Hello, peeps…and a happy new year! It is that time of year again when - en masse- we begin to make those big health/fitness changes. For many, this will mean investing time, energy and MONEY in the support of a Personal Trainer. Now, as many (if not all) of you know, I have worked in fitness for about 15 years and have developed some (VERY STRONG!) opinions on what I think Personal Training/Coaching/Instructing should and shouldn’t ‘look’ like in terms of quality of delivery, content, professionalism etc. However- as most of you will also have a view/insight- I would like to canvas for thoughts on what poor traits/behaviours you have seen or experienced in respect of PT’s in action….fire away!!!

As much as gender is somewhat of a sliding scale (hormonally...and otherwise), generally, women do not have the hormonal (anabolic/muscle building) potential to create large increases in muscle mass -certainly in the early stages when strength increases are due, primarily to neural adaptations- from weight training.

What is likely to be GAINED, though, is greater muscle 'tone', improved posture (helping us look and feel 'taller' and more confident), increased ability to lose body fat/manage weight, increases in self esteem from mastering new skills......plus an endless amount of variety to add to your fitness repertoire.

15 years in fitness and my anatomical doodles have got NO better😆. Having said that; pictures paint a thousand words (this sketch taken from my PT tablet from my session with RV) so it is often useful to illustrate to a client the technique cues you are talking about...

Despite the lack of artistry, this one is all about range of motion (ROM) and shows- as much as we want to maximise the amplitude/range of a movement- we shouldn’t embellish it beyond the prescribed technique framework. In this exercise, a lot of people attempt a ‘reach’ that is past the point that the core-brace, neutral spine and soft knee angle can be maintained: Losing the core and neutral spine, specifically, leaves the lumber (lower back) exposed to increased stresses and a propensity for injury as it moves into flexion…

Not only do 'small' details hamper performance in the gym, they can massively detract from weight loss in terms of diurnal hormone imbalances and the possibility of dysphoria (def. a state of unease or generalized dissatisfaction with life) during the day which can lead to seeking energy-rich foods...hmmm

This will include covering how to use CV kit; Technique (yes- even for walking/running!), self-evaluate and monitoring appropriate intensity & duration and planning how/when to progress

and principles of resistance training (weights machines); including range-of-motion (ROM) and time under tension (TUT) to maximise efficiency.

“I just, well…want to look more toned!” but what does that mean and how to…?

Muscle TONE (tonus or muscle stiffness) is defined as the “tension in a muscle at rest” and it is the maintenance of a partial contraction of a muscle. It is a mechanism for efficiency
We all have it and it serves us all day, every-day in a number of ways (continually stabilises joints, maintains posture, contributes to balance) and without it, we would simply flop to the floor!

Aesthetically, a toned body is regarded as looking lean, fit and healthy; toned muscle is muscle that's ready for action!
Best way to observe it is if you lay the back of your hand on a flat surface with your fingers fully straight. Now, relax. See how your fingers curl back on themselves…? That is Muscle Tone (or in this case tone in the tendinous aspect of forearm and palm muscles…for any Anat/Physiology pedants out there!). There is a high level of tone there because we use our fingers…a lot! Conversely, levels of inactivity can lead to some muscles adopting a more flaccid state and these can look loose & wobbly!

In order to combat this and create a toned physique, we can simply move/use them more and exercise – specifically weight/resistance training as it can very directly target muscle groups where we want to increase tone- is a really effective and efficient way to do this.

However, if you have a relatively high body fat %, you will not see any change in the way you look by working to increase your muscle tone alone…so no amount of triceps extensions and/or relentless biceps curls will matter. You will need to be exercising to lose weight, reduce body fat and increase muscle tone at the same time.

The best way to do this is by choosing a programme with a high metabolic value…simple!...?
