A beautiful moment, when a smile returned

5 years ago, at the beginning of my Celebrant journey, l made a promise to this lady that when she was ready, l would help her scatter her late husband’s ashes, in the Lake District where they had spent their Wedding night, over 50 plus years ago.

Yesterday we did this, after a few anxious moments and a break in the weather, she felt the time was now right for her to let go.
It’s a great sense of release for her, and she now feels at peace with herself.

We choose the location, so she can visit this spot as often as she likes, and is somewhere she can get to easily and safely.

The Grief at the Table Where You Used to Be

The holiday season,
it snuck up on me
and along with it
a most silent and weighty grief.

Quietly, it settles in
and pulls up a seat
makes itself comfortable in
the spot where you used to be.

But all the same
I acknowledge it
I sit with it today,
on this milestone, this heavy holiday.

Can you pass the gravy?
and maybe a cherished memory?
Let the laughter flow
or let the tears fall freely?
Today can be whatever we need it to be.

Because there’s nothing normal
about a holiday without you
so I will lament and I will ache,
mingle with the grief and gratitude,

With the love and the loss,
painful firsts, mournful lasts.
a year that reminds us
of time gone much too fast.

Because the grief sits
at the table where you used to be,
but your love helps me through it
and keeps me company.

And no matter what it brings
to the table, I’ll take my seat,
I’ll face it, I’ll feel it
In honor of your memory.

When tomorrow starts without me... 29/10/2023

I took a ceremony this week for a young man that died of cancer, we concluded the service with the poem “ When tomorrow starts without me” , which l have read before a number of times, but this struck a cord with me for some reason.

The family sent me this version to listen too, and just thought, l would share it with you.

When tomorrow starts without me... A David Romano poem read by Tom O'Bedlam.‘When Tomorrow Starts Without Me’ is a simple love poem that’s addressed to all those left behind when someone dies....

Did my first centenarian funeral service yesterday, and what an honour it was.

This lady was a Canary Girl working in munitions factories during the Second World War, with the constant threat of being bombed.
She witnessed the horrors of the atomic bomb and spent her life as a peace campaigner.

She was at Greenham common from it’s early days for a number of years, and championed many causes over the years for the benefit of others.

A selfless woman, small in stature, but with a huge heart, rest now in peace perfect peace.

This week after writing and conducting ceremonies for families whose loved ones had passed away in completely different circumstances, one common thread shone through from both families.

That both these people lived a life full of love and always put others before themselves no matter what their own personal circumstances were, which was an inspiration to their families.
