Our Dementia Diagnosis Days take place every Friday and are designed for patients that have been recently diagnosed with early onset Dementia or memory issues.

The day will start at 10am, when carers can drop off their relative, access some support themselves from knowledgeable staff here at the hospice, have time just to talk, or go off to do things they need to do.

The nature of the sessions are flexible, dependent on the group members, their needs and desires. Our team will build a day that focuses meaningful socialising with peers with activities chosen that can improve focus, memory and recall. Whilst it should be a day of quality and informed care, it is importantly a day with friends filled with fun and normality.

We have a BRAND NEW service coming to Rossendale Hospice!

Music for Memory, starting Wednesday 1st November, weekly from 2pm - 3.30pm. Open to those who are residents in Rossendale who have a Rossendale GP.

This is a NEW service starting at Rossendale Hospice. We will provide a safe place for people living with memory issues to create music together and socialise, whilst at the same time having fun.

Carers may stay and join in, or have a quiet space in the hospice where they can sit with other carers to have a cuppa and a chat – a break from their caring role. Staff will be on hand to support and offer advice as needed. Tea and biscuits will be served.

A regular, familiar creative activity helps build resilience to the stress of living with memory issues and can extend the time needed for 24-hour care.
This is a free service we are providing, but gratefully accept donations towards our work.

Please get in touch if you would like to come along and enjoy the company of others while singing some old favourites plus some new songs. Singing is great therapy for everyone. It provides a physical and mental workout, and can be beneficial for those with memory problems as it is a whole brain activity. It also helps with other skills such as orientation and is one of the last skills to be lost in memory issues.

Pre-booking is essential - We anticipate this will be a popular service, so please contact Catherine Hargreaves or Yvonne White if you wish to attend and secure a space, as places will be limited. Tel: 01706 393870

As dementia progresses, the brain makes less melatonin. This can make it harder for people to fall and stay asleep.💤

Together with the increasing darker nights and a change in circadian rhythms ( especially when the clocks⏰️ go back later this month). We may notice that people living with dementia may experience additional distress and agitation.

Here's some top tips

✅️ Keep to a routine
✅️ Get as much natural light as possible
✅️ Be aware of your own stress levels
✅️ Offer reassurance
✅️ Drawn curtains before it gets dark.
✅️ Avoid TV programmes with volience/ crime /loud noises.

Food for Thought on
Dementia Friendly Dining

Lunchtime is one of the most important parts of any Filo day. Sharing a meal with others is a bonding experience and nourishes, in both senses of the word. Endorsing this, recent research from the University of Oxford suggests that communal eating increases feelings of wellbeing and enhances one’s sense of contentment - this is something you’ll see on any day with any of our groups. Sharing meals is particularly significant for our clients, as, for many, it is a rare occurrence.

Lunchtimes at The Filo Project are never rushed allowing for conversations to develop, banter to be exchanged and time and taste to be savoured.

Good Housekeeping magazine recently published a helpful article on Dementia Friendly Dining including suggestions around changing taste buds and portion size. Click the link to learn how to make the eating experience for those living with dementia as pleasing as possible. https://shorturl.at/sHIVW

How the everyday can transform dementia care 17/09/2023

How the everyday can transform dementia care Libby Price, co-founder and director of The Filo Project shares how the not-for-profit organisation is supporting people with dementia

13/09/2023

Dementia is the biggest health and social care challenge we face and continues to cause devastation.⁣ One thing dementia can affect is a person’s personality and habits, which may lead to changes in behaviour that can be challenging.

Some of the most common behavioural changes include agitation, repetitive behaviour, accusations, sleep disturbance, social withdrawal, and aggression. This week, we're looking at how to cope with these behaviours while caring for someone with dementia.

Finding your own ways to cope will be unique to you as every situation is different. However, here are some suggestions that may help:

- Try to remember the person isn't behaving this way on purpose - they may be experiencing a different reality to you - and try not to take it personally.

- Being compassionate and acknowledging the person’s feelings can help to reduce distress.

- Try to adapt to the current situation. Trying to get things back to how they were or expecting too much can sometimes cause more problems.

- If the behaviour disrupts an activity, such as washing, ask yourself if this task needs to be done now or if you could return to it later.

- Engaging the person in another activity they enjoy can help shift their focus onto something else.

- If the person behaves aggressively, try not to let yourself build up any resentment, even if the behaviour seems to be aimed at you.

- If you feel frustrated or angry, try stepping away - and give yourself some time and space. If you do lose your temper, try not to feel guilty.

- Talk to a friend, professional or another carer about the situation and how you're feeling.

- It’s important to have a break sometimes. For example, ask loved ones to spend time with the person or look at local day centres.
