Meet Julian Muñoz 🔭⭐️
Muñoz is a theoretical cosmologist, working as an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Austin Department of Astronomy!
His research is on the elusive dark matter and its connection to the first galaxies, working at the intersection of astrophysics and particle physics ✨
Muñoz holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Complutense University of Madrid, and gained a Ph.D. in Physics from Johns Hopkins University 🎓
Perhaps most notably, Muñoz is the developer of a new standard ruler used to measure the early universe and reveal how fast the universe was expanding at that time 🪐
Muñoz has a clear fascination with the unknown, describing it as “an integral component of human nature — like art and poetry.” Although he didn’t have a scientific role model –his parents didn’t finish high school– he focused his attention on video games and coding until a high school physics teacher encouraged his scientific streak, leading to this amazing journey in STEM!

Did you spot the Northern Lights over the UK earlier this month? 🤔🌌
The aurora borealis, also known as the ‘Northern Lights’ appear as bright, swirling curtains of lights in the night sky and range in colour from green to pink and scarlet.
They are caused by charged particles from the sun hitting gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. Different gases produce different colours when energised. The two most common gases in the Earth’s atmosphere are nitrogen, which emits purple, blue, and pink, and oxygen atoms, which glow green - the colour most often seen in the Northern Lights🌈
The Northern Lights are seen most often in regions close to the North Pole such as Scandinavia, Greenland, Alaska, Canada, and Russia. However, they have been seen all across the UK in Spring 2024 due to the biggest geomagnetic storm since 2003! 😮
What is World Bee Day? 🐝
Bees and other pollinators, such as butterflies, bats and hummingbirds, are increasingly under threat from human activities.
Pollination is, however, a fundamental process for the survival of our ecosystems. Nearly 90% of the world’s wild flowering plant species depend, entirely, or at least in part, on animal pollination, along with more than 75% of the world’s food crops and 35% of global agricultural land. Not only do pollinators contribute directly to food security, but they are key to conserving biodiversity.
To raise awareness of the importance of pollinators, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development, the UN designated 20 May as World Bee Day.
Why Today? 🗓️
The date May 20th, was chosen as it coincides with the birthday of Anton Janša, who in the 18th century pioneered modern beekeeping techniques in his native Slovenia.
How can we do more? 🤔
On the individual level, we can all help protect the bees by:
🌼Planting a diverse set of native plants, which flower at different times of the year
🌼Buying raw honey from local farmers
🌼Buying products from sustainable agricultural practices
🌼Avoiding pesticides, fungicides or herbicides in our gardens
🌼Protecting wild bee colonies when possible
🌼Sponsoring a hive
🌼Making a bee water fountain by leaving a water bowl outside
🌼Helping sustaining forest ecosystems
🌼Raising awareness around us by sharing this information within our communities and networks
Earth day began as a protest on April 22nd 1970 🌱
It has since become an annual global event highlighting the importance of protecting the environment 🌍
The theme for this year’s Earth Day is ‘People vs. Plastics’, bringing to attention the harms of plastic pollution for human and planetary health 🐬
Science, as well as everyday people, play an important role in the protection of our world. Climate and environmental scientists work tirelessly to help safeguard the Earth and ensure human health and safety. They fight climate change as a whole, by helping to preserve important natural resources, habitats that help to support biodiversity, and avoiding excess emissions that contribute to pollution 🔬
These scientists conduct environmental assessment and research, oversee and analyse environmental data and help to create strategies for greater sustainable measures by advising stakeholders and policymakers 📋

On top of all this, he’s also a stand-up comedian, stating ‘I like to think that making something funny is one of the best ways of making it memorable. It’s because of this that I really love mixing science & tech stories with comedy.’ 🎭

Happy International Women's Day from the team at STEMaccess!
Happy World Engineering Day! ⚙️
At STEMaccess, we think it’s necessary to showcase the wide variety of STEM careers and the modern-day, diverse group of people pioneering the field.
In the run up to International Women’s Day this Friday, we thought what better than to spotlight one of the leading experts of nanotechnology in Bangladesh.
“Being a female scientist in a traditionally male-dominated field is, to be fair, an awkward experience. Whenever I won some accolades or got recognition for my contribution, people would tell my parents that they have gotten a son in me.
As if I could only become equivalent to men only when I achieved something great. For them, they just needed to be born."
Meet Dr. Samia Subrina ⭐️
Dr Subrina is currently working as a professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) at the Bangladesh University of Engineering Technology. In 2020, she received the OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Award for Early-Career Women Scientists in the developing world for her research on the uses and property of nano-particles.
Dr. Subrina received her PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of California Riverside in 2011. She has spoken about the lack of infrastructure and funding available in Bangladesh, the reason why she decided to study abroad, but ultimately came back home to give back to her community.
Dr. Subrina’s research focuses on the modeling of thermal and electronic transport in nanoscale materials and the applications of these materials in nanoscale devices.

"We still have the challenge of not enough women taking up engineering. One way to tackle this problem is to destigmatise engineering as something that only men do.
Historically the world has been engineered by men for men, but our future needn’t be."
