Last week we shared the news that Carers UK has joined forces with the new government to champion the needs of carers.

But why is this so important? Unpaid carers are the bedrock of our communities. They provide vital support to millions, allowing them to live independently and with dignity.

The impact on carers themselves is significant, with many facing extra costs, reduced work opportunities, and a real strain on their own well-being.

Carers UK CEO, Helen Walker, emphasises the urgent need for action. Long NHS waiting times, cuts and staff shortages in social care, and an outdated benefits system are pushing carers to take on even more responsibility. A shocking 600 carers a day are forced to give up work entirely to provide care.

The mental health toll is also concerning. Over a quarter of carers report poor mental health, with many bravely continuing to care despite feeling overwhelmed. It's vital to remember the immense value carers bring. The care they provide saves the UK economy a staggering £162 billion a year, the equivalent of a whole second NHS! Yet, worryingly, 78% of carers fear they won't be able to continue caring in the future.

Carers UK is calling for a fundamental shift. Carers' needs must be prioritised by the government. They need financial security to cover the additional costs of caring and support their own well-being. Practical assistance, like help with transport and respite care, can make a huge difference. Finally, employers can play a crucial role by offering flexible work arrangements.

Unpaid carers can't do this alone. Let's show them the support they deserve!

July is Good Care Month - a time dedicated to celebrating the incredible people who provide care.

Today, 24th July, marks 24/7 Samaritans Awareness Day & The Big Listen.

The Samaritans are a lifeline for many, offering emotional support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 24/7 raises awareness about their services and the importance of reaching out if you're struggling.

Spread the word! Let your friends and family know the Samaritans are there for anyone who needs to talk. They can be a source of comfort and support during difficult times.

Donations help the Samaritans continue offering free emotional support. Visit their website (link below) to find out more about their work and how you can contribute.

The Big Listen events provide a space for people to come together and connect, especially helpful for those feeling alone. Look for events near you on the Samaritans website.

Sometimes the best way to help is simply being a good listener. Lend an ear and offer a non-judgmental space to talk. Let someone know you're there for them.

If you're suffering or know someone who is, there is help available.

The Samaritans offer free support. Call them anytime on 116 123 (UK & Ireland). Their kind and understanding volunteers are always there to listen.

Their website also provides online chat, email support, and self-help resources. It provides a wealth of information to help you cope with difficult emotions.

Encourage someone you know to reach out if they're struggling. Let them know they're not alone and that the Samaritans are there to support them. Offer your support and tell them about the help available.

Positive news for unpaid carers!

Carers UK is working with the new Government to champion the needs of unpaid carers across the UK.
This means better recognition, financial support, practical assistance, and improved workplace flexibility for the incredible people who care for loved ones.

It follows months of campaigning by the industry body in the run-up to the General Election to ensure all political parties commit to policies that will improve the support carers receive.

Why is this important?

Unpaid carers provide vital support to millions of people, allowing them to live independently and with dignity. They often face additional costs, reduced work opportunities, and a significant impact on their own well-being.

This collaboration aims to:

Increase recognition: Unpaid carers deserve to be valued for the immense contribution they make to society.
Improve financial support: We need to ensure carers have the financial resources they need to cover additional costs and maintain their own well-being.
Offer practical assistance: Practical support can make a huge difference, from help with transportation to respite care.
Promote workplace flexibility: Employers can play a crucial role by offering flexible work arrangements to support carers.

This is a great step in the right direction! We'll be following developments closely and keeping you updated.

We all know the importance of good nutrition and hydration - no matter your age.

However, a poor diet in the elderly can cause several health complications, including a weakened immune system, lowered energy levels and other chronic issues. By making small changes to diet, such as incorporating more fruit and healthy fats into everyday meals, the risk of health implications can be reduced.

As for hydration, with the body being less able to conserve water and less attuned to thirst signals, elderly people are more likely to suffer from dehydration. This is a serious issue within older generations, with dehydration causing severe health implications. Encouraging a healthy water intake can help to reduce the risk of severe dehydration.
