Join artist activists (CWxWC) (Cecilia Wee and William Crosby) for Our Muddy Inheritance, a hands-on discussion and sound recording workshop exploring what is found along the banks of the River Exe, physically, metaphorically, and historically. Together we will record, collect, and reflect on the flows of the Exe, as ways of revaluing place and creating an account of the ecological, economic, and social challenges we face today. In Chinese, water is often a metaphor for money. Where does the water go? Into the mud.
You are invited to share experiences of, responses to, and explore connections between ecologies and economies, as well as gaining experience of field recording. Sound recordings from the workshop will form part of a sound art work for radio to be broadcast as part of River Radio.
No experience of sound recording required! We welcome Exeter residents, especially those who have a connection to the Custom House, from Global Ethnic Majority backgrounds and, who work with money, mud, earth, water, or all of the above.

With the growth of Exeter Pride’s sponsors this year ensuring we were able to return, we want to work with individuals from a variety of areas of our community to discuss how we continue to grow our sponsorship in an ethical way. We welcome you all to be a part of the conversation and explore creating up to date and relevant ethical sponsorship guidelines and polices that ensures Exeter Pride can continue to hold its yearly celebration but does so in an ethical and sustainable way.

The first meeting of the working group is in person at Exeter Phoenix on Wednesday 4th September at 18:30. If you would like to be a part of this group please complete the form in our bio even if you cannot attend the first in person meeting.

Latest Police Update:

The update from your Exeter police team Friday 09.08.24 at 14:36hrs.

Update on past few days:

Following a limited, but widely circulated, social media post regarding protest / riots in Exeter there has been a palpable sense of tension.
However, the information regarding protest / riots has been unfounded and there has been no suggestion of any issues within the city.

Friday 09.08.24

There is no information to suggest any potential protest or issues in Exeter today.

Saturday 10.08.24

The local police team have been made aware by the community of the following and I wish to provide reassurance for both:

a vigil at 12:00hrs being organised by Exeter Together Against Racism.
Exeter City v Rotherham football match.
The police are closely monitoring any information and currently there is nothing to suggest any issues.

Police response for today and the weekend:

The police continue to monitor information and are fully engaged with the coordinated national response.
To provide reassurance (and not seek sympathy!) your local police team have been moved to 12 hour shifts and most are working their rest days. This provides more visibility of officers to be in the community and currently I have them on foot in the city centre areas. Do stop and talk to them if you see them.
There is a capability and capacity within the Devon and Cornwall Police to respond, if it was needed, to any issues. They are under a central command structure.
Be aware that some officers may be dressed in a different style of uniform (we call it public order kit but can also be called riot gear in the media!). This is NOT an indication of any issues. They are on standby for any issues nationally as part of the ‘standing army’ referred to in the media. They may be on foot in Exeter city centre if they are not needed elsewhere. This is my request to provide reassurance to you all. Please don’t be alarmed – I am trying to lower the concerns, not add to them!!
Inspector Dave Turner and myself continue to be on duty covering both early and late shifts and are available all weekend if you need any concerns addressed.

Please share if in Exeter
The update from your Exeter police team Wednesday 07.08.24 at 14:15hrs is:

We are aware of several social media posts suggesting issues in Exeter on Wednesday 07.08.24.
Devon and Cornwall Police have a full command structure based at HQ which are
Collating and reviewing all information.
Linked in with the national picture.
overseeing a number of allocated resources to support any area of the force which needs either specialist or additional staffing.
The Exeter neighbourhood team are deployed out into each Exeter patch. The neighbourhood support team are on foot patrol in the Sidwell street area.

Currently there is no change to the atmospherics in Exeter city centre.

My request is:
the increasing energy from social media is calmed as it is not reflecting the reality on the ground.
There are currently no confirmed protests in Exeter.
That any suggestion of counter protests is discouraged as it adds to the complexity of policing any potential protest.

Kind regards

Inspector Nathan Johnson

Exeter’s role in the British Empire will be discussed in a talk by prominent city historian Dr Todd Gray at the Exeter Historic Guildhall next month.

It will focus on research which, for the first time, will reveal Exeter’s part in the British Empire.

The talk, Inclusive Exeter: Exeter and the British Empire, 1575-2024, will be held at the Guildhall in Exeter High Street on Saturday 7 September, at 10am (doors open 9.30am). Tickets are now on sale.

The British Empire permeated Exeter as it did every other part of the country. But little is known about its connections to the city.
