Chou Tien Chen is a world-class badminton player from Taiwan, representing Chinese Taipei. He was a silver medalist at the 2018 Asian Games and winner of men’s singles in the Indonesia Open 2019.
"I have experienced many different kinds of movement methods. The Gyrotonic Method holds a very unique place in my training. Not only does it broaden my horizons on the court, it also helps me to understand my own body better. In particular, I’ve learned how to 'spiral,' which is essential in badminton playing."
What we find the most beautiful about our community are the unique stories of how master trainers, trainers and everyday movers first discovered the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®. To honor that, we've started a new mini-series to highlight these amazing stories from people in our Gyrotonic community. Stay tuned as we feature more stories. ✨
What was your first experience with the Gyrotonic and/or Gyrokinesis Methods?

Fabrice now has a page. Please follow him (like his page) as I won't be posting here for much longer.
How cool does Fabrice Maufrais Studio look. See you there from tomorrow onwards.
So this happened today. A big shout out to Roddy and Graham from Greenmove, they were fantastic
We're having a very busy weekend moving everything to Fabrice's studio. We want to make sure that you know where to come from Monday onwards.
Tuesday's thoughts are with all the fabulous master trainers we've been fortunate enough to have learnt from over the years. There's such a wealth of knowledge and experience in the GYROTONIC community and a real generosity of spirit. Every course has opened our minds and bodies. We're truly grateful.
A little more nostalgia 😍
In 2008 we moved down the road to 16 Newton Place where we remained for 10 years. During this time some of our instructors got married, had Gyro babies, a couple of clients met at one of our Open evenings and subsequently got engaged, we managed a few Christmas nights out - mostly in May but above all we made sure our clients had fun while exercising. Happy times!
With only 1 week to go I'm sharing more memories, hope you don't mind!
From Craigie Hall we moved to the first of our Newton Place locations - the basement of no 9 and then 18 months later a move up to the first floor and the acquisition of a second Pulley Tower and the Jumping Stretch Board. Thanks to Anne Stephen and Lorna Pickford for being excellent 'Gyrotonic models'.
Who remembers coming to Gyrotonic sessions at the fabulous Craigie Hall?
Built in 1872 to a design by John Honeyman and subsequently reworked in part by John Keppie in 1892 it was further reworked by Charles Rennie Mackintosh(CRM) in 1897.
How lucky were we to have worked in this stunning building!
With only a couple of weeks left until Fabrice Maufrais Studio takes over I thought it would be fun to look back over the past 20 years of Penny Withers Studio. We started out in 2001 at Scottish Ballet when it was in West Princes Street and this was the article in the Herald that initially publicised the benefits of the system.
Feeling a bit down after all this rain? I have an 11.15am slot available on Wednesday 11th August if anyone would like it. Guaranteed to make you feel uplifted!
Spent a lovely afternoon with the team from Fabrice Maufrais Studio 😊
A sneaky peak at Fabrice Maufrais Studio. Lot's of painting going on so it'll be bright and fresh for September.
I have an 11.15am slot available tomorrow -Tuesday 3rd if anyone would like it.
Our lovely client Dougie looking very impressive this week during his session with Katie. Great work guys 👏👏
More from Tom Daley
How do you recover from your intense training sessions?
“I do a Gyrotonic session [a training method that mixes yoga, dance, gymnastics, swimming and t’ai chi] twice a week. Even on my days off, I like to do active recovery, so something that’s going to improve my flexibility and mobility, to allow me to dive better.
Tom Daley on his Olympic hopes, recovery routine and how he’s become a ‘double stitcher’ in lockdown Liz Connor speaks to the diving champ about the road to Tokyo, and how knitting and yoga are helping him to switch off from the pressure.
Great that the Gyrotonic system is getting more recognition at last.
Is Gyrotonic Method the best-kept secret among Tokyo Olympians? Hong Kong’s Olympic karate hope Grace Lau, tennis player Andy Murray, diver Tom Daley, Tiger Woods and singer Lady Gaga have used the Gyrotonic Method.
The five-time European champion has taken up mindfulness, yoga and gyrotonics in a bid to prolong his career, which has been extended by at least 12 months by the coronavirus pandemic.
The triumph and trauma of Daley's quest for gold The 'baby' of Beijing has become a father, a husband and an LGBTQ+ spokesperson. Tom Daley has perhaps one final shot at Olympic gold.
We are so pleased to share our exciting news. We're about to begin a new chapter.
From September 6th Fabrice Maufrais the director of Fabrice Maufrais Studio will be taking over the ownership of Penny Withers Studio. We will be moving to a lovely Westend venue that already houses a ballet school and Fabrice is delighted that there will be a Gyrotonic studio on site as well.
3 years ago we moved from number 16 to our lovely new home at number 14.
So important to understand
Fantastic image posted by showing just how many structures are related to the pelvic floor. Previously (& sometimes still now) you may have been advised to just squeeze and release the pelvic floor but this isn’t enough alone to truly condition the pelvic floor.
It is also common find some of these structures need releasing as well as conditioning which is where whole body movement is so beneficial.
REPOST with It's amazing to think that all of these structures are related fascially to the pelvic floor! 🕸
When looking at the hammock / web like structure of the pelvic floor and all of the surrounding structures, it gives us some insight into why ‘just lifting and holding your pelvic floor’ wouldn't be sufficient in conditioning it.
Simply engaging and relaxing a muscle isn’t the approach we take when we want to condition any other part of our body...
think lower back pain...
we don't just tighten the lower back muscles and expect that it will get stronger.
We seek out a lower back rehab programme and exercises (like Pilates) to address the issues.
The pelvic floor and it fascia is an incredible structure designed for support, flexibility, control and balance.
Such a structure requires mindful conditioning - the ‘squeeze and hold’ approach is not going to be enough to support the needs of your pelvic floor and to resolve all of your pelvic health issues.
What a lovely, busy 1st day back. It's so nice to have people walking down the stairs again. 🙂
Sending best wishes to everyone else who's business re-opens tomorrow. We're very excited to get back to work and are really looking forward to seeing all our clients.
There are currently roadworks at Charing Cross that may effect your travel to the studio. Maybe add a little extra time for your journey.....
Traffic Scotland > Mini Site Event Emergency roadworks has been implemented on the eastbound M8 Junctions 16 to Junction 17 in Glasgow to undertake emergency maintenance to the Woodside Viaduct structure.
1 more week until we re-open. So looking forward to being back in the studio 🙂
We are currently taking bookings for 26th April onwards. Please get in touch if you'd like to make an appointment.
So looking forward to seeing all our fabulous clients again.
