On the 2nd September 1939 a cinema opened its doors for the first time called The Plaza. The first film shown was South Riding starring Sir Ralph Richardson & Ann Todd
On that same day due to the outbreak of WW2 the cinema closed for a short period of time.

Now 85 years later it is still as big and beautiful as it was when it first opened, the phrase used is The Jewel in Seftons Crown.

It has had 6 names in that time The Plaza, Odeon, Cannon, Classic, Apollo but by far the best one is The Plaza Community Cinema run by dedicated staff and volunteers, still going strong 27 years later

So raise a glass to another 85 years and to a stunning Art Deco building.

Independent Cinemas play an essential part in every community offering families opportunities to watch film at affordable prices, 3 independent cinemas have recently closed their doors for the last time, so supporting your local cinema is more important now than ever before. I remember the phrase the Plaza said

USE IT OR LOSE IT

01/09/2024

Plaza Information : As the 6 weeks holiday draws to a close ( hooray some of you say) the Plaza would like to thank everyone who has supported us during the holiday time, visiting a cinema that provides tickets at affordable prices with a great service, run by a FANTASTIC group of volunteers & staff who deserve a huge round of applause.

The Plaza will now revert back to teatime and evening opening weekday and all day Saturday & Sunday

We will also as planned be closing Screen 2 for a few weeks to reopen looking like this

THANKS FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT

In the Community, for the Community

The Plaza Cinema opened on 2 September 1939 which was not a propitious event as it was immediately closed again that same day due to regulations introduced by the outbreak of war! Following the reopening two weeks later the Cinema offered full film programmes and, for many years, live variety entertainment from such well known artists as Tommy Handley, Arthur Askey, Charlie Chester, Ted Ray and Hilda Baker.

Originally the cinema had a capacity of 1,450 seats – 1,000 in the stalls and 450 in the balcony. This layout continued until 1976 when it was converted to a three screen cinema so that today the main auditorium has 200 stalls seats and 370 balcony seats with each of the other two auditoria having 97 seats.

The original area of the stage has been reduced to accommodate additional seating following the demise of live performances in the building and the introduction of the twin small auditoria.

In October 1995 a planning notice was posted on the lamp-post outside the cinema. This was the first time that local residents became aware of Apollo’s proposal to offer the site for redevelopment. A local 12 year old schoolboy immediately started a campaign to save the cinema.
