Pipe Solutions Ltd
Solving thermal expansion, building movement, noise, vibration, air/dirt problems in pipes and plant
About Us
Established as a limited company in 2002, Pipe Solutions offers its clients the extensive collective experience of many decades within the building services industry. From our head office in Harrogate, Yorkshire, and regional office in Rochester, Kent, we provide high quality products and services for customers across the UK and Ireland. Our staff are our most important asset and we prid
Working with, H E Simm & Sons Ltd, Henco Industries N.V., and Abacus Consult Ltd., we have recently been able to review, design and supply a solution for accommodating the thermal expansion of the domestic water service pipework with Blocks A, B and D of the First Street, Manchester development.
This project provided an opportunity to showcase our ability to review for expansion the Henco Multilayer Pipe system and offer up a design solution for the accommodation of the expected expansion of the system using our Cleated Anchor Brackets designed for use with multi-layer pipes.
Other products supplied on this project include, fixed point pipe anchors, stainless steel corrugated over-braided hoses, axial bellows expansion joints, and pipe guides; all with WRAS approval where required.
Pipe expansion joints offer several advantages when used in steam turbines:
1. Thermal Expansion Compensation: Steam turbines operate at high temperatures, and the associated piping is subjected to significant thermal expansion and contraction. Expansion joints accommodate these movements by absorbing the thermal stresses, preventing damage to the piping system. They allow for axial, lateral, and angular movements, ensuring the integrity and reliability of the piping.
2. Vibration and Noise Reduction: Steam turbines generate vibrations and mechanical noise during operation. Expansion joints absorb and dampen these vibrations, reducing the transmission of noise and minimizing the potential for structural damage. This enhances the overall efficiency and performance of the turbine while ensuring a quieter working environment.
3. Flexibility and Misalignment Compensation: Expansion joints provide flexibility and allow for misalignment between the various components of the piping system. They can compensate for small offsets, angular deviations, and axial displacements that may occur due to thermal expansion, foundation settlements, or other factors. This flexibility helps avoid excessive stress on the piping and associated equipment, prolonging their service life.
4. Stress Relief and Fatigue Prevention: By absorbing thermal and mechanical stresses, expansion joints help relieve stress concentrations that can occur at fixed points or rigid connections in the piping system. This reduces the risk of fatigue failure and extends the lifespan of the system. It also minimizes the need for maintenance and repair work, resulting in cost savings over time.
5. Simplified Installation and Maintenance: Using expansion joints in a steam turbine system simplifies the installation process by eliminating the need for complex and rigid pipe routing. They allow for easier alignment and adjustment during installation, saving time and effort. Additionally, maintenance tasks such as inspections, repairs, or component replacements are more accessible and straightforward with expansion joints in place.
6. System Integrity and Safety: Expansion joints help maintain the overall integrity and safety of the steam turbine system. By accommodating thermal expansion and vibration, they prevent leakage, cracks, and other potential failures in the piping system. This ensures the continuous and reliable operation of the turbine, minimizing downtime and associated costs.
It's important to note that the specific advantages of expansion joints can vary depending on the design, material, and application requirements. Consulting with experts and adhering to manufacturer guidelines is crucial for selecting and installing the appropriate expansion joints in steam turbine systems.

We worked closely with our client in providing technical solutions to pipe expansion and plant vibration on this 'Our Town Hall' renovation project:
Old Town Hall – Albert Square, Manchester.
Main Contractor – Lendlease.
Mechanical Contractor – N G Bailey Ltd.
On this project, we provided engineering designs to solve problems due to:
Pipe Thermal Expansion – using natural flexibility and bellows expansion joints, pipe anchors and guides.
Noise and Vibration from Building Services Plant –using flexible connectors, spring mounts and spring hangers.
Over the decades, we have engineered many airports and supplied equipment to control pipe movement. 15 years ago, we were working on this BAA “Tomorrows T4” project. We recently came across these photos and thought we’d share:
Heathrow Airport T4 Check-In Extension – Heathrow, Middlesex.
Airport Authority - BAA Plc.
Consulting Engineer – Buro Happold.
Mechanical Contractor – Bailey Ltd.
On this project, we provided engineering designs to solve problems due to Pipe Thermal Expansion and imposed Structural Movement where LTHW and CHW pipes crossed the Building Movement Joints (BMJs). We utilised Gimbaled and Hinged bellows expansion joints, geometrically placed, to accommodate the multi-directional movements.
When you require help with your pipework and piping on today’s building, please don’t hesitate contact us.
