A new start!

24/07/2022

So after 4 years, it’s done! I am now officially a Physiotherapist! There will be changes to the business in the coming weeks but right now I’m just going to enjoy this moment.

I’ve been told I have a ‘military walk’, see what you think 😂

I’ve lost count of the number of times I've read this paragraph!

Every person you treat is a challenge. Some people have had such bad experiences receiving treatment that you find yourself having to re-establish the fundamentals of what a Sports Massage treatment is supposed to be.

Some people you treat require you to manage expectations. As much as you would love each client you meet to be a, "one and done", that isn't always the case.

Then you have the person who knows what the injury is, who knows what treatment they need, and who knows how the injury should be treated. This can be a challenge and one that I still struggle with to this day.

Then you get, for me at least, the most challenging client. The client who has done this before, who is educated to level above your own, and with a wealth of experience that you aspire to wield someday. That client was Penny.

Penny came to see me following a coaching session in and was eager to receive a Sports Massage. After the initial consultation, we began the treatment. We began chatting during the treatment and piece by piece Penny revealed her background as a Therapist studying in the UK and China, her time treating both professional and semi-professional athletes, and her time as a teacher.

This is very intimidating to me but I give credit to myself that Penny received the same treatment that I provide to any of my regular or prospective clients.

Penny was highly complimentary after the treatment and after some words of encouragement, went on her way.

I received a copy of Penny's book from this past week, a copy I was told was for me personally, and I came across the page attached to this post.

For someone who struggles with confidence; this paragraph, written by someone with a wealth of knowledge and experience, has given me the self-belief that what I do is to a good standard.

Thank you, Penny, for the kind words and inspiration to stay fresh and to keep improving.

And thank you to all my clients, current and prospective, who continue to put their recovery in my hands.

Latest course complete!

Although there’re many course providers and instrument assisted soft tissue tools out there, I definitely made the right choice studying with !

Now when you book in with myself, you’ll get the option of adding this treatment modality to your sessions.

Please get in touch we with me for more information regarding both booking, and the benefits of this treatment!

🔶If you know me, you'll know that I am passionate about a holistic approach to sports performance.

🔶My primary focus is on the soft tissue management of my clients but I am also interested in other aspects of their performance.

🔶Although they're a snapshot, blood tests can provide an insight into how the choices you're making, regarding training, nutrition and recovery, are impacting your body.

🔶I've recently started using Medichecks to establish certain biomarkers of inflammation, nutritional choices I make, and just general feedback on my health. I was so happy with the service that I have now become an affiliate member!

🔶If you're looking to establish how your training is affecting your recovery, or if those supplements you take are helping you reach your recovery goals, then I highly recommend Medichecks!

🙌The goals of a Massage Therapist should be to reduce pain, increase pain free movement when possible and provide evidence based practise.⠀
⠀
👨‍🎓In this systematic review (a systematic review summarises the results of available carefully designed healthcare studies 'controlled trials' and provides a high level of evidence on the effectiveness of healthcare interventions) from the Journal of Bodywork & Movement Therapies, Charles et al (2019) collected studies relating to the reduction of myofascial pain and myofascial trigger point pain.⠀
⠀
📑Eight studies on manual therapy, twenty-three studies on dry needling, and two studies on dry cupping met the inclusion criteria. ⠀
⠀
❓What did they find?⠀
⠀
📌Despite all modalities having their strengths and weaknesses, manual therapy was deemed to have the most adequate research when managing myofascial pain and myofascial trigger points when discussing the included studies.⠀

👨🏻‍🎓Just a snapshot from a recent study from Strömbäck, Aasa, Gilenstam and Berglund (2018).⠀
⠀
💪A total of 104 powerlifters (53 women and 51 men) answered an online questionnaire which included questions about background characteristics, training habits, and lifestyle factors. This questions related to injuries sustained and their consequences ⠀
⠀
🏋️The study found that training frequency, greater personal⠀
best in the deadlift, injury onset during bench press and deadlift training, use of straps, alcohol consumption, and dietary issues were associated with current injuries. ⠀
⠀
👨‍🏫The researchers have proposed that two areas are in need of further exploration in order to develop injury prevention strategies, these are (1) acute and chronic training loads and (2) relevance of the lifting technique. ⠀

🏋️One of the most common injuries I've come across relate to the shoulder.

In this article from volume 5 of the 2007 October issue of Strength and Conditioning Journal, the authors explore the belief that wide grip bench press correlates with an increased risk of shoulder.

👨🏻‍🎓The authors measurement using the biacromial measurement (bm), which measures the distance from the outside edge of both acromial processes. This distance is then taken and multiplied by 1.5 to give you an ideal bench width.

The article suggests that a grip of >1.5 bm could lead to increased injury of Anterior Glenohumeral Instability, Atraumatic Osteolysis of the Distal Clavicle or Pectoralis Major Rupture.

The article suggests that by reducing your grip to

I hope you will all understand this decision. This increase will ensure that I can reinvest in the business and thus provide a higher standard of service. Some of the things I have invested in since my first price increase included:-

- A massage course refresher.
- x2 courses provided by Physio.co.uk (a third course I paid for I was unable due to train delays!).
- Subscription to Clinical Edge, Prohealth SYS and Prehab Guys.

This next price increase will enable me to continue with CPD throughout 2020 and beyond.

Thank you for your continued support!
