Chancellor's Autumn Statement brought welcome news for EVs, but more is needed for full electric mobility potential. 🔌 🚌
Richard Earl, EO's R&D Director, helps break down what the statement means for the sector and highlights 4 key takeaways for EV .
Read in detail on our blog or summary below 👉 https://ow.ly/2uvf50Qk4ZV

⚡1. The Chancellor's tax break on plant and machinery benefits businesses purchasing new electric vans, trucks, tractors, and forklifts - which be fully expensed against taxable profits. However it excludes cars, leasing and rental sectors, limiting the breadth of support for fleet electrification. Disappointingly, additional measures to incentivize EV adoption weren't prominent post the delay on petrol/diesel vehicle sales ban, signaling a missed chance for stronger initiatives.

⚡2. The Government embraces Winser Review proposals to expedite grid connections, slashing major EV project delays from years to six months. This benefits fleet customers pursuing net zero goals. Additionally, their response to the National Infrastructure Commission emphasizes reduced consent times, prioritizing low carbon infrastructure and EV charging hubs in the National Planning Policy Framework.

⚡3. As the 2024 general election approaches, a lively debate on greener transport policy and electrification is anticipated. The Chancellor's subsidies for automotive and green manufacturing, totaling £2 billion, aim to bolster UK's zero-emission vehicle manufacturing, battery development, and EV supply chain.

⚡4. The Government proposed a £1,000/year energy discount for homes near pylons and substations, aimed at offsetting impacts from new EV charging station developments. Despite scheme details needing clarity and resolution of complexities, this initiative aims to expedite transportation electrification, fostering public acceptance of electric vehicles.

COP28: Government opens £70m ultra-rapid charging pilot at motorway services 18/12/2023

Investments in EV charging are crucial on all levels, from the private to public sectors, home, business and public domain. The £70M ultra-rapid charging pilot at motorway services, part of the Rapid Charging Fund (RCF) is a key example of that, and its further value to the private sector.
The RCF will fund part of the expenses for enhancing the power grid in successful motorway service areas (MSAs). This supports the private sector in expanding the charging network, boosting consumer confidence in opting for EVs.

Why failure isn't an option 👉
In the UK, over a third of CO2 emissions stem from transportation, mainly due to petrol and diesel-powered ICE vehicles. Transitioning to electric vehicles is vital in curbing our carbon footprint and lessening reliance on fossil fuels.

The earlier 2030 deadline spurred significant investment across various sectors, driving progress in electrifying vehicles for individuals, commercial fleets, and public transport. However, the abrupt policy shift now jeopardizes these efforts, causing disruptions in planning, structures, and workforce development. Reinstating EV support schemes is crucial to counter short-term hurdles in customer adoption and assist businesses in navigating these changes.

This policy reversal also imperils the government's legally-binding targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. These targets aren't mere numbers; they represent crucial commitments to environmental preservation and fighting climate change.

Petrol and diesel ban delay should not stall electric mobility transition - EnvironmentJournal 07/11/2023

The UK's 2030 petrol and diesel car phase-out deadline helped reduce emissions, but its recent extension to 2035 has raised concerns across businesses of all sizes and industries. This policy shift disrupts business planning and workforce development, requiring the reinstatement of EV support schemes. Government support and industry collaboration have accelerated electric vehicle adoption, as seen in London's electric bus rollout, commercial fleets electrification across the UK, in which our work at EO Charging with key commercial partners has played a crucial role.
Companies should continue moving away from internal combustion engines to electric alternatives, and we remain committed to a swift EV rollout.

Find more details in the article below, where Charlie Jardine helps illustrate these points further through EO's work so far.

7 reasons why drivers should opt more often for home than public 🔌⚡️👇🏽

1. No Range Anxiety: With a home charger, you start each day with a full or partially charged battery, reducing concerns about range anxiety.🔋

2. Dependability: Public charging stations may not always be available or functioning correctly. Home charging eliminates this uncertainty.✅

3.Long-Term Savings: Investing in a home charging station can provide long-term savings compared to paying for public charging over time.💰

4. Peace of Mind: Home charging offers a sense of security, knowing that you have a reliable and private charging solution.🏠

5. Reduced Environmental Impact: By charging at home, you can take advantage of renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, to reduce your carbon footprint.☀️

6. Convenience: while charging your EV can take time, waiting for that can be frustrating. Leaving your EV to charge at home, especially overnight, saves both time and money. ⏳

7. No queues: Public charging stations can often be fully occupied right when you need them. Avoiding the wait can save a lot of time and hassle in finding a free one. ☝

I’m often asked what I get up to while travelling – books, podcasts etc.
In the past 4 weeks, I’ve spent 10 days in the US attending the American Public Transportation Association EXPO, 3 days in Berlin running the Berlin marathon, one night in Amsterdam at Improved Corporate Finances 10-year anniversary, and for the road I’ve brought with me Walter Isaacson’s biography of Elon Musk. I've heard his story a bunch of times, but not in any detail, and not from such a personal perspective. It's an in depth history of the his life and in particular his journey through PayPal, Tesla and SpaceX. Similar to Isaacson's book on Steve Jobs, this one is a must read!

Transport and energy sectors respond to PM's backtracking on green policies - transportandenergy 25/09/2023

Experts from various fields within the transportation and energy industries have expressed their opinions on the Government's reduction of critical environmental policies.

"Uncertainty and change in policy will only serve to slow or even reverse this progress hindering the development of the green economy. This is an unnecessary delay to reducing emissions and fails to capitalise on the world leading work to decarbonise UK electricity generation. We would urge that the 2030 deadline remains in place, global warming isn’t slowing down neither should the push to fight against it. Despite this change in policy, we will continue to work with our industry and financial partners to ensure that the roll out continues at the current pace.” Charlie Jardine, CEO and Founder, EO Charging

Transport and energy sectors respond to PM's backtracking on green policies - transportandenergy Professionals from across the transport and energy sectors have condemned the Government's watering down of key green policies - including delaying the ban on the sales of new petrol and diesel cars to 2035.
