This Saturday, we are absolutely buzzing to have what we know will be one of the best gigs McChuills sees this year, the one and only Nasser Bouzida, aka The Bongolian (Big Boss Man)

The frontman from the mighty Big Boss Man (for it is he) is going to be here under that guise with which he’s just dropped his sixth (and maybe best) album, Harlem Hipshake.

His full live show really is something else, so we cannot recommend this one enough. So don’t hang about and grab one of the last few tickets we have left and we’ll see you on Saturday night. You know it makes sense.

✊🏻🏴‍☠️💚

We also weren’t missing the chance to have a wee chat with the bold Nasser about all things music. Enjoy.

What can folk expect from yr McChuills set?

Imagine if the Starship Enterprise from Star Trek crashed into the Incredible Bongo Band and had a baby then your somewhere near. Huge bongo breaks, funky Hammond grooves and sci-fi space sounds all rolled into one.

The Bongolian is a different animal from yr work as part of Big Boss Man. What prompted you to do it as a solo thing?

In the year 2001, I bought a Fostex R8 reel to reel tape machine and started my journey in recording and The Bongolian was the fruits of this labour, many fun hours layering up congas, bongos cowbells and drums. Sorry to the neighbours!

That Latin soul scene in 60s NY is a big inspiration for you on the new album in particular. Can you tell us a bit about it and why it connects with you so much?

In 1987 I went on my first weekend mod rally to Exmouth and it was there I heard the music of "Ray Barretto", Mongo santamaria and Tito Puente and it changed my life forever. I learned how to play the latin rhythms of Ma****lo and Tumao and Clave, then set about putting into a more funky setting.

Who have been the biggest influences on you as a musician?

As an organ player Jimmy McGriff and Jackie mITTOO are my two biggest influences, as a drummer Zigaboo Modeleste, Keith Moon and Bernard Purdie and as a percussionist, Tito Puente will always be the man. Playing with the godfather of Blue Beat Laurel Aitken when I was 16 was a great moment, my band The Loafers were his backing band for a few years in the 80's and I had a jam in the states with Jack White back at his house one evening after a few beers, played drums on Morcheeba’s album The Antidote which was an eye opener as it was one of the biggest bands of the ‘90s.

What was yr debut gig?

That would be playing drums at my mum’s work do when she worked at BT at the Out of Town club in Padworth. I was 11.

What was yr best gig?

That would be playing drums at my mum’s work do when she worked at BT at the Out of Town club in Padworth. I was 11.

What was yr worst gig?

Probably when I got sacked from Bad Manners after smoking a spliff with legendary trombone player Rico Rodriguez on the tour bus and running around the stage with a conga on my head trying to upstage Buster Bloodvessel.

What would be yr ideal gig?

On the bridge of the Enterprise, though that’s would be highly illogical.

What’s next for you?

I’m working on an arthouse film telling the stories of The Grimm Fairy Tales set in 1967, so there’s an art exhibition happening in September in Berlin around that. The new Big Boss Sound album (my ska/reggae project) is out in September on Liquidator Records, the next Bongolian album is recorded and will be out end of this year on Blow Up Records and I have a new solo album (the follow-up to Cookin’ At The Organ) is out on Spinout Nuggets Records in March. Oh, and Big Boss Man’s sixth album is being recorded right now and will be out late next year.

I also teach music three days a week at a school for the deaf.

Why should folk come to McChuills when yr playing?

To experience a bongo-bashing hammond swirling free love happening and it’s a really long way from Newbury…

The Bongolian plays McChuills on Saturday August 31st. Last few tickets available on Skiddle via link in comments.

McChuills artist profile: BLACK CELEBRATION

Love Depeche Mode? Don’t get to see them very often? Well, we’ve got the next best thing coming in November. Black Celebration are the UK’s #1 tribute to the ‘Mode and will be performing in Glasgow for the very first time right here in McChuills.

Expect a full two-hour set of all your favourite hits and deep cuts, including Enjoy The Silence, Personal Jesus, Stripped, Walking In My Shoes, I Feel You, Just Can’t Get Enough and more, as well as some of the early material that Dave and Martin haven’t played themselves in years.

Support on the night will come from the legendary RetroDave, who will be doing an ‘80s electronic DJ set to get the party started.

Tickets are on sale now on Ticketsource and you can get them via the link in the comments below…

Don’t hang about, these are already flying out the door…

✊🏻🏴‍☠️💚

We also took the time to have a wee chat with Black Celebration too, about all things Deprche Mode and more. Enjoy.

What can folk expect from yr McChuills set?
It’s always interesting to put a setlist together for a venue. We can’t leave out all those huge anthems and the classic tracks that people expect, but in addition to those we like include some lesser heard tracks. So expect some album tracks, B-sides and some re-workings. Programming from scratch allows us to put something together we think will work well live.

Why Depeche Mode?
Serendipity. Depeche were the standout electronic band of that time and we just wanted to see if we could produce something like that without having any prior musical training or interest in music production. Steve just wanted to program the tracks and play synth and Jeff was going to be the singer. As it happened when we started to record some tracks it transpired that Steve sounded a bit like Dave and Jeff a bit like Mart. It’s not our fault. It was written in the stars above.

How did you discover them and what’s the attraction for you?
Enjoy the Silence. Saw that video on the Chart Show one Saturday morning and they were that band we'd been looking for. Anthemic music, intersting lyrics, great electronics, huge leads and a super cool image. Then you get that great period when you get to discover the back catalogue. Everything they had done was interesting and achievable with a little effort.

Other than the Basildon lads, who have been the biggest influences on you as musicians?
Sound wise we're fans of the heavier electronics like Nine Inch Nails, Nitzer Ebb, IAMX and The Prodigy. But if you check out lead singer Steve's CD collection it hasn’t changed in 30 years. Japan, David Sylvian, Adam Ant, U2, A-Ha, R&B and funk! (Yes Candy by CAMEO is one of his all-time favourite tracks)

What’s yr band history? Where have you played, who with etc?
Far too many places to mention really as we've been performing for over 20 years. We do sometimes team up with other Tribute Acts, these have included tributes to The Cure, Gary Numan, Erasure, Joy Division and Marilyn Manson to name a few…

What was yr debut gig?
As a band, it was a place called The Foundry in Birmingham which was an unofficial convention by our amazing friend Lisa. To say we were nervous would be an understatement as none of us were performers and we’d only just started using synths and programming. As BC, I’m thinking we played a place in Soho (a big jazz club from back in the day where we believe The Beatles had played in the 60s). Can’t recall the name but it was a tiny little venue and we had to input to their sound system by going with an RCA cable into the DJ’s turntable setup. There was also some ‘tension’ when we were not paid what we’d been promised after having driven 170 miles in a van we’d had to hire to move the gear.

What was yr best gig?
Couldn’t name a best gig. We’re incredibly lucky in the fact that wherever we turn up people are just awesome.

What was yr worst gig?
Birkenhead. Clearly hadn’t been promoted, we were approached by staff whilst performing to play “the famous ones” about 5 songs in as the owner wasn’t ”happy”. Then a couple of songs further in the pi**ed up owner at the front of the stage started effing and blinding that he was going to ‘shut it down’ if essentially we didn’t drop the set and play Just Can’t Get Enough for the remaining hour. Fair to say we won't be returning there.

What would be yr ideal gig?
Outdoors. We’ve never performed a festival but it would have been nice to do.

Top five Depeche Mode songs to play out?
Walking in My Shoes
Stripped
Never let Me Down Again
Rush
Enjoy the Silence

What’s next for you?

Who knows? Music has changed and arguably not for the better. When we began we tought ourselves how to play, how to program, how to perform…all in an arena where many people didn’t appreciate tribute bands and the work that went into doing a single track. Today those detractors have been proven kinda right. You don’t need to spend two months getting a great backing track from scratch with the tech available. Just take the vocal of the original recording and use the artists original recording as backing.

Why should folk come to McChuills when yr playing?
We're the definitive tribute to Depeche Mode and you won't just get the classics, we play tracks that Depeche Mode either never (or very rarely) play live. It will be two hours of Depeche Mode Heaven…

Black Celebration play McChuills on Friday November 29th. Tickets are available in the comments via Ticketsource.

Celtic FC are out in Paisley to play St Mirren FC today, but here in Glasgow the weather is absolutely stinking. Seriously, how long has it been raining like this? We must be getting close to one of those “hilarious” videos of some wacky funster kayaking down Byres Road at this rate…

Aaanyway, we’ve got the game on the big screens, so why don’t ye jump doon, see ye pals and have some tasty refreshments? It’s a rotten day and yr probably not going to be doing much else with it, so be productive and come to the pub! Our own DJ Nicky will be spinning the tunes after it as well. What’s not to like?

Come on doon, you know it makes sense.

✊🏻🏴‍☠️💚

Sadly this week we couldn’t get an appointment with our new Super Duper 3-0 Predictor*, as they’ve been so successful this season so far, everyone wants to see them. Worry not, they’ll definitely be back next week for that home game against Rangers FC, promise.

In the meantime, we just went to this clanky auld machine down the Barras and fired in ten bob, just to have something to do. 🤷🏻‍♂️🔮

*we forgot to ask Auld Nick

Tonight we’re buzzing to welcome back the awesome Chemical Imbalance for another night of underground techno, house and more.

This time residents Harrison (THR333), Juan Maretune (Lets Go Back) and Basil (LGB) will be joined by special guests Lovell (Expressions Dance Cafe) and Lemmiwinks and much like the last few parties they’ve thrown here, this one is going to be mega. Guaranteed.

It all kicks off at 8 bells and entry is free. Come on doon, you know it makes sense.

The weekend starts at McChuills…

✊🏻🏴‍☠️💚

We also had a wee chat with the bold Blair R Basil earlier and got another top ten, this time it’s his favourite remixes of all time.
Enjoy.

Bryan Ferry: Don’t Stop The Dance (Todd Terje remix)
(The Vinyl Factory)
Todd Terje is great at what he does with certain tracks like this, really does make sure you don't stop the dance.

Jkriv And The Disco Machine: Make It Acid (Idjut Boys mix)
(File Under Disco)
I’ve always been a fan of Idjut Boys, but this one of their edits has stood out for me more than most and is one I play in sets a lot.

Bahia Black: Capitão Do Asfalto (David Holmes Exploding Plastic Inevitable Mix)
(Axiom Records)
11 minutes of pure brilliance and one of my favourite remixes of all time…

Chicken Lips: D.R.O.M.P (Emperor Machine Remix)
(Southern Fried Records)
I first heard this on an Uncle Ru set on SoundCloud, but apart from this one the emperor machine has lots of other edits that I use.

Rising High Collective: Fever Called Love (Hardfloor remix)
(Rising High Records)
A Hardfloor remix. There’s nothing more needs to be said about them, they smash it every time.

LCD Soundsystem: Get Innocuous (Soulwax Remix)
(DFA Records)
As much as I love LCD Soundsystem, this remix just seems to edge the original in my opinion

Creedence Clearwater Revival: Grapevine
(The Reflex Revision)
(Reflex self-released) I've chosen this remix because not often you think that CCR could be dropped in a club environment, this one helps you do that with adding more to the original…

N.O.I.A.: The Rule To Survive (Prins Thomas Diskomiks)
(N.O.I.A Records)
I came across this one by listening to a mix from Palms Trax and it’s just one of those tracks that I instantly liked once I heard it…

Deutsch Amerikanisches Freundschaftsfest (DAF): Der Mussolini (Giorgio Moroder & Denis Naidanow Remix)
(Grönland Records)
This one reminds me of none other than the Gaffer himself Nicholas Stewart and one he plays frequently. In fact even his own son had to ask him what it was! 😂

PBR Streetgang: Everything Changes (Tuff City Kids Acid Mix)
(Skint Records)
I came across this remix a few years back and knew it would work well in sets I play. And it does!

Chemical Imbalance is at McChuills on Saturday August 23rd from 8pm. Entry is free!

Another band we’ll never tire of booking here is this mob. Absolute Weller are hands down the best tribute to the Modfather himself, from his early days with The Jam through The Style Council and into his extensive solo career that is still firing on all cylinders to this day.

One of the best things about Paul Weller gigs is you never know what he’s going to play on the night. He can get away with that though, because he’s Weller, eh? If you want hits, more hits and maybe even some more hits though, you want to see Absolute Weller. There might be some rare cuts chucked in there, but on the whole, it’s pretty much every banger you want to hear, perfectly cranked out one after another.

They sell out every show for us, so don’t sleep on these, eh? Come on doon, you know it makes sense.

Absolute Weller play McChuills on Friday October 18th. Tickets are available in the comments via Skiddle.

22/08/2024

We’re absolutely buzzing to announce that The Pogue Traders, one of our favourite bands to ever play McChuills, are coming back again in November. We’ve actually lost count of how many times we’ve booked them over the years, but if you’ve ever been to one of their shows, you’ll know why.

The Brighton lads don’t just do Pogues covers, they embody everything that was (and still is) great about the band, with the attitude, the humour, the raucous singalongs and the ability to whip up absolute mayhem right from the off. Seriously, Pogue Trader gigs are everything you want live music to be like. Then you add in the extra vibes that only the back arch in McChuills brings and…Ooft. 😍

Like always, this will sell out sharpish, so don’t hang about. Get sorted and get down on the 30th November for what will be the party of the year. Guaranteed.

✊🏻🏴‍☠️💚

The Pogue Traders play McChuills on Saturday November 30th. Tickets available in the comments!

18/08/2024

It’s another Sunday matchday in McChuills here with Celtic back playing Hibernian again for the second week in a row, this time in the Premier Sports (League) Cup second round. The game is at Celtic Park, but we’ve got it on the screens in here if you don’t have a ticket or even if you cba going because yr a bit burst from last night. We’re not going to judge you.

As ever, our beloved founder and all-round legend DJ Nicky is on tune duty before and after the game and our lovely staff will be firing out the refreshments with a smile on their face, even if they’re a bit tired as well. Because they are professionals.

Oh aye, and from 7 we have THR333, our weekly Sunday club night in the bar. As always, resident DJs Bosco (Let’s Go Back), Hanz (Chemical Imbalance/LGB) and Harrison (Chemical Imbalance) are going to be playing anything and everything, from the latest cutting-edge club bangers to vintage floor-fillers of any and every genre. If it’s great and moves a dancefloor, it’s on the list.

So come on doon. Stick around. Monday is ages away. Honest.

✊🏻🏴‍☠️💚

Our new Super-Duper Fitba Predictor has been doing quite well with telling the future recently, so we had to go and consult the Mystic Mod himself* and see what the big spooky bassa had to say about the game today…

🔮🔮🔮
“Being a bit predictable but I’m going again for 3-0. Again it should be a pretty comfortable game. Scorers? Idah for a start. Look out for the celebration at the end as if we’ve won the World Cup too. Ahem.”
🔮🔮🔮

*We asked Auld Nick. Shocker, eh? 😬

McChuills Artist Profile: KEVIN MCGUIRE

Tonight in the venue we have something pretty special. One of the rising stars of the UK Country scene, Glasgow’s own Kevin McGuire has long moved onto booking much bigger venues than McChuills, so we’re buzzing to have him do his thing in the back arch tonight.

It sold out in minutes the day we put the tickets up, but we still wanted to have a wee chat with the bold Kevin, as there’s a lot to talk about, from playing C2C to working with folk like Rod Stewart and George Bowie and more besides…enjoy.

✊🏻🏴‍☠️💚

What can folk expect from yr McChuills set?
I wanted to put on something special, live and intimate, different to what people normally get at my big headliners. One or exclusive first performances of new songs but, as always, big energy and lots of line dancing!

Who have been the biggest influences on you as musicians?
The people I surround myself with mostly. I was brought up into a musical family - my big sister is a musical theatre actress in the West End right now - so we always used to perform together at the family parties. We’ve spurred each other on at every single point of our very different, and very difficult journeys over the years. My dad got me into drums and guitar (and great music), and obviously my manager John McLaughlin - he worked so hard from nothing to carve the most incredible career in music.

In terms of my sound - Gary LeVox (lead singer of my favourite band Rascal Flatts) is probably my strongest vocal and country influence. From a really young age, even at school, all I wanted to listen to were the likes of Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley etc. As the years have gone by I like to take influence from every band I like, not just country (I think I’ve seen The 1975 nine times now, for example) and make it my own.

What’s yr story? Where have you played, who with etc?
Been gigging for a long time. Fortunate enough to perform at massively well-known venues such as the OVO Hydro as part of Rod Stewart’s tour at the end of 2022), the O2 Academy Glasgow etc, as well as the biggest country music festivals like Country 2 Country both the Hydro in Glasgow and O2 Arena London. This Spring I was proud to perform our national anthem trackside for the official Scottish Grand National which was a huge honour. Several festivals over the last 12 months with George Bowie, performing our single ‘Wagon Wheel’, including the Glasgow Christmas light switch on at George Square.

What was yr debut gig?
I can’t even remember the name of the place but I’m sure I’ve still got the gig ticket somewhere. Some place on Sauchiehall street a fair few years ago! I did, however, perform right here in McChuills about 9-10 years ago, so it’s special to be back.

What was yr best gig?
Without a doubt my full band headliner at The Classic Grand at the end of April. To sell out a venue of that size as a country artist here in Glasgow is something I’ve dreamt of since I was a kid. I’ve been lucky enough to have so many incredible times on stage - but that was the best!

What was yr worst gig?
It was a festival that required a lot of travelling. When we got there it was a lot more run down than we thought. A lot of broken promises. I can’t say any more for obvious reasons on names or locations, but from that day it probably fuelled the fire to what I’ve achieved since. 🙂

What would be yr ideal gig?
Apart from McChuills tonight? Playing my own headliner at the Barrowland Ballroom Glasgow or The Hydro would be the stuff of dreams. Mix in with that a performance at The Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman in Nashville.

What’s next for you?
I’ve just announced my biggest headline yet. I’ll be headlining at Saint Luke's & The Winged Ox on February 7th. The next couple of months I’ll be releasing a couple of new tunes, one set to be another big collaboration - so please watch out for that! I’m certain some tour dates will follow later in the year, also.

Why should folk come to McChuills when yr playing?
Coz they’ve bought a ticket - it’s sold out! 🙂

Kevin McGuire plays McChuills tonight. Doors 8pm and yes, it’s sold out.

16/08/2024

Tonight in the bar, we have one of our own on the decks. When he’s not off selling ouf headline tours around Europe and smashing f**k out of Glastonbury Festivals as the frontman of the most-excellent VLURE, the bold Hamish aka .ninety7 does the odd shift for us here in McChuills. Which is nice.

At 8 bells the night though, he’s back in the pub to play a load of tunes by other people. Expect “trance classi # # # and more”. It’ll be mega, anyway.

Come on doon. The weekend starts in McChuills.

✊🏻🏴‍☠️💚

Photos from McChuills's post 15/08/2024

This Saturday night in the bar we are buzzing to have another not only have the bold Robert Kelly DJing for us again, but he’s joined by the amazing Neil Macinnes too. Neil was absolutely sensational the other week when he finished off Digging With Divine! to allow Andrew to go play at Belle and Sebastian’s SWG3 party, so having him back so soon, especially especially playing with Robert is a definite winner.

It all kicks off at 8pm, so come on doon and hear two of the best. You know it makes sense.

✊🏻🏴‍☠️💚

Obviously we didn’t miss the opportunity to have a wee chat with Big Robert about music too. This time he’s giving us some tracks that you might be hearing on Saturday night. Enjoy.

“Selecting from a shared four-hour set can be a bit like choosing your favourite children, but I hope you come on down and hopefully enjoy my slightly eclectic selections. See you there!

The Jackson 5: I Want You Back (DJ Z-Trip remix)
An interesting version on Beatrice Ardisson’s La Musique de Paris derniere 8 compilation. It features some original studio outtakes which opens right up for a different listen.

Spanky Wilson: Waiting for your Touch
Funked-up goodness. A strong woman’s longing encapsulated in three and a bit minutes.

Brooklyn Funk Essentials: Wendell’s Wedding This lot are never anything less than versatile and eclectic, with this cracker right here being a perfect example.

John Lee Ho**er: Boogie Chillun
No explanation required from the blues maestro.

Chilly: For Your Love (Frankfurt Mix)
Smooth electro-styled version of the Spencer Davis Group classic.

PM Watson: Don’t Hold Me Down.
If you like your Nick Waterhouse, you’ll love this.

Wilson Pickett: Ninety Nine and One Half
A rediscovered funk masterpiece.

JOE BATAAN: Gypsy Woman
Latino excellence and mod classic.

The Martinis: Bullseye
Hammond organ groover.

Andy Cooper: Let the Tiger Out
A little left field for me, but well worth a play. Funky rap chops.

Robert Kelly play’s McChuills with Neil Mcinnes on Saturday August 17th from 8pm. Entry is free!

14/08/2024

This Friday night we have the mighty Combat Rock - The Ultimate Clash Tribute making a welcome return to McChuills. We’ve been booking the lads for longer than a lot of our regulars have been alive and they’re still every bit as immense as they were back in the day. Seriously, when it comes to conjuring the sound, the attitude and the visceral intensity of The Clash live, you won’t get any closer than they get.

There’s only a few tickets left, so if yr up for it (and you should be), get yr finger oot and get sorted asap. Link in da comments.

✊🏻🏴‍☠️💚

We also made sure to have a wee chat with the lads here about all things Clash and music in general. Enjoy.

What can folk expect from yr McChuills set?
Folk can expect two sets of absolute classic Clash songs, all killer, no filler.

How did the band come about?
Back in 1996, we had a band called Walters Special, playing punk/ska/new wave covers and one night at McSorleys a guy said that we were very good at Clash songs, so we took it from there.

Why The Clash? What’s the appeal for you?
The Clash are my (Mark-singer)all time favourite band, for me they epitomise everything that a band should be.

Other than The Clash, whether artists have been the biggest influences on you as musicians?
Stiff Little Fingers, The Specials, Buddy Holly and everything early rock n roll, S*x Pistols, Rockabilly, The Stranglers (Official).......too many to mention.

Tell us a bit about the band’s history. Where have you played, who with etc?
Ooft....Barrowland Ballroom Glasgow, Barras, THE LIQUID ROOMS (Official), Fat Sams Dundee with SLF, SWG3 with The Skids and Big Country, Belfast with Buzzcocks, O2 Academy Glasgow with The Damned, Rebellion Punk Music Festival, King Tut's Wah Wah Hut every Dec 22nd since 2003, McChuills so many times, Krakatoa Aberdeen, Beat Generator Live ! Dundee, Bellfield Kilmarnock, again, too many to mention.

What was yr debut gig?
1996 McSorleys, Glasgow

What would you say yr best gig has been?
St Patrick's at McChuills a few years back! We did a pre SLF gig and we had to fight our way through the packed venue to load our gear in lol. Place was bouncing and the punters left very happy.

What was yr worst gig?
A pub in Hamilton around 2010, no one there and our drummer at the time turned up with an electronic kit.......was also his last gig.

What would be yr ideal gig?
Anywhere with a packed, diverse audience, a great sound system and engineer and friendly staff .

Where else can folk catch you?
At the moment, myself and Mick travel extensively for work so we struggle to get bookings as frequently as we once did, plus a lot of our go to venues have now closed unfortunately also.

What do you think sets you apart from other bands doing similar things?
We put the emphasis on the music and try to recreate the studio sound of The Clash live.

Top 5 Clash songs to play out?
White Man in Hammersmith....my all time favourite song.
Complete Control
Safe European Home
Straight to Hell
London Calling

Why should folk come to McChuills when yr playing?
To mix with folk who have similar musical taste and have a real good time in a safe environment.

Combat Rock play McChuills on Friday August 16th. Last few tickets are on sale now in the comments…
