Dear Stuart,
Sam has rated your business:
"I never thought I’d be free of my eating disorder, until I met Stuart Downing.
It’s not often that you can say that someone truly changes your life. But Stuart did that for me. I had been a binge eater for as long as I can remember. I had tried crash diets, self help books and even trying not to eat just to find peace! Five sessions with Stuart and for the first time in my life I feel in control of my eating, rather than my eating being in charge of me. If you have any kind of reservation about doing it, I promise you within the first five minutes all anxieties have disappeared and you’ll feel at ease with Stuart. Go for it, you won’t regret it! "
Kind regards,
Trusted Practitioner
Anger is something we do not manage as well as we need to. Often it controls us, and we use it to control others. Anger may cause you to react inappropriately towards loved ones, friends, or those you work with and instead of stopping to look at what’s triggered you in the first place, we tend to displace our uncomfortable feelings. Not knowing how to manage or recognise anger causes it to grow and intensify, affecting anyone that gets in the way.
If you feel anger is creating problems in your life/relationships .. call Stuart for a free no-obligation telephone call to see how I can help - stuart - 07825 599340 -

The Effects Stress Can Have On Your Body & Mind
It’s a well-known fact that a certain amount of stress is a good thing. It can keep you on your toes and make sure you don’t get complacent.
Too much stress, however, and suddenly things start to go haywire.
So what does stress do to your body and mind?
According to the American Psychological Society (APA), stress is your body’s way of protecting you against pain and injury. When you’re stressed, your muscles tense up. It’s a sort of reflex action.
They add that stress falls into two categories: acute stress and chronic stress.
Acute stress is short-term, such as you’d experience if you had to suddenly slam on the brakes in your car to avoid an accident.
This triggers your sympathetic nervous system to initiate the fight or flight response.
Your heart rate increases and your body sends out more of the stress hormones like Adrenalin and cortisol. More blood gets pumped around your body, which raises your blood pressure.
Once the danger has passed, however, your body settles down and things go back to normal.
Chronic stress refers to the same kinds of stressors, but over an extended period of time. That means your body doesn’t have enough time to settle down, and that puts a lot of strain on it.
More stress hormones are triggered more often, coupled with raised blood pressure levels, all of which depletes your energy reserves and leads to a certain amount of wear and tear on your body.
The damage that stress can cause shouldn’t be underestimated. And that relates to your mental health as much as your physical health.
Stress affects every aspect of your life, including your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. Some of the symptoms you may experience if you’re feeling stressed include the following, according to an article on WebMD:
Feeling frustrated or moody
Feeling overwhelmed
Being unable to relax
Feeling worthless and lonely
Wanting to avoid other people
The article adds that physical symptoms can include:
A lack of energy
Headaches
Nervousness
Chest pain
Frequent colds and infections
Difficulty sleeping
Your mental reasoning can also be affected, with symptoms such as:
Constant worry and anxiety
An inability to focus
Forgetfulness
Always seeing the negative side of things
Too much anxiety messes with your mind, making it impossible for you to make good decisions. You can’t be creative or innovative either if you think you’re on the verge of a panic attack.
And living in a constant stressful state means that you have neither the energy nor the peace of mind to gain insights, make revelations, or solve problems.
Being able to relax mentally and physically is crucial, especially when you’re going through tough times or making important decisions.
That’s when hypnosis can be such a powerful and useful tool.
The secret is this: you can’t be stressed when you’re relaxed.
Hypnosis/NLP is totally geared towards inducing relaxation.
And when you’re relaxed, you’re able to let the conscious world go and just focus inward on the things you want to change.
It’s easy to say, of course, but where’s the proof? Is hypnosis really that good at inducing relaxation and helping to relieve stress?
How The Science Backs Up Hypnosis
In their article The Effectiveness of Hypnotherapy in Reducing Stress Levels, authors Alizamar et al tested 6 counselees who were known to be in a stressed condition before being given hypnotherapy.
After hypnotherapy, their stress levels declined. The authors concluded that hypnotherapy was effective at reducing stress levels.

Self Esteem and blame
Are you convinced that life is never going to turn out right, and it's all your fault?
You make a mistake at work, you forget an appointment, you say unintentionally hurtful things to someone you care about, you gain ten pounds... and before you know it, you've fallen into a deep pit of despair.
Maybe you start to ask yourself these types of dead-end questions:
What's wrong with me?
Why can't I do anything right?
Why is the world against me?
Why can't I do what I need to do in order to be happy?
When we torment ourselves with this kind of pessimism, we get locked up inside ourselves and can't seem to escape.
Can't Forgive Yourself?
Hearts In True Harmony
Did you say or do something to a loved one that you can't take back? Did you make a mistake that made life difficult for someone?
Our relationships can flourish or wither, depending on how we choose to respond in certain critical moments. If we know what to say and how to say it, we can transform a mistake into an opportunity for more love and closeness.
Transform Your Relationship in 10 Seconds
We get trapped in a kind of emotional emergency.
This is a state of mind when we feel a sense of dread that we can't seem to escape, no matter how much we try.
It's painful and debilitating. It keeps us from doing what we really need to do in order to make our lives better. It's as if all our motivation, energy, and creativity leaks out and we don't want to do a thing except lay on the couch and feel sorry for ourselves.
Have you ever experienced this? Are you experiencing this now?
If so, it may SEEM like there is no way out of this suffering. It may SEEM that you are, indeed, broken and at fault. That you are to blame for everything "bad" that's happening in your life.
But of course, you're not.
Because what's really happening inside you is NOT that you're flawed in some way, but that there's something inside you that's trying to break free.
What's trying to break free is something that you haven't been able to acknowledge or recognise. But once you do acknowledge and recognise it, everything will change for you.
You will find your way out of the prison of despair you've created.
And you will finally be able to have the peace of mind you've been longing for your entire life.
This is what's trying to break free...
How To Attain Peace of Mind At Last
What's Underneath The Dead-End Questions
When you're blaming yourself for all of your problems, it can seem like the concept of "inner peace" is for everyone but you.
But even in those moments, there IS a path to inner peace.
It just may not be where you think it is.
Sometimes finding the solution to problems we face in life is all about asking the right questions.
Instead of asking yourself the dead-end question, "What's wrong with me," you may try asking yourself,
"What is it that's trying to break through in me? What is it that's trying to emerge?"
The reason these questions are so powerful is because often, when we find ourselves in a state of emotional emergency, we want to contract and hide. These alternate questions actually do the opposite. They challenge us to look underneath that state of despair for something else.
These alternate questions force us to expand and welcome something new.
And this new thing that's trying to emerge is our authentic self. It's our creativity. It's growth and breakthrough.
But all of this is being blocked by fear.
This is especially true when you're going through a transition in your life, such as starting a new career, getting married, getting divorced, or stepping into the unknown in some way.
If the transition involves some kind of creative expansion on your part, then the fear that comes up to block that is even more potent.
In other words, your fear wants you to stay small and limited because your fear thinks it's keeping you SAFE. Your fear believes you won't get hurt or diminished as long as you stay in your comfort zone.
The way to stay in that comfort zone is to tell yourself there's something wrong with you. That you can't do it. That you'll never be able to do it. That you'd better get used to life being how it is now.
This is how your fear keeps you from taking risks and stepping into new territory in your life.
It does it by attacking your self-esteem.
This is why, at the moment of any creative breakthrough, your ability to love yourself is most threatened.
However, if you never allow yourself a creative breakthrough, how can you ever experience growth, bliss, or peace of mind?
Exactly! You can't.
You will just keep doing what you're doing, all the while blaming yourself for your inability to stay on track, stay motivated, or "get it together."
Knowing this, what can you do to reach your full potential?
How can you take the steps that will allow you to change your life and express your creativity?
The answer is, of course, learning how to love yourself, even at the very moment when you least want to.

Life is but a dream - especially during shock
"Everything was like slow motion! It felt unreal, like a dream!"
People who experience shock or even surprise very commonly describe their experience as having a dreamlike quality. Though for many, it would more accurately be described as a nightmare.
The hypnotic mind and the dreaming mind are closely connected, it seems. I describe here why and how the REM (rapid eye movement) state is accessed during wakefulness in hypnotic trance.
Before we enter hypnosis, before we start dreaming, and also as we enter shock, an electrical spike fires in the brain, from the brain stem all the way up to the neocortex. This is known as the PGO spike.
Stage hypnotists instigate activation of the PGO spike when they unexpectedly tip a volunteer backwards and then command them to "Sleep!" My PGO spike would have fired as I floated through the air all those years ago, but it's also fired many times since - every time I've entered dream sleep or hypnosis, as well as at other times I've been shocked.
The REM state, when accessed during wakefulness, can be used to emotionally program us - for better or for worse.
The rapid eye movement - or REM - state is usually connected to dreaming, and is so called because during REM your eyeballs flicker from side to side. But REM can also occur when we are awake. In fact, even before we're born we experience the REM state - and it's through the this state that instincts are laid down in the womb.1 So REM has to do with dreaming but also, it seems, with instinctual programming.
During hypnosis, when we enter the REM state (albeit it not through the state of sleep), new ways of responding to life can be programmed or assimilated into us.
This can happen in ways that work against us, as when we enter wide-awake REM during a trauma and thereafter experience horrible 'post-hypnotic suggestions' every time we encounter a trigger that hypnotically regresses us back to that original experience (flashbacks).
Or it can happen in ways that help us, as when purposefully used hypnosis allows us to overcome phobias, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or depression.
The reason shock often feels dreamlike and unreal is because this state of mind is actually related to dreaming and hypnosis.

Know the Stages of Relapse
Stage One: Denial –The addict pretends that everything is okay.
Stage Two: Avoidance and Defensive Behaviour – The addict avoids thinking about their own situation and starts focusing on others. The addict starts being defensive or starts lying when questioned about things in their past or present. They may also start to feel lonely, even though they are surrounded by people.
Stage Three: Depression – Feeling lonely or left out, addicts may start feeling depressed and start developing irregular eating and sleeping patterns. When an individual starts to feel more and more lethargic, they may start abandoning daily responsibilities by making plans and not following through with them; therefore, isolating themselves further from others.
Stage Four: Behavioural Loss of Control – As the addict’s depression progresses, isolation becomes more prevalent. The addict will begin to skip group support meetings or after-care treatment meetings; therefore, they stop caring about recovery or anything else happening in their lives. Beginning to feel powerless, or helpless, starts a spiral effect of turning to other things not recovery related to make themselves feel better. The addict turns to destructive-type behaviour not conducive to a healthy lifestyle, thinking that this destructive behaviour will not hold a serious consequence.
For example, overeating, sleeping too much, turning to the opposite s*x for validation, or turning to anything, in general, to dull or numb the pain of everyday life and everyday problems. This eventually leads to fear, anger, resentment, and eventually a total loss of control where finally the physical relapse occurs.
Stage Five: Physical Relapse – Once the addict consumes the substance of their choice, by using just that ONE TIME, it can result in INTENSE cravings and the UNCONTROLLABLE desire to continue to use. At this point, an intervention is necessary for the addict because the addiction has taken over again. The addict begins to feel even more lonely, even more stressed out, and even more unfulfilled, and they begin to think that their future is hopeless, that they are unworthy of others. This downward spiral of physical relapse brings shame and guilt resulting in a relapse heading into days, weeks, or even years, of uncontrollable using.
By letting the addict know that it is not the end of the world, that they can get themselves back on track, is vital to convincing an addict to seek help by going to meetings, calling their support network, or maybe even admitting themselves into a treatment program.
Warning Signs that a Relapse is Occurring
It is easy for an addicted individual to only remember the positive parts of their drug use; thereby romanticising their past experience, and then war-storying about them and forgetting all the anguish it may have caused them. Addicts change their people, places, and things in order to recover, but once they start revisiting their old relationships that they were involved with during their drug use and romanticising their past experiences, it becomes harder and harder to stay on the path of recovery and relapse becomes inevitable.
After depression starts to set in, an individual will begin to avoid their interests and hobbies that they developed in recovery. The depression then gets worse with their increased isolation and avoidance of their support system. The individual may then start speaking negatively about the recovery process and start looking down on those individuals in recovery. This is a sure indicator that they are on their way to relapse
What an Individual Can Do if they Feel They are in Relapse Mode
Don’t act impulsively. Wait for approximately 30 minutes and try to distract yourself by thinking or doing other things, like watching a television show or taking a walk or calling someone in your recovery network, like your sponsor or another friend in recovery. Passing the time this way can help diminish the craving of wanting to use, and when practising this method, the cravings may start to go away quicker and easier.
Thinking about the actions and consequences of just using that one time is also a good distraction. Playing the scenario through to the end of the consequences of relapsing, such as the inability to stop using once started, the shame and guilt, and the rock bottom you will hit, if not the same one, then a deeper rock bottom.
Stay in today, one day at a time. Don’t worry about tomorrow. Many people with years in recovery still struggle one day at a time. You are not alone. Thinking of recovery in terms of length can be too overwhelming for an individual that is fresh in recovery. They get intimidated or overwhelmed and end up relapsing.
If you are having a hard time with living in recovery one day at a time, try living in recovery one minute at a time. By living this way, you will surprise yourself how your time in recovery adds up, day by day, month by month, then year by year.
Boredom is a trigger for many individuals, take up an interest or hobby to keep yourself from staying too much in your head and letting your addiction fester, ultimately contributing to a relapse.

What is impostor syndrome?
Research has shown that up to 70% of people will suffer from impostor syndrome at some point in their lives. It is more prevalent in women, but men also experience it, and it especially affects high-achievers and successful people, from actors and executives to business owners and writers.
Impostor syndrome is a pattern of thoughts and underlying beliefs causing a person to worry that they’re not good enough to be in the position or role that they're in. People that suffer from impostor syndrome have great difficulty believing that they deserve their success. Often, on the surface, they appear to be performing well, but they tend to experience a persistent and underlying fear that any minute now they will mess it up and get found out! Impostor syndrome is linked to perfectionism and a fear of failure, and sufferers may also experience anxiety, a lack of confidence, and/or depression.
This psychological condition was first written about and named in 1978 in an article by two psychologists - Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes. They interviewed 150 high-achieving women, and found that despite consistent evidence of external validation (degrees, top jobs, recognition of excellence by colleagues), these women lacked the internal acknowledgement of their accomplishments. They tended to explain and attribute their achievements to luck, or being in the right place at the right time, rather than recognising that their success was down to their own qualities, capabilities, efforts, or skills.
Signs and symptoms of impostor syndrome
If you’re suffering from impostor syndrome, you may experience anxiety around performing certain actions or just general anxiety about the job or role that you’re in.
You may avoid taking on tasks like presenting, public speaking, sharing your content on social media, or putting yourself forward for a promotion.
You may find it really uncomfortable to ask for the money you deserve for the work you do.
You may work far too hard or become a people pleaser to make up for your belief that you’re not worthy.
You may procrastinate tasks or, on the other end of the scale, you may over-prepare for them, feeling that you need to cover every single detail to be good enough.
Rationally, people know that they possess the experience, skills, and qualities to be where they are in their career or life, but there is an underlying feeling that they are not capable, or are faking it and are going to get found out.
What causes impostor syndrome?
The feeling of not being good enough is normally linked to a limiting belief we have picked up in early life. This early ‘programming’ is caused by messages we absorb from our environment, and the people and attitudes that are around us. We are too young to ‘filter’ or rationalise whether these messages are true or not. Even though limiting beliefs causing a lack of confidence or self-worth often start when we are very young, we carry them in our subconscious minds for years. The good news is these negative thoughts can be challenged and transformed into more positive ones. In other words, our negative ‘programming’ can be re-programmed into positives by using some conscious and subconscious tools and techniques.
How can people suffering help themselves?
If you feel that you suffer from impostor syndrome, you can help yourself in the following ways;
Talk about it - don’t keep it inside, talk to someone you trust about what you’re experiencing. This will ease the burden and help you to realise that some of your fears are probably unfounded.
Realise you are not alone! Many, many people suffer from a lack of confidence at some point in their lives. Knowing that you’re not the only one can make you feel more connected with others and less absorbed in your own thoughts.
Write down your achievements, qualities, and skills. This helps to challenge any limiting beliefs and show you that you really are capable, experienced enough and good enough to be in the well-deserved position you’re in.
How does hypnotherapy help?
As well as the tools above, which are at a conscious level, on a subconscious and deeper level hypnotherapy can really help. We can access the root cause of the feeling of being ‘not enough’, and help the person to understand when and why this limiting belief started. With the understanding that this belief is often outdated and false, the person is free to let it go and move forward positively. This deeper work can be likened to ‘pulling out the root of a problem so that we can plant new seeds’, and affect long-lasting and profound change.
