What is the the importance of SCoPEd?

Who better to answer that than one of our current students:

"The SCoPEd Framework (The Scope of Practice and Education Framework) has been developed by accrediting bodies for counselling and psychotherapy, and is planed to be finalised in 2028. The length, depth, and practical experience that the Level 6 qualification offers, puts students of ECPT @ Peel at an advantage to working their way towards accreditation within this framework. The requirement to learn from your own therapist during training really does give trainees the knowledge and experience required to support clients on their journey."

What is Transactional Analysis?

Transactional Analysis or TA for short is a model of personality, communication and behaviour. Developed by Dr Eric Berne in the 60s, TA is a psychological approach used widely in clinical settings, education and industry.

YES. This is the Ellesmere Counselling & Psychotherapy Training in Newcastle at PEEL, Gosforth and as such is UKCP accredited.

"Is it possible to work and still do the course?"

YES. Most of our students hold down full time employment whilst doing the diploma. As we train 1 weekend per month, Saturday & Sunday, over 10 academic months September - June our students reportedly find the time in between allows for reading, reflection and bedding down the theory.

During our open evening, we had a number of FAQ. Here's some with answers from my perspective!

What's it like to be a psychotherapist?

Rise early and the feeding begins!

Feed the cat, feed the dog, feed the horse. Make coffee, stretch, boil an egg. Prepare for what I term is my ‘Daily Dose.’

This is a great acronym I use with clients.

D = dopamine
O = oxytocin
S = serotonin
E = endorphins

Natural feel-good chemicals and one way to get them all is by simply setting yourself a small task and doing it. Saying hi to someone on the street. Getting outside and taking a walk. Food for the mind body and soul. So I, usually, pull on some jodhpurs and walk the dog or quickly ride the horse.

As the founder of PEEL Psychological Consultancy, a private counselling, psychotherapy and training provider, no two workdays are the same and sure enough on my return, a look at the diary confirms, I will be seeing clients, taking practitioners for supervision, speaking with students about course work, attending to admin and preparing next month’s teaching plan. I shower, dress and head for the door.

Walking into PEEL, after so many years in this role never fails to lift my heart. Being a psychotherapist can be extremely challenging. We are often engaged in many different roles, work in isolation and see clients with increasingly complex issues.

This is not a job where you can down tools over a glass of wine with friends and off load about the day. We are the keepers of secrets, the holders of despair, the defenders of love. We get tired, feel helpless, scared, aroused, excited and hopefully always curious.

This is a role in which we experience the privilege and honour of sitting with people from all walks of life, in their most challenging times and share their journey. When things go well, we see clients confront crisis and grow, face challenge and develop insight, turn scare into courage and shift from hate to love. And of course, when things don’t pan out as we hoped, we learn to tolerate our discomfort. And yet remain ever curious, ever hopeful.

So after the day is done, once back, I change and take a moment to reflect on the day, let myself know how lucky I am to be doing something I love before returning to life and the feeding begins!
