Space Youth Services
We are a Devon based youth charity, dedicated to unlocking potential in young people.
Making spirits bright at Magdalen Road Christmas Market! ππ
Our Volunteer Co-ordinator Kirsty, Senior Youth Support Worker in Training Ellie and a Young Volunteer from our 100 Club Youth Centre (Exeter) brought joy to St Leonards, Exeter.
They helped stallholders unload their vehicles, set up stalls, and engaged in conversations to share information about who we are and the mission of Space Youth Services. The festive ambience was delightful, and our Young Volunteer actively immersed themselves, serving as a wonderful ambassador for Space.
Thank you to the St Leonards Neighbourhood Association for the opportunity. Let's continue to spread the community spirit!
A special mention to the extra lady in the picture, one of the stallholders and the owner of Perfectly Boo ! π
If you're inspired to join our mission as a volunteer, reach out to us or visit our website for more information!
π Join the Ninth Hub's journey to South Devon, where 13 team members gathered for three days of impactful activities. While the main focus was processing Small Grant Fund applications, the experience extended to team-building games, a beach walk, and a focused grant allocation session. The young participants, hailing from different corners of Devon, demonstrated impressive professionalism and integrity in their decision-making process.
The event was partly funded by a grant from & Partners , plus the young people contributed Β£10 towards food costs meaning that the whole event was delivered at minimal costs to our organisation.
On this trip, they processed this year's final round of Small Grant Fund applications (SGF), built upon existing staff and young peopleβs relationships, bringing people together to provide opportunities for new relationships to flourish and to have fun. The Ninth Hub awarded Β£33k in grants - this will have such a positive impact on young people and their communities across Devon. πΊ The BBC and Stop Scams UK ran some awesome programmes around scams that you can catch on iPlayer.
π Our Online Youth Centre was interested in what young people had to say about Cyber Security. The Youth Workers ran some polls on Discord, and these are the results!
βHow would you answer these questions?!
Hey guys,
You may have seen a post recently on our Facebook that wasn't our usual. Our account was temporarily taken over by remote hackers and used to advertise some boots! We're still your go-to youth work charity, but we haven't branched out into boot sales just yet!
If you did see this and click through to make a purchase, we believe this to be a scam. We would recommend seeking guidance on dealing with online scams, from Citizens Advice at https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/scams/get-help-with-online-scams/
Thank you for your understanding and support and apologies for any confusion π©·

Meet C, a remarkable member of our No Limits Youth session at The Station Youth Centre (Newton Abbot)! C dove headfirst into our exciting trips, taking on every challenge. Their proudest moment? Conquering the BMX track! π΄ββοΈ Initially hesitant, C pushed past their worries and went for it.
In C's own words: "The Trips were so fun, I tried lots of new things. My favourite was the BMX. I had never done that before, I won a trophy for being brave and most improved, I am proud I tried something new. I am not afraid to fall now. I also did surfing and I was not afraid to fall, it was very fun. I went on the swimming trip and it was so cold but I couldnβt give a monkeys I went in anyway.
I had lots of fun over the summer. I like being busy and doing things in the daytime because itβs fun. If I didnβt do the trips I would be bored and I like being busy and trying new things."
C's enthusiasm was infectious, reminding us all to embrace the thrill of the unknown.

π Embracing every adventure with boundless energy, this senior from our open-access session at radiates enthusiasm. They're always prepared for a journey filled with laughter and camaraderie, eagerly hopping onto the minibus with their friends. Their reassuring presence uplifts those who may hesitate, ensuring everyone feels included.
Facing a fear of deep water head-on, they fearlessly joined in on two out of three water-themed trips, a testament to their courage. It's clear that these experiences hold a special place in their heart, bringing immense joy and gratitude.
π£οΈ In their own words, βMy summer was fun. The trips made it a lot better, and they made it better for me because it gave me something to do rather than sitting at home. My favourite trip was the paddle board because it was a massive board and I got to go on with all my mates. I was a bit scared to go in the water, but I am a strong swimmer but I didn't want to miss out because it looked so fun.
I also went on the adrenaline quarry trip, that was really good. It was nice my friends being there, having fun, and having them around made me feel safer about going into the water.
And finally, the laser tag was also really good because I got to go with my mates, I just enjoyed getting the chance to run around the woods.
I really appreciate the opportunity I got to go on trips and am thankful.β

During the summer term, we had the opportunity to participate in Exeter Science Centre's project centred around Climate Change. The exhibition, displayed at Make Tank in Exeter Highstreet, was a testament to their expertise and commitment to the cause.
Exeter Science Centre took the lead in inviting young individuals from the Online Youth Centre (Discord) to contribute photographs under the theme 'What Makes the World Special to You.' The young contributors displayed creativity, and their photographs were displayed in the window from September 6th to 10th, leaving an impact on passersby.
On the launch day, we took a group of young participants from Bideford Youth Centre and The Hive Youth Centre (Exmouth) to the exhibition. It was an educational experience, delving into virtual reality, art, poetry, gadgets, and toys, all geared towards understanding our planet and the issue of climate change.
We would like to say thank you to Exeter Science Centre for their efforts in organising this project. Their dedication to raising awareness about Climate Change is evident. We look forward to the possibility of future collaborations and appreciate the opportunity to be part of this meaningful initiative.
Thanks to the incredible support from the UKYouth-funded Inspire22 program, over 60 young change-makers in our community took charge and made some amazing positive impacts! We're especially proud to have backed five outstanding individuals who journeyed to London to showcase their hard work.
During this trip, our youth ambassadors had the chance to connect with teams from all over the UK, exchanging inspiring ideas and experiences. It was heartwarming to witness these young leaders proudly displaying their accomplishments, achieved through sheer dedication and determination.
Bideford's young champions took a sustainable stance, focusing on food awareness and the importance of reducing food miles. Meanwhile, in Holsworthy, with support from our incredible community team, the focus was on giving their hometown a sparkling makeover with a fantastic litter pick as part of a broader community event. Kudos to all involved - you're making a real difference! ππ
And guess what? Our young people were thrilled to get a taste of Insta-fame by making it onto UK Youth's Instagram Story! π Keep soaring high, champions!
π§ The theme for Youth Mental Health Day 2023 is
βοΈ Being brave doesnβt always mean fighting dragons or facing down zombies in an apocalypse!
πͺ Bravery is building confidence despite facing difficult situations, developing social confidence, or trying something new and being willing to accept that you might not succeed at it.
π Being brave means something different to everyone, and your definition is valid.
π The goal of this year's Youth Mental Health Day is to help young people gain confidence and courage to achieve whatever it is they are aiming for - to be the best version of themselves.
π€ How are you going to today?
π± Weβre excited to share the latest from our Georgieβs Youth Centres (Barnstaple) Garden, made possible by the generous support of local Asda funding! Their garden has flourished with the addition of a fantastic raised bed, where a vibrant array of veggies, herbs, and spices now thrive. Tomatoes, chillies, runner beans - you name it, theyβre growing it!
But the real stars? Our bountiful strawberries! π Their success is a testament to the dedication of our young participants, who have been hands-on every step of the way - from planting and weeding to nurturing and now, savouring the rewards.
The most entertaining chapter? Our epic chilli taster sessions! πΆοΈ A special shoutout to COOP for keeping us stocked up on milk as our brave young taste testers faced the heat! π₯΅ We had some very thirsty, teary and sweaty young people after those challenges.
What a journey it's been - filled with laughter, learning, and the joy of reaping what we sow. Here's to many more fruitful adventures in Georgieβs Garden! πΏπ

On August 7th, our Social Action Team hosted a dynamic Voice and Influence event at Tiverton Youth Centre. Seven inspiring young individuals from Bideford, Tiverton, and Holsworthy joined us, along with our Senior Leadership Team and Space Trustees.
We engaged in insightful consultation activities, giving youth the chance to discuss their projects and learn about our Trustees' roles. The day was a hit, with overwhelmingly positive feedback from our young leaders!
Huge thanks to Cafe 24 for the delicious lunch and kudos to Chris and Caroline from the Communities Team for their support.
This event is part of our mission to empower youth and shape the future of Space. Our Social Action Team, led by Emily, two dedicated social action workers, Faith and Eliie, and Volunteer Coordinator, Kirsty, are excited to host more events and celebrate our amazing volunteers.
