LRHC U11’s Match Report Saturday 13th January 2024 at Burwell
U11’s Team: Sasha J, Lilianne H, Alice M, Marley Mc, Tommy R (Vice Captain), Lucy D (Captain), and Aditi N
This weekend the U11’s had their third tournament of the season at Burwell where they played three games against Soham, ECU and the guest team, Herne Bay. For the first time this season we had a full strength squad which enabled good player rotation. Once again Lucy D, our captain for this tournament, demonstrated the qualities of being a real team player and went in goal for the team for all three games.
Our first game was against current league leaders Soham, a strong and more experienced team. Our main objective was to be disciplined in defence to keep our respective positions in our diamond formation and to ensure that we picked up the opposition players when they entered our goal area. This worked well and for the first 5 minutes we held our own and frustrated the opposition. Unfortunately, we could not maintain this and whilst we showed great determination under sustained pressure (making countless interceptions and tackles and with Lucy making several great saves), we lost the game 0-10.
We picked ourselves up for the second game and an excellent team performance against ECU gave us a 5-0 victory. We started the game well and within the first 90 seconds Tommy had got his brace. This gave us confidence and we settled into the game and started to pass and move the ball around creating lots of attacks on goal. It paid off and Lilianne added a further two just before half-time; the first a solo effort and the second gifted to her from a great pass down the line from Aditi in defence. In the second half we continued to attack, and Alice added to the scoresheet getting the first of her two goals in the tournament. Another plus from this game was that the players were able to use the little bit more time they had to make some good decisions both on and off the ball.
Our last match against Herne Bay was another tough game. We started well and it was evenly balanced in the first half. However despite Marley and Alice working hard in attack and Alice scoring 3 minutes before half time we went into the break 1-3 down. We continued to work hard in the second half, Sasha in particular continuing to support the attack but also skating back to defend and intercept the ball from the opposition when we lost possession. Unfortunately, we could not capitalise on the few opportunities on goal that we had, and the game ended 1-5.
The whole team played very well and lots of pluses to take away from the games for us to build on. Particular mention should go to our player of the matches:
• Aditi who listened to my coaching instruction to play the ball down the line when in defence – this created attacking opportunities for her teammates and in the game against ECU resulted in Lilianne skating on to one such pass and scoring.
• Marley (who was wearing new skates!) who worked hard in each game and gained more confidence as the tournament went on which was lovely to see.
• Tommy who once again demonstrated good team play and excellent sportsmanship.
As previously indicated the club’s main objective for our u11’s team is for players to gain and enjoy competitive match experience, work as a team, and do their best to execute coaching instruction. Results will come in time once solid foundations have been built.
Again lots of positives to take forward into our home tournament on the 10th February
Special thanks to Sharon Hanks for keeping us organised, Nathalie Douillet who recorded our stats and Matt Jamieson who was our referee.
A big thank you also to our travelling supporters who cheered the team on.

LRHC v Middlesborough
Our first time playing Middlesborough in the Prem for many years and also to play on a full-size rink which we are not used to. We started with our U20 team who are playing very well at the moment.
We started the game with plenty of possession and we moved the ball around well as we do with Lily, Sasha, Charlie and Kenz working like clockwork and playing some lovely passing hockey.
After 14mins of both teams creating chances to score on goal, a pass from Sasha across the rink from right to left found Charlie who swept the ball first time and hitting the ball top bins into the corner of the net. 1-0 LRHC.
We made a couple of substitutions bringing on the old guard, Nick and Marco, to mix things up a bit.
It wasn’t long before another opportunity found Sasha pick the ball up in his own area and dribble the full length of the rink and score. This took us into half time 2-0 up.
The game started well in second half and a set move starting from our area saw Mackenzie and Sasha link up well ending with a great pass from Sasha, into an oncoming Mackenzie who finished first time and finding the back of the net 3-0.
A few minutes later saw Sasha score 2 goals within a few minutes making the score 5-0.
We then conceded a penalty shortly after which was scored unfortunately 5-1
At this point play stopped whilst we swapped our keepers bringing on Reiff for Louie who had put in a solid performance.
Reiff was put under fire from the off and made some important saves.
The last 6-7 minutes was end to end with Peter scoring followed by a long flick from the opposition which found the back of the net due to Reiff being blinded by defensive players.
Overall, a very good performance by every player on the team who all gave 100%.
LRHC v Grimsby
We travelled down from Middlesborough in the morning for a 1.15pm start time.
This was a smaller rink which we are more used to which was evident as we controlled this game from the offset.
We dominated the game creating lots of goalscoring chances which with Nick bagging
4 goals, Sasha scoring 4, Marco and Mackenzie 1 each.
A lapse in concentration in defence in the second half saw Grimsby score a well worked goal, with the game ending LRHC 10-1 GRIMSBY
A very soild performance by this group of players who are starting to gel more and more with every game. We have some tough matches ahead of us in the next few weeks and we look forward to challenges that they will bring.
Well done to all players, and my usual thanks to Fay for keeping us all organised and hydrated. Thanks to all our supporters/ parents for travelling up and cheering us on.
It’s very much appreciated, you are all awesome.
Looking forward to our next match at North Herts Leisure Centre v ECU at 6pm on Saturday 13th Jan.

LRHC U11’s Match Report
Saturday 9th December 2023 at King's Lynn Rink Hockey Club
U11’s Team:
Sasha J (Captain), Alice M (Vice Captain), Lilianne H, Tommy R, Lucy D, and Aditi N
This weekend the U11’s had their second tournament of the season at Kings Lynn where they played three games against Kings Lynn, Ely and Chesterton United Rink Hockey Club and Soham RHC.
Due to prior commitments we were unfortunately missing Marley M on this occasion. However, we did have Tommy R making his LRHC debut and playing competitive roller hockey for the very first time.
Special recognition should also go to Lucy D who demonstrated the qualities of a real team player and went in goal for the
team for all three games.
Our first game was against current league leaders Kings Lynn and we knew that this would be a hard-fought battle, playing against a strong and slightly more experienced team. Our main objective was to be disciplined in defence and counterattack when we
had the opportunity. Whilst we showed great determination under sustained pressure, making countless interceptions and tackles, and goalkeeper Lucy making several great saves, in spite of our efforts we lost the game 0-5.
A spirited performance against ECU saw us narrowly lose by one goal. A closely fought game, we took the lead in the first minute with Aditi firing the ball into the back of the net, however ECU equalised just before half-time. Whilst ECU scored two quick goals
at the start of the second half what was pleasing to see was our intent to pass the ball and create opportunities for one another in attack. Another great positive was that we also tried to implement some set piece tactics as well. With just over 3 minutes to go
Lilianne got one back for us but despite our persistent efforts to attack, the game ended 2-3 to ECU.
Our last match against Soham was another tough game. A little slow to start we soon found ourselves two goals down and went into half-time trailing by five goals. However after sorting out our defensive positioning and ensuring that we marked players coming
into the box this thwarted Soham’s attack. Much more resilient in defence, Soham only managed to score once in the second half with both Alice and Sasha making great interceptions and tackles.
The whole team played exceptionally well and lots of pluses to take away from the games for us to build on. Particular mention should go to our player of the matches:
• Lilianne who listened to my coaching instruction and performed very strongly in defence.
• Lucy who was exceptional in goal, making just under 50 saves over the three games!
• Tommy who played his first competitive roller hockey matches (and with new skates!) demonstrated good team play and excellent sportsmanship.
At this stage, gaining competitive match experience and learning from it, as well as following coaching instruction are what matters most. The results will come in time and lots of positives to take forward into the next tournament on the 13th January.
Well done to all a great team effort!
Special thanks to Sharon Hanks my team assistant and Nathalie Douillet who did the honours with the stats recording. A big thank you also to Gareth Rees and ‘Riverdale Build and Construct’ our kit sponsor (we showed off both our home and away kits) and
to our travelling supporters who cheered the team on.

LRHC EC2 Blues away Tournament at Manningtree
Sunday 10th December 2023
The teams in attendance were, Colchester (Guest) the home team, Kings Lynn, Letchworth Blues, ECU Male, and Skaters.
Our players on the day were: Mark Shelley, Maxwell, Louie Allen, and Matt White (captain). (front row) Kenzie, Chloe (GK) and Charlotte.
This was undoubtably the closest fought tournament so far, with five very evenly matched teams. There were three drawn games, two games being won by a single goal, and only one game where the score was greater than three goals. All goal keepers and defences had an amazing day.
We had the first game on the day, coming up against the home team Colchester. As their games were being played as friendlies, they took the decision to bring in some seasoned players to help their young squad. Meaning we got the win at the end of the day, but it made for a great game for those watching.
The first half was a tight affair.
Colchester got the first goal, but Matt hit back two minutes later.
We lost a second goal before half time.
The second half was a ding-dong battle, with both teams flexing their muscle. We scored first, a solo effort from Louie. They hit next, before Max tied things up 3 – 3 with five minutes left on the clock.
Both teams went for the win full on. Kenzie put in a shift up top, Charlotte made some super blocks and tackles, and Chloe was a wall in goal.
Unfortunately, a bit of magic from one of the top under-nineteen players in the country - got them a goal with two minutes to go.
Though it was a friendly, neither team wanted to lose. With under a minute to go Louie and Matt combined for a beautiful volley.
Final score 4 – 4. Both teams a credit to the sport.
Game two brought Kings Lynn, one of the teams we needed to beat to have any hope of reaching the summit at the end of the day.
We took an early lead with a goal from Louie before they hit back mid-way through the half. Mark got two goals either side of half time. And a third with ten minutes to go, which seemed to put a seal on things.
We were in total control – repelling everything they threw at us. With Chloe again the star of the show. But one should never get too comfortable in any game, as with four minutes to go they hit two quick goals - which woke us from our slumber.
A final goal from Mr. Dynamo Louie, put pay to any further resistance.
Final score 5 – 3.
Our last game of the day was against Skaters.
Who’d beaten us 2 – 0 on our first meeting.
The game was tight for the first eight minutes, with both teams cancelling each other out. Then Matt broke through their defence to slot home. Half a minute later Louie hit his third of the day.
They pressed and managed to get one back before half time. 2 – 1 to us at the break.
Matt scored early in the second half – his fourth of the day. Midway through the half we lost our way and gave away two cheap goals.
But with four minutes to go Max put us ahead again with a far post finish.
Sadly, we couldn’t hold on to the win, as with ninety seconds remaining - we lost the final goal of the game. Making it feel like a loss.
The league table below shows us back at the summit. Though we have the points in the bag, we’ve played more games than a number of the other teams.
Thanks to Julie Bryan my assistant, Louie for also refereeing. And all at Colchester, who made it such an exciting day.

Team Coach.
LRHC v Plymouth Match Report
North Herts Leisure Centre 16th December 2023
The Team - Louie (GK), Lily-Rose, Charlie, Ben, Mackenzie, Sasha, Peter, Marco, Chloe (GK).
Coach: Andrew Allen.
Ass. Coach: Fay McLean-Chandler.
Plymouth came to Letchworth with just 4 rink players and one keeper, but they came to fight and battle in every second of the game.
I deputised for Nigel, who was unavailable to coach and relished every moment coaching a young yet talented team. We started with Lily-Rose, Charlie, Sasha and Mackenzie, with Louie between the sticks.
Plymouth played well and parked the bus in front of ex-Letchworth keeper, Dan Milne, who we knew would be hard to beat. Their tactic worked and proved hard to get through. We had a time out and rotated players from a very strong bench, and due to our dominance and lion’s share of possession, just after ten minutes.
This came from an open play set move we’d worked on with Ben suppling the perfect pass for Mackenzie to finish far post.
But not set back by this Plymouth kept us out time after time with shots from Charlie and Sasha dinging off the metalwork or being picked out by Dan, who brought his ‘A’ game… Mackenzie scored a second goal which pretty much was of his own doing after fighting to get the ball back, playing a slick one two with Marco, who put the ball back to him in the perfect position for him to tap it home. 2-0. Breathing space.
Just under a minute later we streamed into the Plymouth box and the referees called correctly for a penalty after Ben was taken out in the area. Ben stepped up to take it and after a brief pep talk from Louie with a bit of direction of how to beat Dan, Ben slapped it top bin. The half ended 3-0.
At halftime we spoke about making an immediate impact from the dead ball situation, as the second half would start with our centre. The plan worked and within a minute of the start, Sasha got us exactly what we wanted, with brother Peter supplying the pass for low level bottom corner slapshot. We stuck to our game plan and with rotation of the bench again, Marco was reintroduced to vary the play, mix it up and to get inside Plymouth’s defence, to get them on the back foot again. It worked.
We had Plymouth facing their own goal and Marco culminated a good spell of clean passing and movement with a goal for himself from a Lily-Rose pass. A perfect team goal. As the game progressed Plymouth were visibly and understandably tiring, but still making it hard for us.
The game went end to end for 3-4 minutes which is always great for the crowd to watch, but not so for the coach’s heart rate!
This period for play was fast and furious and during a missed opportunity by us and a counterattack by Plymouth, a shot on target was deflected and with a fast reaction, saved by Louie, but only to rebound off a Letchworth player, bounced up and was scored via the oldest player on the pitch, Plymouth’s Gavin Swabey.
It was very disappointing not to get a clean sheet, but for all their dogged determination, Plymouth probably deserved the goal.
What was gratifying to see was our response. From the centre to our next goal took six passes, good movement and only 13 seconds, finished by Mackenzie for his third of the game. From the resulting centre, Plymouth held out for another three minutes before Charlie put Mackenzie through again for his fourth of the day.
We quickly regained possession from them, and with 52 seconds left, Mackenzie and Charlie reversed passer and goal scorer for Charlie to get a well-deserved goal after all his hard work and near misses.
Special thanks Fay for doing the running around for me and organising the team, but also to debutant Chloe for being Louie’s back-up lining up for the first time for the Prem team. Although not getting on rink in this game, I’m sure there will be plenty more opportunities.
All in all, the LRHC team played a very solid game and were deserved victors, although there is still plenty to learn.
