π€ Itβs a common issue for people on the spectrum; poor sleep and sleep issues. Itβs estimated that between 50 - 80% of people on the autism spectrum struggle to get enough sleep each night.
Experts say there are many factors, of which not all are understood, but one common one is the inability to βswitch the brain offβ.
Diane Keenanβs 11-year-old autistic daughter, Thalia, has tried everything; from music on or off, no screen time before bed, a dark or light room, consistent bedtime and waking, even using a body sock.
For little Thalia, what has worked is having a strict bedtime routine, which takes about 20 minutes a night.
Sleep is an essential factor contributing to the quality of life for people on the autism spectrum.
Experts believe there are many sleep strategies that can be used, and behavioural sleep interventions are favoured over medications.
Having a sleep plan and sticking to it is crucial to getting that coveted good night's sleep for people on the autism spectrum.
