CSRD and Why it Matters 15/08/2024

2024 is a milestone year as it marks the first anniversary of CSRD reporting in the EU.

But what does this mean for you?

The Corporate Social Responsibility Directive, or CSRD for short, requires businesses across the EU to report on their sustainability with much more detail than before. Their supply chains' sustainability practices, and effect on climate change, are now required to be held in much higher regard.

These new regulations bear a lot of similarities to those of EcoVadis, as both require transparency and accountability from businesses. At Techbuyer, we are actually preparing to receive our updated EcoVadis rating in the next few weeks.

CSRD will play a crucial role in shaping the business landscape and creating a culture of sustainability.

Our Head Of Public Sector and Sustainability, Astrid, explains more in the article below, and explains why the CSRD is important for everyone.

Warehouse vs Office. ⚽

Last week, members of our Harrogate team took part in a match for the ages, finally settling the debate once and for all - who has the better football team: the office or the warehouse?

It was fantastic to see so many of our team come down for the game which saw the office take the win in a brilliant display of footballing talent.

A special shoutout to referee Tom's 'cards'. You may recognise them if you have purchased a server from us, they're our 3D printed CPU Covers. 🟡 🔴

3 years ago, we invested in our first 3D printer.

The idea of creating our own parts was an exciting one. We began to experiment and develop parts we needed in much larger quantities, such as CPU blanks.

The success of our initial parts creation lead to us expanding our 3D printing fleet, and the creation of our Additive Manufacturing Section (AMS).

Today, AMS provide a vast spectrum of capabilities required throughout the business. Ranging from R&D to engineering, prototyping to small-scale mass production.

9 machines, using 2 different printing technologies, working 20 hours a day. This output allows us to create around 450 CPU covers per week alongside all our other 3D printed parts.

We are extremely proud of what our AMS team has managed to achieve, and excited for what is to come.

Servers are built to last, but nothing lasts forever.

Even with a large amount of hot swappable parts, impressive longevity and brilliant reliability, if you are running a server for long enough then the time for change is inevitable.

You may also need to upgrade your data centre to meet new demand as your business grows.

No matter the reason for an update, the main concern remains: how do I minimise the downtime?

We explored tips, tricks, and best practices when it comes to data centre decommissioning in our article below.

🌍Inspiring the next generation of green innovators 🎓

Last week, members of our sustainability team had the privilege of leading a session at New College Pontefract's Green Employers Conference.

The session bridged the gap between technology and the environment and provided the students with an opportunity to get a closer look at what makes up the hardware we use every day.

This was a fantastic opportunity to educate students on the link between technology and the environment, and introduce them to the circular economy.

Our lesson was extremely well received, with one student saying "I hadn't really thought about the components before, and it goes to show how much can be reused".

One of the teachers also plans to use the practical element of the lesson in their class to help students further understand the circular economy.

Thank you to New College Pontefract for inviting us to your Green Careers Event, we are delighted to have had a positive impact on the students.

The Most Critical Material of All - Techerati 21/06/2024

Our head of Public Sector & Sustainability, Astrid, recently shared her thoughts with Techrati on a number of pressing issues that we are set to face on a global scale:

The skyrocketing price of gallium and effects on semiconductor manufacturing as a result of a China-USA technology trade war.

The unsustainable quantities of vital resources that are used to power data centres as a result of artificial intelligence.

What is WEEE and Why is it Important? 17/06/2024

Let’s talk about e-waste.

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, or WEEE for short, is the fastest growing domestic waste stream in the world with over 50 million tonnes produced per year. With an estimated 2 million tonnes of this discarded by the UK, the importance of this issue can not be overstated.

Read more about WEEE and how it is being dealt with by clicking the link below.

We are excited to working together and building even stronger connections!

It can be difficult to know the next step when it comes to old hardware.

When the time came to replace our old desktops, laptops, and general hardware, they ended up in the hands of our UK E-waste manager, Paul. Though these devices were no longer fit for our stock, Paul saw potential in them to serve a purpose and extend their lifespan a little further.

Paul got them data erased, cleaned them up, and decided to donate them to The ITSA Digital Trust (IT Schools Africa), a charity with the goal of providing IT hardware to schools in Africa.

We have worked with the ITSA for over 5 years now, but this is the first time we have donated our very own equipment. It is always a fantastic feeling to donate to an incredible cause, but it feels special to be providing devices that have been used by our team.

We can’t wait to see these desktops reach Zimbabwe and the positive impact they will have.

Great to have Harrogate and Knaresborough MP, Andrew Jones MP, in our Harrogate facility today to officially sign the ‘Repair and Reuse Declaration’ calling for the UK Government to improve legislation on product lifespan extension. ♻ 🔧

During Andrew’s visit, we took him for a guided tour of our facility to show him our operation and specifically how we keep IT equipment in use for longer and divert it from landfill.

As the UK is the second highest producer of electronic waste per capita in the world, it is vital that our legislation supports repair & reuse and helps to establish a circular economy.

With 57 million tonnes of e-waste generated globally each year and Critical Raw Materials in short supply, the establishment of a circular economy is essential for the future of our planet. 🌍

Data centres consume 1-2.4% of our global power consumption and produce as much CO2 as the aviation industry!

While data centres are of course a vital part of our society, we must find ways to make them more efficient.

Our in-house research team are currently conducting research to heighten our understanding on server performance and efficiency under different conditions.

This November, Techbuyer’s Research and Development Engineer, Dr. Kat Burdett presented our team’s findings on the impact of BIOS settings, server population and RAM configuration on device efficiency, to Aston University in Birmingham.

Find out more about this research and how we are using the findings to better serve our customers and create a more efficient data centre industry:
