1๏ธโฃ I'm extremely bad at maths and had a private tutor my whole (school) life
2๏ธโฃ I have some level of OCD where the TV volume has to be on an even number & I have to prepare my clothes, breakfast, belongings etc. the night before
3๏ธโฃ I used to play the violin but I gave it up because my music teacher was too mean!
4๏ธโฃ If Physio never worked out then I was going to attempt acting!
5๏ธโฃ I suffer with sciatica (right leg) but I keep this in check by keeping my body strong, as best as I can.

Upper Back Stiffness Exercise Ideas โฌ๏ธ
1. Toy soldiers lying on a foam roller (vertical)
2. Overhead Reach with a medicine ball, lying on a foam roller (verticle)
3. Arm openings with a resistance band
4. Thoracic curls in 4-point kneeling
5. Thread the needle in 4-point kneeling
I personally find that these exercises help in reducing upper back stiffness and they feel so good after a long day of sitting/working.

โSO many of my patients WFH or work long hours at a desk with little-to-no movement breaks. Or they worry about keeping the "perfect posture" and sit in unnatural positions to what their bodies are conditioned to.
โค๏ธโ๐ฉนThis often leads to neck pain, shoulder pain, back pain and stiff hips as well as low mood and social isolation.
๐ฆต๐ผ With over 600 muscles - our bodies are designed to move in many different ways and not remain sedentary!
๐Physical activity guidelines for adults aged 19-64 (2001) suggest that adults should do at least 150-minutes of moderate intensity activity a week.
โบ๏ธDifferent 'ideal' postures work for different people. Not one size fits all. The take home message is that you need to keep moving. Your best posture is the next one.

๐โโContrary to popular belief, running can be beneficial for knee arthritis.
๐ Research shows that people who run regularly compared to non-runners do NOT have any significant worsening of their knee osteoarthritis!
๐ฉป This has been measured using knee X-Rays over a long period of time comparing runners and non-runners.
๐ฆด This suggests that running can actually help improve joint health, bone density as well as strengthen the muscles around the knee joint, providing better support and reducing discomfort ๐.
๐ So lace up those shoes and go for that jog or run this week!

๐ฅAround 80% of the population will experience back pain at some point in their life. I have experienced it myself and can appreciate how excruciating and debilitating disc bulges can be!
๐ปThe GOOD NEWS is that these can resolve spontaneously over time, with the right help from a Physiotherapist. Surgery is often the last resort. Studies have reported similar outcomes at 1-year post-surgery Vs time+physiotherapy management.
๐If you are experiencing severe back or leg pain, try not to panic. Try to balance rest as well as gradual movement. Take adequate pain relief. Experiment with heat packs and ice packs. Try to return to your normal activities over time. It will get better if you give yourself time and patience.

I am so excited to be training to become a certified WOMEN'S HEALTH PILATES INSTRUCTOR!
Being a Physiotherapist means that I don't have to just stop there. I can continuously develop my skillset and add more strings to my bow! From teaching 1:1 Pilates in the last 5-years, I wanted to expand my toolbox and be able to teach Pilates to all the wonderful ladies out there with Women's Health challenges and destroy the taboo and embarrassment that we sometimes face.
Soon I will be qualified to officially teach:

๐ENDOMETRIOSIS AWARENESS WEEK๐ -
I saw the lovely Claire today who returned for her monthly acupuncture session which she has found MASSIVELY reduces her endo pain!! Claire is super happy with her treatment results ๐. She travels 1-hour each way to attend Mav Movements and she isn't even a huge fan of needles, but she say's, "It's totally worth it!"
Endometriosis affects 1.5 million women in the UK. It is where cells similar to the ones in the lining of the womb (uterus) are found elsewhere in the body.
Some symptoms of endometriosis:

Indy attended Mav Movements today with a very stiff and painful shoulder from an injury 5 months ago. After alot of movement practice, reassurance and relaxation techniques he could take his shoulder up into full range. He was both pleased and shocked (but more pleased).
He's looking forward to returning to cricket and being able to bowl pain-free again! ๐

๐ต "Mav" is short for my surname, 'Mavani'. That's it!
2๏ธโฃ. Where am I based?
๐ด A beautiful and fully accessible little clinic in a residential area in Thurmaston, Leicester (LE4)
3๏ธโฃ. Who can I see?
๐ Anyone who is affected by a health condition or an injury. Anyone who has pain and other symptoms within the body! I even see people who don't have an injury but would like maintain their body and optimise their strength and function. I am qualified to see babies, children and adults.
4๏ธโฃ. What can I offer?
๐ก A range of treatments such as tailored exercise programmes, 1:1 Pilates, acupuncture, manual therapy, taping, soft tissue massage, postural education, ergonomics advice and electrotherapy

๐ข I help people face-to-face in my clinic as well as providing home visits locally. I also offer advice and exercise/rehab programmes virtually over video calls meaning that anyone can access my service no matter where in the world you are! ๐

Mav Movements is re-opening on Monday 22nd January and the countdown begins! โ
The clinic has been closed for 7-months and I thank you all for your patience, support and heart-felt condolences.
As many of you might be aware, I lost my Dad in September following a long and arduous health decline. He overcame many health adversities over the space of a year, including; a tumour operation, a gallstone removal, severe chemotherapy reactions, life-threatening sepsis & multi-organ failure, 2 ITU admissions, being in a coma & on a life support machine, kidney dialysis, 4 crash calls, over 20 cardioversions to the heart and multiple falls. Being the medical marvel he was, he survived all of the above and came home! But eventually, his bowel cancer spread aggressively and his body gave up within weeks of the devastating news and our world turned upside down.
Obviously, this was the most traumatic year of my life and I am still freshly grieving. I was Dad's main carer and spent 12-hours a day in hospital with him for 5-months. Dad would tell every single person that his daughter is a Physiotherapist and it gave him so much pride that I chose a profession in which he had so much faith.
The one thing I learned from him is to be strong and resilient in life no matter how many times it knocks you down ๐ช. He set an example to everyone around him and he got back up every.single.time with more determination and willpower each time. He never said "no" to having his rehab and exercise sessions and to walk and to become independent, no matter how unwell he was.
Six days before his passing, he stood up THREE times with a standing aid and 2 Physios plus myself. His food intake was limited for several months, he was in pain, on end-of-life care and he was connected to drains & oxygen tubes yet he was adamant that he could do this. It took a few attempts, but he did it, with a smile, and then he said, "That was easy!" ๐
If he can stand back up, then so can I.
So I will be commencing a phased return to Mav Movements. I will continue to strive to provide excellent care and service for all my patients.

A beautiful coincidence happened today which I would love to share.
I bumped into this wonderful Nurse at West Suffolk Hospital today. Cut a long story short - she recognised me from 10 years ago (from 2013) when I helped her 9 year old daughter on the children's ward!
Unbeknown to me, her daughter ended up naming her teddy-bear Sapna! ๐ฅน Her daughter had also written a 35-page book about her hospital journey and surgical experience, of which she included 2 pages about me and her Physio journey.
I feel so humbled and grateful. We are always making an impact on people's lives even if we may not know it at the time.

Let's Talk Leg Pain ๐ฆต๐ง
1๏ธโฃYou can have leg pain with back pain which is NOT true sciatica
2๏ธโฃYou can have leg pain (with or without back pain) which IS true sciatica
โช๏ธ The 2 conditions are different!
โช๏ธ True sciatica is rare and occurs in 5-10% of back pain cases.
โช๏ธ The other 90% of leg pain is likely to be a 'referred pain' from the back.
If you'd like to find out your diagnosis then contact a Physiotherapist who can appropriately assess and guide you.

๐ฅ Back pain can feel scary and people often fear that twisting and bending will make their back pain worse. However, evidence says it is best for your back to keep moving.
๐ If you have back pain then you should gradually increase how much you are doing and stay on the go! ๐ด๐๐ฝโโ๏ธ๐ง๐

๐ฅCLICKING JOINTS๐ฅ
๐ฆต The clicking of joints and the resulting sound is caused by dissolved gas (nitrogen gas) cavitation bubbles suddenly collapsing inside the joints.
๐ช The cracking of joints, especially knuckles, was long believed to lead to arthritis and other joint problems. However, this is not supported by medical research.
๐ซฑ If it is painful when your joints click then this could be a cause for concern, however if it is NOT a painful click, then don't worry! Joints click! ๐ค
