Hopefully there are plenty more good hill days before winter sets in, but the nights are drawing in and the weather is getting cooler, so it's a good idea to beef up your hill kit just a little to ensure your adventures are memorable for all the right reasons.
There's a useful kit list here: https://www.mountaineering.scot/activities/hillwalking/getting-started/essential-kit

It’s cold up there! ..
The weather has a profound effect on our time outdoors and is also forever changing.

One thing to keep in mind and respect is the temperature up on the tops, and to be prepared for this with extra layers in your pack

It is guaranteed to be colder at the summit then it is in the valley or at sea level....
And now for the science…

When ascending a hill or mountain, the pressure of the air pressing down on the Earth’s surface decreases. This has an effect on the temperature as molecules collide less frequently (and therefore produce less heat) because they are more spread out.

Dry air cools at a steady rate (1C per 100m) up to the ‘dew point’. Above the dew point, the air condenses into droplets (which turn into clouds), and that condensation generates a small amount of heat. So above the dew point the air is known as saturated air, which cools more slowly at 1C per 200m, hence the changing temperature labels on the graphic. The dewpoint can vary depending on the temperature of the air at sea level.

So don’t forget those layers, even on a hot sunny day....
Respect. Protect. Enjoy. These three words are used across the UK to guide how we as humans interact with the outdoors. We will have an impact, let’s make it a positive one...

Really positive

Our seven new Visitor Rangers have now started work patrolling Perth and Kinross beauty spots.

They will provide advice to campers and visitors to help make sure visitors and residents alike do not have their enjoyment of our beauty spots spoiled.

Each Visitor Ranger will have their own van, branded with the Love it Like You Live Here logo.

The Love it Like You Live Here Campaign will also see temporary toilets installed at 11 popular tourist spots next week. Visitor Rangers will also have a supply of our Dig It In! kits they can give to campers who are pitching their tents away from any amenities so they can be sure to ‘leave no trace’.

Perth & Kinross Council Environment and Infrastructure Convener Councillor Angus Forbes said: "Last year there was, unsurprisingly, a huge number of visitors to Perth and Kinross.

"We know that the actions of just a small number of people can upset residents and other visitors so we're taking action this year to try to stop any problems arising.

"The Visitor Rangers programme has been funded for two years and we are sure they will help prevent anti-social behaviour. Perth and Kinross has many areas of outstanding natural beauty and we all have a duty to look after them.

"We know how important tourism is for many businesses in rural Perthshire and we are looking forward to welcoming responsible visitors back.”

A dedicated email address has been set up at [email protected] for communities to report any issues.
