However, behaviours learned at a young age are not always helpful in dealing with issues that we face as adults. Although our conscious mind knows how to deal with situations rationally, the unconscious mind which is the driving force, can create a raft of limiting and unhelpful behaviours because of early programming.

PTSD, Trauma, Phobias & High Anxiety Conditions
When a person encounters an event or situation which they perceive to be dangerous or threatening, their brain instantly focuses on the source of the threat and their body goes into survival mode, often known as the Fight or Flight Response. The additional physical and emotional energy created is used up as the situation passes and their body returns to normal once again. The person’s brain then processes what has happened by separating their emotional response from their physical experience and storing these in different areas of the brain, enabling them to make rational sense of the event. However, sometimes this separation process does not occur and when this happens, it can lead to phobia or trauma.

During a traumatic event, a person’s emotional response may be so extreme that the entire memory of the event becomes locked in the emotional centres of the brain, ready to re-activate whenever they encounter a similar situation which resembles the original event. Instead of being processed by the Hippocampus (the area of the brain which gives an event context) and then being transferred to the Neocortex (the area of the brain where memories are stored), the event remains trapped in the Amygdala; the part of the brain responsible for the fight or flight response. Although the original event may have happened some time ago, it feels as though it is happening very much in the present and this is often true for people who may be experiencing phobias. fears and PTSD.
The Rewind Technique
Based on a Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) technique from the 1970s called Visual-Kinaesthetic (VK) Dissociation or the Fast Phobia Cure, the Rewind Technique is a non-intrusive, safe and effective therapy designed to help people who are experiencing phobias, trauma or PTSD. The name comes from the way in which the person is asked to use their imagination to ‘rewind’ the memory of the traumatic events. Rewind Therapy works by allowing the person to reprocess the traumatic memory so that the emotional information is disconnected from the actual event, therefore enabling the person’s brain to re-code the information and release the anxiety. The memory is moved from the Amygdala to the Neocortex, allowing the memory to be transformed from traumatic, to ordinary and non-threatening.

Benefits of Rewind Therapy
One of the real benefits of Rewind Therapy is that a person does not need to reveal every detail of the traumatic event(s) in order for the therapist to work with them. This means that they do not have to re-experience the events that have caused the phobia or traumatic symptoms. In therapy we use the Rewind Technique in combination with hypnosis, as this allows a person to enter a deeply relaxed trance state where they can calmly reprocess memories and experiences.

The Effects Stress Can Have On Your Body & Mind
It’s a well-known fact that a certain amount of stress is a good thing. It can keep you on your toes and make sure you don’t get complacent.

Too much stress, however, and suddenly things start to go haywire.

So what does stress do to your body and mind?

According to the American Psychological Society (APA), stress is your body’s way of protecting you against pain and injury. When you’re stressed, your muscles tense up. It’s a sort of reflex action.

They add that stress falls into two categories: acute stress and chronic stress.

Acute stress is short-term, such as you’d experience if you had to suddenly slam on the brakes in your car to avoid an accident.

This triggers your sympathetic nervous system to initiate the fight or flight response.

Your heart rate increases and your body sends out more of the stress hormones like Adrenalin and cortisol. More blood gets pumped around your body, which raises your blood pressure.

Once the danger has passed, however, your body settles down and things go back to normal.

Chronic stress refers to the same kinds of stressors, but over an extended period of time. That means your body doesn’t have enough time to settle down, and that puts a lot of strain on it.

More stress hormones are triggered more often, coupled with raised blood pressure levels, all of which depletes your energy reserves and leads to a certain amount of wear and tear on your body.

The damage that stress can cause shouldn’t be underestimated. And that relates to your mental health as much as your physical health.

Stress affects every aspect of your life, including your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Some of the symptoms you may experience if you’re feeling stressed include the following, according to an article on WebMD:

Feeling frustrated or moody
Feeling overwhelmed
Being unable to relax
Feeling worthless and lonely
Wanting to avoid other people

The article adds that physical symptoms can include:
A lack of energy
Headaches
Nervousness
Chest pain
Frequent colds and infections
Difficulty sleeping
Your mental reasoning can also be affected, with symptoms such as:

Constant worry and anxiety
An inability to focus
Forgetfulness
Always seeing the negative side of things
Too much anxiety messes with your mind, making it impossible for you to make good decisions. You can’t be creative or innovative either if you think you’re on the verge of a panic attack.

And living in a constant stressful state means that you have neither the energy nor the peace of mind to gain insights, make revelations, or solve problems.

Being able to relax mentally and physically is crucial, especially when you’re going through tough times or making important decisions.

That’s when hypnosis can be such a powerful and useful tool.

The secret is this: you can’t be stressed when you’re relaxed.
Hypnosis is totally geared towards inducing relaxation.

And when you’re relaxed, you’re able to let the conscious world go and just focus inward on the things you want to change.

It’s easy to say, of course, but where’s the proof? Is hypnosis really that good at inducing relaxation and helping to relieve stress?

How The Science Backs Up Hypnosis
In their article The Effectiveness of Hypnotherapy in Reducing Stress Levels, authors Alizamar et al tested 6 counselees who were known to be in a stressed condition before being given hypnotherapy.

After hypnotherapy, their stress levels declined. The authors concluded that hypnotherapy was effective at reducing stress levels.

Cluttering
Someone who clutters has a very fast rate of speech, and talk in rapid bursts, making them hard to understand. This is closely related to stammering. People who clutter may:

leave off word endings
omit or distort sounds or syllables (“elephant” becomes “elphant”; “orange” becomes “orng”)
run their words together
use lots of fillers words, like 'as', 'um' or 'uh'
repeat or revise phrases, or words
have difficulty organising thoughts or getting to the point
find it hard to slow down, even when asked
tend to interrupt.
Cluttering often exists alongside other speech differences, including stammering. Cluttering can also occur alongside attention deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) or autistic spectrum disorder (ASD).
A person who clutters may be unaware of any difficulty, so a parent, manager or colleague may suggest that they get help because they find it hard to understand them.
Therapy will vary from person to person. Becoming more aware of when they aren’t being understood can help someone who clutters. They can then use strategies like pausing between phrases and sentences and over-articulating certain words to make themselves understood.

Stammering
Most children who start stammering in early childhood will stop stammering either spontaneously or through speech therapy.
For adults, the picture is different. We don’t know enough about stammering, but we do know that if someone stammers into adulthood they are likely to continue to stammer for the rest of their lives, although the degree may vary widely. There is no ‘cure’, no pill or therapy which will make stammering go away. Therapies and interventions can help people manage their stammer and learn to speak more easily. This is often not a permanent fix and the struggle will still be there, but will be more in your control
There are instances where the stammer can stop almost completely and that's it, or it may start again years later.

Stammering -CAUSES & CURES
Most stammering develops during childhood and is a neurological, rather than a psychological, condition. Subtle changes within the brain result in a physical difficulty in talking. Stammering isn’t caused by anxiety or stress, although people may stammer more when stressed or anxious.

It is often a hereditary condition – about 60% of people who stammer have another family member who stammers. Most adults who stammer, around 75%, are male. When it begins in childhood, this is known as developmental stammering.

Around 8% of children, boys and girls, will go through a short period of stammering between the ages of two and five. Short means months rather than years. The stammer may come and go during childhood, but if it continues into adulthood, then it's likely to be a lifelong condition. Up to 3% of adults in the UK say that they stammer.

A far rarer form of stammering, known as 'acquired stammering', usually occurs later in life. The main causes are a head injury, a stroke or a condition such as Parkinson’s disease. Other causes can be extreme emotional distress, medication or drugs.

LIFE WITH A STAMMER
Having a stammer can have a significant impact on a person's mental and emotional well-being and self-worth. In 2019 we asked our members how stammering affected their lives:

Nearly 90% had been teased or bullied because of their stammer.
Over half said their stammer affected their choice of career.
Nearly half said they’d stayed in a job longer because they worried they wouldn’t get another job elsewhere.
15% reported feeling suicidal because of their stammer.
Research shows, time and again, that people who stammer develop negative feelings about themselves because of other people’s responses. Bullying and teasing at school, exclusion from activities, and the countless thoughtless responses received in daily encounters, whether it's shopping, travelling, socialising or at work. Having someone hang up the phone, walk away mid-conversation, giggle and mimic them. The assumption that you are nervous, or just slow on the uptake.

Stammering continues to be portrayed in the media as something needing to be ‘cured’, seeding the assumption by those who don’t stammer, that if you do, then you need to get ‘fixed’. Add to this a culture where portraying someone stammering is usually done for comic effect, and the damaging psychological impact of living with a stammer starts to become clear.

Don’t assume that someone whose stammer appears ‘mild, if there at all’, doesn’t struggle with it. They may not, but you have no idea what their internal dialogue is or how it impacts them mentally and emotionally.

Imagine what it must be like if every time you open your mouth to say something, you fear being judged negatively, being seen as incompetent, weak, mentally slow or untrustworthy. The stress of getting through school, making friends and finding employment with a stammer can take its toll on mental health, consequently leading to higher levels of depression in those who stammer.

LIVING WITH A STAMMER
For those who stammer, everyday life can be an obstacle course. Situations that fluent speakers take for granted, but that can be impossible or almost impossible for those who stammer, include:

• Introducing yourself.
• Giving your name at a coffee shop or at a reception desk.
• Speaking to a voice-activated menu on a telephone customer line.
• Talking to someone on the telephone.
• Using a smart speaker.
• Using an intercom.

Stammering may be regarded as a disability under the Equality Act 2010. However, due to feelings of shame, many people who stammer are reluctant either to disclose their stammer or to name it as a disability.

BEHIND THE STAMMER
The physical act of stammering can be a tiny part of the experience. The bigger part is often the mental machinations that someone who stammers endures. Anticipating times when they'll need to talk, the negative responses, the ever-present expectation that they need fixing or just need to breathe properly. Feelings of shame, embarrassment, anger, anxiety and fear. Frustration that saying one’s name – the one thing that most people who stammer will find hard to say – will stymie their every encounter. The frustration of not being taken seriously.

Stammering is variable. A stammer can change from one day, hour or sentence, to the next. The daily impact of this can be disempowering: to literally have the ability to take an active part in conversations or even order a coffee, be taken away by a physical disability.

There are all kinds of help out there for people to manage a stammer, and we'll try and cover them here on this site. But we don’t know enough about what causes it. We don't understand why saying one's name can be such a hurdle, or why a stammer will go when talking in unison or singing.

Physically, stammering can be deeply frustrating, but the main problem, time and again, is other people's responses.

18/06/2019

Stammering is a neurological condition which makes it physically hard to speak. Someone who stammers will repeat, prolong or get stuck on sounds or words. There might also be signs of visible tension as the person struggles to get the word out.

About 8% of children will stammer at some point, but most will go on to talk fluently. For up to 3% of adults it will be a lifelong condition. Stammering affects mainly men and every ethnicity.

There is no link between stammering and intellectual capacity. Like other neurological conditions, it covers a spectrum, everyone stammers differently and to different degrees. For some there’ll be periods of their life when they stammer less and others when they will struggle to speak. Many find that as they get older the condition improves.

In the UK we largely use the term stammering, elsewhere in the world the term used is stuttering.

STIGMA
Stammering has been used as a device to make people laugh and to indicate dishonesty or low intelligence. This stereotyping, and the frustration caused by the difficulty of talking with others, has led many to avoid stammering and find ways of sounding ‘normal’.

You may know someone who stammers ‘a little’, or be surprised to hear that someone you know well tells you that they stammer. Societal expectations mean that people will often try to avoid stammering. They will anticipate speaking situations and plan for them. They may swap a word they expect to stammer on. Or they may keep what they say to the bare minimum. They may arrive late to a meeting to avoid introducing themselves.

Because stammering has very little visibility in public life, people’s reaction when they hear a stammer can take many inappropriate forms, and people often misunderstand why someone appears to stumble when they talk, assuming it's nerves or that the person is drunk or unwell.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Kenilworth 02/09/2018

What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly effective treatment method for a wide range of issues.
EMDR is a powerful therapeutic approach with the aim of reducing distress in the shortest period of time. It uses the natural healing ability of your body to clear emotional and cognitive blockages.
The mind can often heal itself naturally and much of this occurs during sleep, particularly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. However, when you experience a traumatic event (eg a car accident) or are repeatedly exposed to distress (eg childhood neglect) your natural coping mechanism can become overloaded and disturbing experiences become stuck and unprocessed. EMDR utilises eye movements to help you process blocked information so that the distressing memory tends to change in such a way that it loses its painful intensity and becomes a neutral memory of an event in the past.
EMDR treatment is recommended by the government's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines. It has successfully treated over 1 million individuals for PTSD.
In addition, the World Health Organisation's new guidelines recommend EMDR for trauma and loss, PTSD, acute stress and bereavement. They state "...EMDR therapy aims to reduce subjective distress and strengthen adaptive cognitions related to the traumatic event... these techniques help people reduce vivid, unwanted, repeated recollections of traumatic events" (WHO 2013).
I can help you with trauma, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, stress, sleep problems, bereavement, addictions, pain control, low self-esteem, performance anxiety, PTSD and phobias.

EMDR can help you with reducing the painful intensity of your distressing memory. Other associated memories may also heal at the same time. This linking of related memories can lead to a dramatic improvement in many aspects of your life.
If you feel you or a loved one or friend could benefit from EMDR Therapy, call Stuart -07825 599340

When We Don’t Love Ourselves, We Can’t Be Loved By Someone Else
When we don’t love and accept ourselves fully, we can’t ever have a great relationship or a happy life.

Our partner may whisper, “I love you so much” and we won’t believe them. We’ll always be looking for evidence that they are secretly losing interest.

Did they call us when they said they would? (If they didn’t, it’s because they don’t love us.)

Did they initiate s*x, or cuddle like they used to, or hold our hands when we walked down the street? (They are losing interest. They’ve met someone else. I’m less desirable than I was ten years ago.)

We can’t tell them our secret feelings or fears, because it will push them away.

We feel like we “aren’t good enough” to date our crush, or we settle for someone who is “safe” or “fine” but who doesn’t make our heart leap with joy.

We don’t trust our partners (they aren’t telling the truth). We think they are cheating (where was she last night?)

We carry around the pain of never feeling good enough to have the kind of love other people experience. We doubt ourselves; we doubt our partners; we doubt love.

We let challenges demoralize and deflate us, and it’s not long before we realize we’re a much smaller version of ourselves. We won’t ask for a raise; we’ll stay in dead-end jobs.

We’ll lose weight and feel fatter than ever. We give up on our health, thinking it’s too hard or takes too much effort.

We’ll look for quick fixes to make ourselves feel better: a new haircut, a one night stand, a bottle of bourbon, a brownie sundae.

But none of these fixes fix us at all. They leave us feeling lonelier, emptier, sadder.

And we will remain that way until we stop looking for other people to give us the love and care we yearn for and deserve.

After all, why would someone else love us, if we don’t think we are worthy?

Stutter Stammering and Tremors
Hypnotherapy Kenilworth

Stuttering Hypnotherapy
Stuttering is a communication disorder in which the flow of speech is broken by repetitions (li-li-like this), prolongations (lllllike this), or abnormal stoppages (no sound) of sounds and syllables.
There may also be unusual facial and body movements associated with the effort to speak. Stuttering is also referred to as stammering.
Interestingly, sufferers may not stutter or stammer at all when they cannot hear their own voice.
What causes stuttering?
There are a number of factors that have been cited to contribute to the development of stuttering, although positively identifying any particular cause does not necessarily mean an easy solution:
Genetics – approximately 60% of those who stutter have a family member who does also.
Childhood development – children with other speech and language problems or developmental delays are more likely to stutter.
Neurophysiology – recent neurological research has shown that people who stutter process speech and language slightly differently than those who do not stutter.
Family dynamics – high expectations and fast-paced lifestyles may contribute to stuttering.
Environmental social factors – growing up with stressed and angry parents – parents shouting at their children.
Stuttering may occur when a combination of factors come together and may have different causes in different people. It is probable that what causes stuttering differs from what makes it continue or get worse.
Is stuttering caused by emotional or psychological problems?
Children and adults who stutter are no more likely to have psychological or emotional problems than children and adults who do not.
However, it is interesting that when a client suffering from a stutter or stammer first experiences Hypnosis, very often the stutter or stammer recedes due to the deep level of relaxation that Hypnosis offers.
Often a stutterer has placed themselves under so much “internal pressure” that the problem could almost be described as “Anticipatory Anxiety”, a process we examine and discuss at length .
Stutters or stammers are also often the result of Social Anxiety and almost certainly exacerbated by a sense of being judged or feeling “on the spot”.
Adults who stammer
Stammering can be a deeply frustrating and isolating condition.
Stammering is found in all parts of the world and affects the rich, the poor, the highly intelligent and those who have learning difficulties. There are many famous people who stammered, for example King George VI (the Queen's father), Marilyn Monroe, Bruce Willis and Gareth Gates. Stammering occurs in 1% of adults. Most stammering begins in early childhood and children who have been stammering for more than 3 years are more likely to continue to stammer throughout their lives.

Other people, even close relatives, may think that your stammer is solely related to your speech, or they may not know that you stammer because you hide it so well. Regardless of what others think, you will know that the answer to the question 'What is stammering?' is that it is a speech problem, but also a problem of the negative feelings and thoughts associated with the act of speaking.

Although there is no guaranteed ‘cure’ for stammering by the time you reach teenage years, there is so much that can be done to improve the situation. The first step is to realise that developing a positive approach will start to make other things happen.
Unfortunately, there is no evidence of a universal cure for stammering - in other words, there is no approach that works like a magic pill for everyone. This situation is perhaps not so surprising when it is considered that there is still no complete answer to the question, 'What causes stammering?' Most experts agree that it is due to a combination of factors - physiological, neurological, psychological and environmental - but the precise ways that these factors operate together is not known, and clearly the combination will be different from one individual to another.

What is clear, then, is that stammering is a complex condition with many characteristics affecting each individual in a unique way. Whilst two people who stammer may sound similar to an outsider, the factors that trigger stammering, and reactions to stammering (both physical and emotional) can be very different. These aspects are highly personal and make it important to consider individual needs in any course of therapy.
Tremors
Tremors are movement disorders, characterised by changes in muscle movement .
There are many different types tremors, and what initially causes them. I will help you understand the part that hypnosis plays in controlling your issue. Hypnotherapy may be an effective treatment option for patients seeking relief from their parkinsonian symptoms or essential tremor issues .
Emotional energy can often be stored in the smooth muscle around organs and joints and we can work to release these restrictions .
Previous studies have found hypnosis to be effective at treating symptoms of PD such as pain, depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance, and autonomic dysfunction
Studies 90% of our decisions and that behaviors are established at a very young age. The unconscious mind’s primary function is to protect us. However, behaviors learned at a young age are not always helpful in dealing with issues that we face as adults. Life changes, and so can you!
