I was recently interviewed about start-up culture and my unique approach to building companies in a portfolio for a column in The Herald.
It's been a very interesting landscape for the past 15 months, and having experienced a better than expected performance from our companies, we are excited about what the next 15 months will bring.
This year has seen us invest in two companies and build/support a roster of 60 brilliant clients on the agency side. We have found our footing in a number of heavily regulated sectors as well as our ongoing SME projects. I am very positive about the future of the Scottish business landscape.
It's good coming home and learning you won a wee cheeky tender 🤣 Maybe it's because they are harder to win than private work.
You can close large scale software over a can of Pepsi Max and a chat, but tendering is its own animal.
Proposal process on steroids. Rewarding though.

Vive la Revolution: Spreadsheets to Web Apps
We all love a spreadsheet, for many business owners, it's the go-to.
Having data and structure in front of you helps break information down. Regardless of if you are tracking staff, creating reports, or scheduling work; a good old spreadsheet does the job.
Sadly they are also a few downsides to using them in business:
1. A single wrong character or value can break a calculation
2. Staff members can steal or lift your intellectual property
3. All the logic is exposed and can also be lifted or broken
4. It leads to more mistakes and places importance on that sheet remaining correct.
This is why we build software, as it combats all of those issues and more
1. Machines don't make mistakes, they are told what to calculate and they do it perfectly; forever
2. Staff can't steal what they don't have access to (the code itself)
3. The logic is not exposed, no one but you and the developer knows how it works out its numbers or results

On pancake Tuesday, apart from the delicious, I always think about the recipe.
Someone asked me last week what our logo design process was, then after I let them see some of the inner workings, suggested we should share it. I've always found the best way to design a logo is to sketch through the examples and hit on an idea that might be suitable, before diving into illustrator.
This is a recent logo we created for Impart Engine, which is focused on the eLearning space.
The little owl is Atticus. Brownie points if you can tell me the origin of that name in literature.
