Mental Hygiene Through the Niyamas 🧠
Have you ever wondered how ancient yoga practices can boost your modern life? The Niyamas, rooted in age-old wisdom, offer a roadmap to balancing your mental and physical health.
In yoga, you might have heard people talk about “living the Niyamas". This is not just about staying fit and physically healthy; it’s also about forming positive habits that enhance your life and breaking free from those that hold you back.
An effective way to do this is through the Niyama Saucha (Cleansing).
Pronounced ‘shouch’, it’s a holistic approach to wellness, combining physical hygiene with mental clarity. Imagine extending your daily cleaning routine to include your thoughts and feelings.
How do you practice Saucha?
You're likely already taking care of your physical hygiene – think showers and clean homes. But what about your mental environment? Mental hygiene, though less talked about, is crucial. It involves practices like meditation, mindfulness, or simply enjoying a peaceful moment in nature to clear your mind. Using positive affirmations can help fight off negative thoughts, while chants and mantras can be effective in calming your mind.
Remember, mental health is like physical health; it requires regular attention. Just a few dedicated minutes each day for your mental health can make a huge difference.
What do you do to keep your mind clean and healthy?

Lung Health 🫁 it is of vital importance that we consistently nourish and protect our lungs. Whether it’s due to viruses, environmental pollution (etc) we must keep this precious organ nourished, energetically and physically.
These are just some of many plant allies that are excellent for lung health and below are even more! 🌬
💚OSHA. *endangered, pls use *very* mindfully or only from organic farms* Osha supports the thinning + expelling of mucus, very appropriate for dry, hacking coughs. It increases oxygenation in the lungs, acts as a diaphoretic, which causes sweating + helps to break a fever.
💚REISHI. Its powerful effects have been documented in ancient scripts + in modern scientific articles for its longevity properties, particularly known to strengthen the respiratory and immune system.
💚MULLEIN. A remedy for dry, irritated lung conditions or a dry, raspy throat. The leaf encourages secretions in dry mucus membranes.
💚ELECAMPANE. An undiscovered adaptogen (quote me on this!) can be used as a respiratory tonic + to speed up the recovery for lingering infections. It‘s specific for respiratory conditions w excessive bronchial secretions, like bronchitis, + for irritation of the trachea, bronchi that results in persistent, irritable coughing.
💚CORDYCEPS. User for centuries as a tonic to soothe the lungs for the treatment of respiratory diseases, and studied to relief severe acute respiratory syndrome.
💚 ASTRAGALUS. In TCM, the lungs + the colon make up the majority of the immune system, hence its immune enhancing properties. Astragalus works by building up the Wei Qi (immune defenses) and is great for colds, the flu, any difficulty breathing (such as asthma)
💚NETTLE. A nutrient dense plant used for centuries to help with hay fever, asthma + lung congestion.

GET RID OF FOOT PAIN
⠀
[NATURAL TREATMENT WITH GRANDMA’S RECIPE]
⠀
It may sound strange, but cabbage leaves can be used to relieve joint pain, arthritis, inflammation or swelling in your feet, ankles and hands. They work by drawing out excess fluid!
⠀
Cabbage belongs to the family of cruciferous vegetables that are widely known for their abundance in health benefits. This leafy vegetable is an excellent source of vitamins C, K, B1, B2 & B6 and a very good source of dietary fiber, folate, copper, potassium and manganese. In addition, cabbage is also rich in iron, choline, magnesium, pantothenic acid, niacin, protein, phosphorus and calcium.
⠀
Alternative medicine has used cabbage, more particularly its leaves, in the treatment of various health ailments including strains, sprains, inflammations, swellings and ulcers. Owing to their powerful anti-inflammatory properties, cabbage leaves have also been used to relieve joint pain caused by arthritis or sports injuries. Even though the efficiency of this treatment has not been scientifically proven, cabbage leaves have been used for years as a cheap, natural remedy to treat joint pain and inflammation. Due to its being a completely natural way to relieve pain, many people who suffer from arthritis use it in order to cut down on medications.
⠀
Here’s how to use cabbage leaves to soothe pain:
Cool white or green cabbage leaves in the freezer until they are chilled but still pliable. Wrap them around your swollen feet and sit with your feet elevated for 30 minutes. Cabbage has great water absorption qualities and will draw out excess fluid in the feet.
⠀
Warning: It is rare to experience an allergy to cabbage, but if you have any swelling or itching to the skin where the cabbage poultice is place, remove the leaves immediately. Consult a health practitioner if the irritation continues or worsens.
