comes the clear up - no small task when every piece weighs upwards of 2 ton! 💪💪

Dartmoor Tree Surgeons have recently had the privilege of working on a 300-400 year old veteran oak in Sidmouth, a complicated job involving consultants, cranes and much checking of weather forecasts...especially when the wind started to pick up again! Veteran trees are incredibly important for biodiversity, as well as often becoming impressive in their size - our office dog Hamish graciously provided some scale to help give an idea of the size of the timber that was being worked with!

You can read our full article on this interesting and unusual project by following the link below 👇👇👇

First week back and straight in at the deep end! 💪 Our team have had a challenging but rewarding week so far, dismantling two large Monterey Pines perched on the cliffs above Sidmouth. Unfortunately these trees had been weakened by fungus and had to be removed for safety reasons, as you can see they are not the kind of size you can ignore! Great to have a bit of winter sun and see our kit gleaming in the light too...and that view from the top! 🤩🤩

Thanks to lead climber for the pics.

An update on the Sidmouth Monterey Pines:

I hope you are all well and enjoying the festive season! I wanted to provide you with a further update with respect to the Monterey Pines which have recently been discussed, as a course of works has now been approved and will be implemented in the New Year.

Having been assessed by the tree officer and discussed with the council team, in addition to the expert consultant assessment already in place, I can confirm that both the trees in question will need to be felled and that the reasons behind this are entirely to do with safety. As noted previously, one of these pines has unfortunately been crippled by cauliflower fungus and is in need of immediate action. The second tree (the one with five stems) has also now been cleared for felling, primarily due to the increased wind stresses it will experience once it’s companion tree has been removed.

Many of the larger Monterey Pines seen in the Sidmouth area were planted in the last century or in the late Victorian times and can be expected to be coming towards the end of their lives now – most estimates give Monterey Pines an average of only 90 years as a lifespan so it is quite natural that these trees are now beginning to decline. In both of these cases, though, we are happy to confirm that replanting of a new species will occur once the ground is prepared. If you would like to read through the arboricultural report which was used to reach this decision we are able to provide this to you by kind permission of the property owner, please don’t hesitate to get in touch using the details below to request a copy.

As always you are very welcome to get in touch with us to discuss these works further! The best way to do so is to either ring us directly on 01395 232854 or to email us at [email protected] .

Best wishes,

Dartmoor Tree Surgeons Ltd.

SIDMOUTH community for the people
Hello all,

We are the tree surgery company which has been contracted to undertake the works to the Monterey Pines. I am just posting here both to provide a little more information and also to give you all our contact details in case you would like to speak to us further.

The trees in question have been monitored since 2019, when it first became apparent that there was an issue of decay. Since then, we have confirmed that the central tree is badly infested with cauliflower fungus (Sparassis crispa). As well as having been inspected by highly qualified consultants, to be doubly sure we have also used a device called a resistograph which has confirmed that the tree is in an advanced state of decay. This fungus generally attacks the root system and base of a tree so is not highly visible. It is not always a death sentence, however in this case has sadly been extremely damaging and has without doubt caused harm to the buttress roots of the tree to an extent that it is now considered dangerous and does require felling. This has been discussed with the local tree officer who has agreed with our assessment and has consented for the works to go ahead.
With respect to the second tree, there are concerns that it will become exposed by the removal of the infected tree. Discussions are currently taking place to determine whether it will be safe to leave as it is or whether removal or reduction would be more appropriate.

Dartmoor Tree Surgeons was unfortunately not aware that a request for a Tree Protection Order was in the system, nor that the request had been delayed – when we began planning for the works and checked for a Tree Protection Order initially there was no documentation in place. As a precaution, we had decided to delay the start to the felling (which was scheduled for this Monday 29th) and instead opted to check in with the council, who confirmed that they would be attending to assess. Following the meeting with the tree officer no TPO has been issued for this tree or any of the others.

Whilst we do undertake fellings, as tree surgeons our primary focus is tree care. We also know how loved trees can be in a community and we would encourage this wherever possible! We are lucky in East Devon to have a particularly impressive complement of unusual and veteran trees and we are proud to regularly be involved in their careful maintenance. In this case, though, safety has to come first, which I am sure you can understand.

If there are any further questions we can answer please don’t hesitate to get in touch, although please do also remember that this is a job relating to a private household and that we therefore cannot share all information in that respect! You are welcome to call or email us directly using the contact details on our page and we will be happy to help as much as we can.

Best wishes,

Dartmoor Tree Surgeons
