Mean City Roller Derby
Glasgow's meanest and first all gender roller derby league.
Have you heard? :)
Big thanks to TrySkating for donating some pads for our new skaters to loan! TrySkating sessions 10:30-12:30 Sundays at the ARC
Who’s all ready for another Sunday?!
We are and we can’t wait to get our skates on tomorrow!
It’s time for another meet the meanie! This time it’s Ceezus!
I’ve been skating in some form or another pretty much my whole life. I grew up ice skating on frozen ponds in Northern BC. True to my weirdo self, I would occasionally rollerblade the 4 miles to college. I started on quads for derby 10 years ago.
I think I discovered derby from the movie Whip It, but I’m not too sure. I eventually sent an overconfident email to my first league Eves of Destruction Roller Derby where I said “I will be awesome.”
My advice for anyone thinking of joining/rejoining is to just do the thing! It’s awesome and you meet awesome people.
It’s time for another meet the Meanie!
Hey I’m Jo (the one in white), aka Rabbit as I look like a rabbit caught in headlights when I’m on track and generally just in life.
I’ve been playing derby since August/September 2022 with no prior skating skills.
I met a ref (thanks Taz) who gave me details of Mean City and I looked into went to a training session and just fell in love with the sport.
For anyone wanting to try it out,
reach out to your local team, show up.
I love the respect between the teams every single person I’ve come across is always rooting for each other to progress and become better.
I tell everyone that will listen
IT IS THE BESTEST FUN!
Meet the Meanies!
Today it’s (Gerry) 5 Bellies...
I’ve been skating for around 6 years. My eldest kids really like roller skating and joined the junior roller derby team at RollerStop. I had my arm twisted to try it out and joined Mean City about a year before the pandemic. I’m not the smallest skater, and so I chose the derby name ‘5 Bellies’! I love skating with Mean City and part of the bigger derby community. My eldest children Daniel and Eilidh now play with Mean City too which is great fun.

How long have you been skating?
I went to a fresh meat course down with the Cambridge Rollerbillies then joined Bairn City in 2019. Been with Mean City now for about 2 years.
How did you get involved with roller derby?
My friend was really enthusiastic about wanting to try roller derby so I went along with them to a game. It was completely confusing! But very energetic and fun. It took me a while to get to skate regularly but I got there in the end 😁
What advice do you have for anyone who wants to get involved with roller derby?
Just show up! It's really that simple. Everyone I've met has been really awesome and welcoming. I was a lone 'new skater' at Bairns for a few months but the team really put in the effort to make me feel welcome, and was made equally welcome when starting to guest at Mean City. You also don't need some fitness plan before you can start! When I joined Bairns I did no exercise at all so really started from complete scratch - it's all good.
Meet the Meanies!
Kozza will be coaching the new skater intake! Let's get to know her...
How long have you been skating?
I have been skating since round about 2018/2019
How did you get involved with roller derby?
I got involved after my mum asked if I wanted to try a new sport she had seen on facebook
What advice do you have for anyone who wants to get involved with roller derby?
Honestly give it try, I didn’t want to at first and now I have so many new friends all over the world and have the opportunity to coach a wonderful team.

Hello Derbyverse,
Mean City has existed as a league since 2012. Like many leagues after the last couple of years, we're facing some challenging times. Although we have a decent membership, and foundation to be built upon, we have a shortage of experienced skaters and coaches.
We know there are currently people local to our league that are currently in the derby wilderness. Covid in particular caused a lot of people to drift away. Others have more personal or historical reasons for leaving leagues, or the sport in general.
We would like to offer a fresh start to anyone out there who has maybe been pondering making a return to derby in some capacity. Maybe your league closed and you didn't find somewhere else immediately. Maybe you were an MCRD member in the past and left for any of a thousand reasons, but wonder now and then what might have been. Or, maybe your own skating days are behind you and you are keen to help off skates with coaching or admin and be part of a league again.
This is the perfect time for your derby comeback.
Mean City is a gender inclusive league which accepts members age 16+. Our training includes members eligible for juniors through to adult OTA, with everyone receiving the same time and attention. There is a place for everyone, and we want to give all those who want to play derby somewhere they can work to raise their game, and the game of those they train with.
Drop us a message through the page and we can talk about getting you back in the game!
Stay Mean
