When the Olympics starts on Friday, you'll see hijabis competing in various sports. However, none of them will represent France. Why? Because French government workers have been banned from displaying "ostentatious religious symbols" since 2004.
Even though the IOC allow hijabs and don't allow religious discrimination, they defended France's ban on the grounds that "athletes competing for French national teams are considered to be civil servants who must act in accordance with national contexts".

(I know Islam isn't a race, but it's often racialised, which is why I decided to post here.)

Happy Pride Month from all of us here at ARES! As we all know by now, Pride has its roots in the Stonewall riot. But how many of you know about STAR, which formed shortly after? STAR (Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries) was founded in 1970 by Marsha P Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. It should be noted that the founders were both trans women who self-described as transvestites, like many trans people of the time.
STAR was established to tackle homeless in and advocate for the rights of the q***r and s*x worker communities. Both of those communities suffered (and still suffer) disowning from their families and disenfranchisement from wider society. There was (and still is) a large overlap of both groups.
What separated STAR from similar groups of the time was its inclusion of trans rights and aim of q***r liberation over assimilation. It was an anti-capalist liberation movement that sought to provide housing, food and services to those in need. It was funded by survival s*x work from Johnson and Rivera, who took people in at STAR house.
Despite only running for 3 years, STAR continues to be massively influential. Marsha P Johnson would later join ACT UP (AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power) and use her experience in STAR to protest government inaction towards AIDS. To this day, leftist activists credit STAR as an inspirational model. You can read the manifesto in the comments.

I wiII say arguing that BIack peopIe had Iess rights than before the enIightenment is ridicuIous. It's akin to saying BIack peopIe are better off now due to sIavery. I can understand the cavoite of wanting to keep a bunch of rich 6F peopIe from decIaring that they own the shop, but borders are the tooI they use to be abIe to do that.

"Human groups have had cultures for as long as we're able to detect anything within the archaeological record. Nation states have only realistically existed in their current form since the French Revolution, and corporations since the turn of the 17th century. Nation states do not produce cultures. They are a product of a very specific Western European cultural understanding. Conversely, corporations are not an omnipresent force. They are a recent human development fitted to a particular economic model which has only been around for a few hundred years and it would be ludicrous to imply that they will survive for a few hundred more.

Your human rights are not given to you by a nation state. Nation states made it their business to claim they were protecting your human rights from corporations - a creation of nation states themselves.

Likewise, borders are a fairly recent invention, stretching back no further than a few thousand years and by no means pre-dating distinct cultural groupings. They in fact exist as a tool for controlling membership to cultures rather than ways to create and cause them to flourish. Frankly, it is entirely possible for a person to move and join and participate in another culture that they were not born into without dominating or stealing. Cultural appropriation is a product of hierarchy, not one of the act of changing culture being wrong. Cultures throughout time have welcomed people who wish to join, participate in, and engage far more often than they have sought to exclude and preserve differences based on the idea that culture requires a birthright. The only reason to behave in such a manner is to protect a culture from being intentionally destroyed by an outside force. People wishing to come and participate are never, will never and have never been a threat.

The idea that the militaries of the Bronze Age were a defensive force against conquering relies you taking things like the Sumerian Kings list at face value. While the elite certainly wrote that were their role, there is little to no evidence to suggest that this was anything more propaganda. The general populace was largely at more danger from their own military than they were, say raiders from the zagros mountains. Generally speaking, there's little evidence that your average Bronze Age citizen cared that much about what the king was doing or who he happened to be. Bronze Age culture is not a product of the elites. It's the product of groups of farmers working out how to get a decent canal system working between them.

The upper stone age was already organised into settled, agrarian settlements. Ones with little need for an organised military and very little evidence of much raiding.

The vast majority of the archaeological record shows that intergroup interactions between humans largely revolved around trading, drinking, small parties, festivals, sporting matches and s*x. Conversely, the evidence for intergroup violence is pretty rare and generally in the purview of the contemporary societal elites.
The idea that the right to property is foundational to all other rights is a bit strange as that has only ever served to harm the rights of other human beings. Particularly considering that when that right was conceptualised, one of the main property they were concerned with was the right to own Black people. I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume you agree that slavery is a violation of a person's human rights.

Just because the European enlightenment enshrined several of the rights we treasure, that does not mean they did not exist and were not observed beforehand. Couple that with the fact that in real terms, a feudal peasant had infinitely more control of their life than an early modern factory worker and the progress of human rights since the enlightenment has required a necessary reaction against many of the rights enlightenment took away from people, such as the right to belong to a community, the right of freedom of assembly, and the right to decide how one organises one's day. Women's rights, the global majority's rights, and s*xual rights etc. were won from the enlightenment because the enlightenment took them away. Particularly in the case of the rights of the global majority as prior to the enlightenment there were no concept analogous to race, and in fact, the proportion of people who were not white living in Europe before the French Revolution was higher than after it.

In summary, nation states have provided none of those things, have generally only served to take them away or used them as bargaining chips to gain service out of people and aren't an institution worth protecting. Any attempt to do so, whether you mean to or not, will devolve into xenophobia as there is nation state without xenophobia. They are dependent on each other for both their existence."

People come into our group with their racism, anti-Blackness and make our group, despite being a free resource to educate themselves, an un-safe space, and think that as a free resource to educate themselves, that the Black and Brown admins and members are required to educate them, rather than volunteer. We even have resources on how to check the validity of a source, so this overall is a terrible take. Stop expecting Black and Brown folks to spend their time and energy educating you for free, especially if you're going to give them abuse and not listen to them whilst you're at.
