Introducing a brand new free exhibition at Cafe 1854 in St George's Hall: Amazing Grace!

Brought to you by Cowper & Newton Museum, discover the fascinating story behind one of the world’s most recorded hymns, "Amazing Grace," written by Reverend John Newton. This hymn, composed for a New Year’s Day service in 1773, has become an international anthem, recorded by legends like Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, and Mariah Carey, and has even inspired former US President Barack Obama.

Explore Newton's profound journey from a Liverpool First Mate and slave ship Captain to his transformation into a dedicated Tide Surveyor and ordained minister. Liverpool played a pivotal role in his life, where he wrote his life story and made his first abolitionist statement.

Ahead of Newton’s 300th birthday in 2025, this exhibit from the Cowper & Newton Museum in Olney is touring venues, prompting reflection on the relevance of this 250-year-old hymn today.

📅 Application deadline for traders to join our brand new market is fast approaching!

Apply by Friday, 31 May and join us in creating a vibrant market scene at St George’s Hall, which will be held seasonally four times a year. The market is free to the public and will run from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
