Historic Leeds

I'm a proper nerd about the history of Leeds, and I love to wander through the city and see the old buildings and bridges, and wonder about the people who have seen this before us- and those who will see it after.

Technology is flying at an ever more rapid pace

Within heating controls there is a dizzying array of thermostats, controls and gubbins available-how do you know which to go for?

Should you just get a basic thermostat ? or a smart stat you can control from anywhere on earth?!

The answer is... it depends!

There's loads of options depending on the system you have, the way you live, wether you like tech etc.

Keep The Kids Kosy This Khristmas

Should You Convert To A Combi Boiler?

If you've already got one- never mind!

Converting your old heating system to a combi boiler could be a great move- or it could be a bit silly!

General pros and cons:

✅ Space Saving- removing the water cylinder creates space in your home for storage
✅ Energy Efficiency- only heating the water as you need it removes the heat loss from stored hot water and related pipework
✅ On-Demand Hot Water- you'll never run out of hot water regardless of how long your kids spend in the shower

❌ Limited Hot Water Flow- you'll struggle to run multiple outlets/showers at the same time
❌ Not Suitable For Larger Homes- as well as the hot water limitations , there is often a reduced heat output for the heating- a 30kW combo might provide 20kW for heating
❌ Pressure Dependant- combi boilers need great water pressure and flow from the mains

Combi boilers can be a GREAT option, but its far from the 'one size fits all' solution

I’m all for repairing what you can….

BUT if your boiler flue is a big old square thing like this is might be time to upgrade!

These style of boilers are very inefficient, dumping a huge amount of the heat generated into the atmosphere.

Moneysavingsupermarket claims upgrading from a G rated to an A rated condensing boiler saves:

🏠 Detached- approx £580 a year
🏠 Semi-detached- around £380 a year
🏠 Mid Floor Flat- about £150 a year.
(7th feb 2024 figures energy saving trust)

Add this to the cost of repairs, IF parts are even available- and it often becomes sensible to change.
