Liverpool School of Medicine
A page with news and updates from the Liverpool School of Medicine. One of the largest Schools in the UK, developing excellent doctors for over 180 years.
๐ Consultant Neurosurgeon Mr Nick Carleton-Bland and his team at are celebrating an Excellence in Education and Training Award at the NHS Parliamentary Awards this October.
๐ The teamโs Neuro VR simulator has played a key role in clinical placements over the last three years, with hundreds of Liverpool student doctors benefiting from its addition to their learning. The simulator is the UKโs only such piece of equipment and one of only 30 worldwide.
๐ฃ๏ธ โI am really humbled to have been selected to be the first ever winner of the NHS Parliamentary Award for Excellence in education and training. Many factors and many people helped and contributed to the work required to win this award include the great efforts from the Walton Charity and the kind support from the Jan Fairclough Ball"
๐ง The Walton Centre is the only hospital in the UK to have the neuro VR simulator. It is currently the most advanced neurosurgery simulator available, and it has been used as part of surgical skills sessions with more than 300 student doctors from the University of Liverpool, as well as by regional neurosurgeons in training and in national post-graduate courses.
๐ฒ The high-fidelity simulator enables the student to interact with a realistic surgical situation โ allowing them to appreciate the dexterity required to perform neurosurgery, which would be impossible to replicate in any other way. The simulation also gives better understanding of what the students see when they come to observe operations.
Congratulations to Nick and the team at the Walton Centre!

๐พ Looking forward to celebrating with you all in person at Prize Evening in November!
๐ซ Year Three Student Doctor Imran Farhad was accepted to present at the European Association of Neurological Societies, an international conference that took place in Marseille.
๐ฃ๏ธ โThe European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) hold annual conferences for neurologists, neurosurgeons and anyone interested in the field to attend and present their research to a panel of experts within the field. Itโs often attended by clinicians from all over the world, who have revolutionised surgical techniques or are leading important drug trials for all sorts of vascular neurological conditions".
โ๐ผ My presentation was titled โThe Outcomes following Stereotactic Radiosurgery for High-Grade Brain AVMsโ. Usually, theyโre treated successfully by removal via microsurgery, however for larger AVMs this is much more difficult and can lead to significant morbidity and mortality rates. Stereotactic Radiosurgery is a non-invasive, outpatient method which has been proposed by many as a better treatment method. My presentation essentially explores if this is true.
๐ The anxiety leading up to it can build up quick as you think about everything that can possibly go wrong, from forgetting your lines to getting grilled by a professor. However, I found that it was the exact opposite. You realise no one is there to negatively judge your work, but instead learn from your research and give helpful feedback. They were all very supportive and helpful.
๐๐ผ Following the conference, Imran has also received the happy news that his research paper has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Neurosurgery.
Congratulations Imran!

๐ Earlier this month, Student Doctor Erin Powell attended a special, invite-only event at Buckingham Palace. Hosted by The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward, this occasion celebrated young people who have shown extraordinary perseverance, creativity and resilience to complete their Gold Duke of Edinburgh award.
๐พ The Buckingham Palace Garden was transformed into a festival-style celebration for young people and their loved ones, with giant deckchairs, bunting, and garden games and activities. Attendees had the chance to hear from famous DofE Award holders and broadcasting legends, and pick up career advice from actors, presenters, authors, and campaigners, at stages throughout the garden.
๐
A Gold DofE Award is a major achievement โ young people spend at least 12 months honing new skills and talents, planning and completing an expedition and residential, and volunteering for a cause they are passionate about. Erin initially signed up to do her bronze DofE Award five years ago when she was looking for something fun to do with her friends outside of studying. After completing this, Erin got the bug and continued on to achieve her Silver and then Gold Awards.
๐ฃ๏ธ The challenges during the three awards taught me a lot about myself and how I react to different situations. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and gave me a lot of experiences I would otherwise have not had. So much of the programme is directly transferrable into real life and will help me as I go through university and into my career.
Well done Erin!
โ๏ธ On a glorious sunny Saturday, a small group of medical students completed the Wirral 100km cycle challenge โ and it was no small feat!
๐ฒ Each year, the cycle challenge takes place and takes participants from the Wirral and across the River Mersey for to the finish line in Liverpool. This year, Charities worked hard to organise the event, all in aid of charities KIND and Claire House.
๐ It was full steam ahead for our cyclists who were on the road for a total of around nine hours โ with a few snack stops along the way. Charity reps Aidan Hegarty and Conor Fogarty reflect on how they conquered the day:
๐ฃ๏ธ "Starting off from Birkenhead, we headed for Ellesmere Port while stopping at Claire House along the way for a nice catchup with one of our sponsored charities over the last year, before settling in Chester for lunch out in the blazing heat".
"We then took the scenic route along the boardwalks of the Burton Marsh, taking us north-west to the town of West Kirby. Finally, the challenge was finished after a cruise along the north coast past Leasowe and New Brighton. After an eventful day filled with chain malfunctions, cramps and navigation errors, the group of seven, sunburnt students made it home in one piece!"
๐ค Thank you for all the support so far - our JustGiving page is still up so please donate if you can!

๐ It was a big night for the Medical School at this year's awards as 3 different societies/students scooped up awards for their work throughout the year.
The Guild Awards recognise individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the University or wider community through their dedication, passion and hard work.
โ๏ธ were awarded the Biggest Impact on the City of Liverpool Awardย for going above and beyond to positively impact the city of Liverpool in the past 12 months. They have worked tirelessly to support their charities raising money for both Liverpool Womenโs Hospital Charity and Liverpool Domestic Abuse Service,.
๐ฃ๏ธ President Katie says, โWinning this award is an incredible achievement for the society and it was very special to win the biggest impact on the city of Liverpool especially after fundraising for charities we really believe are doing amazing things for the city".
๐ฅ Next up were who won the Guild Values Award which recognises an individual or group who have embodied the Guild Values, creating something extraordinary in the face of adversity.
๐ฃ๏ธ President Rhema says "The Guild values encourage societies to be: innovative, representative and responsible. We created brand new events such as our Brews and Beauty fundraiser for Mary Seacole House, kept up with our amazing teaching sessions and highlighted cultural diversity through the Culture Ball and our social media pages".
๐๐ผ Lastly, Siona Mitra won Course Rep of the Year forthe extra mile to improve the student experience and make sure studentsโ voices are heard by the University.
๐ฃ๏ธ "Balancing the demanding course and clinical rotations with my responsibilities as a student rep was often challenging, but receiving this award made it all worthwhile. It was a validation of my efforts to create a positive impact and support my peers through the highs and lows of medical school"
๐๐ผ Huge congratulations to you all, well done on your achievements & for representing the School Community so well.
